Micro-Project Report
1. Rationale: Channel is passage through which water flows under
atmospheric pressure or gravity. To understand the fluid flow through
channels geometric properties of channels help us. There are so many
types of channels which are built as per requirement and condition.
Some of the channels are naturally made e.g. river.
2. Aim/Benefits of the Micro-Project: Study and collect the
information about channels and their geometric properties.
3. Course Outcomes Achieved:
CO e. Find the fluid flow parameters in open channels.
4. Literature Review:
The information about the topic was collected by different sources
such as different reference book, You Tube videos and also by
different sites as well as using web links. Also we meet the teacher
related with this topic and the corresponding subject in our college we
got good information from our teacher. Also in practical our subject
teacher Mrs.
H. B. Akotkar Mam gives us information.
5. Actual Methodology Followed:
1. I had discussed about micro project with respective teacher.
2. I had took guideline from subject teacher.
3. I collected required resources and information related to project.
4. I prepared a report on the given topic.
5. Demonstration of project and final submission.

7. Outputs of micro project :
Introduction :
An open channel is a passage through which the water flows under
atmospheric pressure or gravity. In open channel flow is due to the
difference in potential head caused by the downward slope of the bed
of channel. In open channel uniform slope is provided to its bed to
maintain the flow of water.
Types of Channels :
Channels are classified as artificial channels and natural channels.
Artificial channel : The channel which are having particular
shapes and sizes i.e. built artificially for carrying water and which
are helpful to measure the velocity of flow, discharge through
channels.
Natural channels : The channels which are having irregular
shapes, which are developed in natural way e.g. Rivers. The
surface roughness will often change with time distance and even
elevation.
Prismatic Channel : A channel in which the cross sectional shape,
size and the bottom slope are constant is termed as prismatic
channel.
Non-Prismatic Channel : All natural channels generally have
varying cross section and consequently are non prismatic.
Rigid Boundary Channel : A channel with an immovable beds
and sides is known as rigid boundary channel.
Mobile Boundary Channel : If a channel boundary is composed
of loose sedimentary particles moving under the action of flowing
water, the channel is called a mobile boundary channel.
Small Slope Channel : An open channel having a bottom slope
less than 1 in 10 is called as channel of small slope.
Large Slope Channel : An open channel having a bottom slope
greater than 1 in 10 is called as channel of small slope.
Different shapes of Artificial Channels :
a. Rectangular Channel : A rectangular cross-section is not
provided in channels except in rocky soils, where the faces of rocks
can be stand vertically. Through, a rectangular section is not of
much practical importance.
b. Trapezoidal Channel : A trapezoidal section is always provided
in the earth channels. The side slopes, in a channel of trapezoidal
cross section are provided so that the soil can stand safely.
c. Circular Channel : Though it is closed the pressure on the water
surface is atmospheric.
d. Triangular Channel :
Geometrical Properties of Channels :
For analysis of various geometric properties of the channel cross
section required. For artificial channels these can usually defined
using simple algebraic equations. The commonly needed geometrical
properties are as follows :
Wetted area : Cross sectional area of flow of section of the
channel is known as wetted area.
Wetted perimeter : The length of the channel boundary in contact
with the flowing water at any section is known as wetted perimeter.
It is denoted by P.
Hydraulic radius or Hydraulic mean depth : It is the ratio of the
wetted area to the wetted perimeter.
Hydraulic depth : The depth of flow in a channel above bed
surface is called as hydraulic depth
Hydraulic Properties for Rectangular and Trapezoidal Channel
Section :
1) Rectangular Section :
Let, b = Width of the section
d = Depth of section
A = Area of section = b x d = wetted area
P = Wetted perimeter = b + 2d
Now Hydraulic mean depth
R = A / P = b x d / b + 2d
2) Trapezoidal Section :
Let, b = Bottom Width
d = Depth of flow
1 : n = Side sides
A = Area of section = ½ (b + b + 2nd) d
= ½ (2b + 2nd) d
= ½ x 2 (b + nd) d
= bd + nd^2
Wetted perimeter (P) = b + 2d √1+n^2
Now Hydraulic mean depth (R) = A / P
R = bd + nd^2 / b + 2d √1+n^2
7. Skill developed / learning outcomes of the project:
1) Preparation of report.
2) It is important to develop online interaction by searching and
collecting useful information by using internet.
3) Handling the data that’s very needful to project.
4) It is very useful to increase thinking capacity that help to how to
improve the presentation.
8. Application of micro project :
1) This micro project gives the information about channels and
their their types which are built by artificially or naturally.
2) In this project, for analysis of channels their geometric
properties are given which help us to understand about the
condition of channels.
3) To find out the amount of flow and it’s type through channels
geometric properties of channels helps.
