Restricted: Corrosive area,
outlet line that have back
pressure, liquid, long outlet
pipe.

Application: Vessel with

Pilot Safety Relief Valve
Safety valves that consist of two component, main
valve as piston and pilot as a driver. Pilot is spring
load valve/diaphragm that control increase pressure
that cause main valve fully open.
Application:
Large relief area at high open pressure
High delta pressure (Operation vs opening pressure).
High back pressure
Low blow down

Thermal Relief Valve
Automatic safety valves which will be opened if
there is static pressure in upstream due to
temperature increase.

there is pressure increase or vacuum condition.

Keep closed due to availability of process pressure.

Weakness
― Back pressure.
― Susceptible to chatter if
high back pressure

Advantage

+ Has a better resistance from
back pressure
+ Protect spring from corrosion
Weakness
― Bellows susceptible to
become fatigue/damage
― It may release
flammable/toxic gas to

― Required separated venting
system.

1. Back Pressure
Pressure that occur in downstream (outlet) valve which
attempt to reclose the valve.
Built-up Back Pressure
Pressure on discharge header which caused by there is
liquid flow after safety relief valve open

2. Blowdown Pressure
Pressure difference between popping pressure and pressure
when the valve close and the fluid is already totally come out
(empty).
3. Set Pressure
A pressure when safety valve open and the fluid come out and
popping.
4. Cold Differential Test Pressure (CDTP)
A testing pressure of safety valve after reduced by back
pressure and add by correction temperature.
CDTP = Set Press – Back Press + Correction Temperature

5. Opening Pressure
A pressure imposed on the valve to open and release a
pressurized fluid
6. Popping Pressure
A given pressure safety valve until popping noises due to
open disk quickly and remove high pressure fluid in the
blowdown chamber/vessel having a lower pressure.
7. Leak Test
A lower pressure 10% of set pressure charged at the safety
valve after popping test.

8. Reseating Pressure
The pressure imposed on the safety valve to stop releasing
pressure and closed again.
9. Correction Temperature (CT)
A value for correcting the effect of temperature on the set
pressure safety valve.
A correction value is generally determined by the
manufacturer of the safety valve which ranged from 1 – 4 %
of the set pressure at the operating temperature of 200 –
600 oC
