This discipline captures ideas of the different studies on career planning and development which signifies intention in developing
learners’ career pathways appropriate for self-sufficiency and life oriented skills. Minor, Frank J. (2014) Introduction to the Careering
Planning Process, identified importance of career goals which enable learners to make decisions about personal developmental activities
while in school such as internships, volunteer work and summer jobs. Research has shown that there are many significant advantages and
benefits of having career plans. He also stated that it involves thinking about which educational and occupational paths will provide learners
satisfaction and fulfilment in all aspects of life, present and future.
Furthermore, American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Model stated that career of the learners require the skills to investigate
the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions. They will employ strategies to achieve future
career goals with success and satisfaction, and they will understand the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the
world of work. ASCA added that career development, guide schools to provide the foundation for the acquisition of skills, attitudes and
knowledge that enable learners to make a successful transition from school to the world of work, and from job to job across the life span.
According to Smallman, Julie (1999) Career Development and Students with Disabilities, one challenge for individuals with disabilities
is to make a successful transition from school to career. Work experiences can provide motivation for study and work, career clarification,
confidence in career choice, increase maturity and self-esteem. A chance to prove their worth to their potential employers, learners with
disabilities are less likely to access work-based learning and career development program than thus non-disabled peers. She added to
increase the participations of learners with disabilities in work experiences that will help them meet their ultimate goals of full-time
employment in a challenging and rewarding career. The goal for each DO-IT participants is not simply job placement but the pursuit of a
meaningful career that matches the learners’ goals, interest and abilities.
Operationally for better understanding CAREER is an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life with
opportunities for progress. It requires special trainings of an individual’s lifelong journey.
SCOPE:
CAREER SKILLS allows Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN’s) in making the transition from home to school,
school to community, school to career, and school to additional education and training. Assessment will be given before and after or as
necessary as possible to address the needs of the learners. These skills could be taught together with other skills for better preparation of
the learners in the field of work or to advance to secondary level.
