Animal Tissue Types & Functions

This document discusses the four basic types of tissues in the animal body: epithelial, connective, muscular, and nervous tissue. Each tissue type is defined, its functions are outlined, and examples of each are given. Epithelial tissue forms protective layers, connective tissue connects and supports other tissues, muscular tissue enables movement through contraction, and nervous tissue regulates bodily functions through signal transmission. Major classes and examples are provided for each tissue.

ANIMAL TISSUE AND IT'S TYPES
The animal cells are grouped together to form animal tissues. These tissues vary in
their structure, function, and origin. The animal body comprises of four basic types of
tissues. They are,

● EPITHELIAL TISSUE
● CONNECTIVE TISSUE
● MUSCULAR TISSUE
● NERVOUS TISSUE
Epithelial tissue
They form the covering of the external Epithelial tissue are divided into four
surfaces, internal cavities and organs of major classes they are ,
the animal body.Epithelial tissue cells
are tightly packed and form a ● Squamous simple epithelium
continuous sheet. The skin, the lining of ● Stratified simple epithelium
the mouth, the lining of blood vessels, ● Cuboidal epithelium
lung alveoli and kidney tubules are all ● Columnar epithelium
made of epithelial tissue.
Functions
● They form the other lay of the skin. They protect underlying cells from drying,
injury, chemical effects etc.
● Form lining of mouth and alimentary canal and protects these organs .
● Helps in absorption of water and nutrients.
● It forms barrier to keep different body system separate.
● Forms lining of blood vessels, alveoli, kidneykidney tubules.
● They secrete a variety of substances such as sweat, saliva, enzymes etc.

CONNECTIIVE TISSUE
Types of connective tissues,
Connective tissue is the tissue
● Blood
that connects, separates and
● Bone
supports all other types of
● Ligament
tissues in the body and are
● Tendons
loosely spaced and embedded in ● Cartilage
an intercellular matrix. ● Areolar connective tissue
● Adipose tissue
FUNCTIONS

● Enclosing and separating organs

● Connecting tissues to one another

● Supporting and moving
● Transport and protection

MUSCULAR TISSUE

Muscular tissue is composed of muscle Muscular tissues are of three types.

cells.Muscle cells are specialized cells They are ,
which have the capability to contract and
expand and have tensile strength. ● Striated muscle
Due to contraction and expansion, ● Smooth muscle
muscles facilitate various kinds of
● Cardiac muscle
movements in the body
FUNCTIONS
● Movement is the main function of muscular tissue. They have the ability to
contract and this is what brings about the movement of body parts. They also
help to maintain body posture and position.

NERVOUS TISSUE

Nervous or the nerve tissue is the main

tissue of our nervous system. It monitors
and regulates the functions of the body. Nervous tissues are found in,
Nervous tissue consists of cells called
nerve cells or neurons and, which helps to ● Brain
transmit nerve impulses and also provides ● Spinal cord
nutrients to neuron.
● Nerves
FUNCTIONS
● Neurons generate and carry out nerve impulses. They produce electrical signals
that are transmitted across distances, they do so by secreting chemical
neurotransmitters.
● Responds to stimuli
● Carries out communication and integration
● Provides electrical insulations to nerve cells and removes debris
● Carries messages from other neurons to the cell body
