Important GI Tags

Geographical indications (GI) tags identify products that correspond to a specific geographical location. Darjeeling tea was the first GI tagged product in India in 2004-2005. There are now over 617 GI tags in India, identifying various agricultural, handicraft, and industrial products from different states such as Darjeeling green and white tea from West Bengal, Kolhapuri chappals from Maharashtra, and Coorg Arabica coffee from Karnataka. The GI tag ensures only authorized users from the geographic region can use the popular product name.

GI Tags

• A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which


corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g., a town, region, or
country).
• Geographical Indications of Goods act 1999, came into force from 2003.
• The GI tag ensures that none other than those registered as authorized users (or
at least those residing inside the geographic territory) are allowed to use the
popular product name.
• Darjeeling tea became the first GI tagged product in India, in 2004–2005.
• Till now 617 GI Tags given in India.
