Ethics Worksheet

Melissa Thomas Scott, a single mother and breast cancer survivor, faced an ethical dilemma when her manager assigned her to care for COVID-19 patients despite knowing her health history and responsibilities to her four children. The competing values at play were her responsibilities to her family versus her integrity and courage as a nurse. Key stakeholders included Melissa, her children, and her manager. Alternatives considered were for Melissa to not quit and find childcare support or to communicate directly with management about reassignment to a lower-risk area given her circumstances.

Nurse Who Quit Her Job Due to COVID-19 Fears Says She Regrets Decision

A fed-up nurse has gone viral after she took to Facebook to quit her job after being placed on a
floor with patients being tested for COVID-19.

“I quit! I care about the patients and all but my kids and my life, they matter, they come first,”
Melissa Thomas Scott declared in her video. Thomas Scott, a breast cancer survivor and mom
of four, made the difficult decision after being assigned to a floor where patients are being
tested for coronavirus inside a Georgia hospital.
Basic Facts of the Case
"My manager sent me to a floor that's being tested for Corona. She knows my health history.
She knows all of this,” she said in her video. “I told her my kids don't have anybody to go to
while they're here. I can't send my kids away like everybody else. I'm done, I'm leaving."

She walked out of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, which has been the hardest hit
in her state as more than 350 patients and counting are battling
COVID-19 inside.

Considering the situation of Melissa: she is a cancer survivor and a single

mother with 4 children, what should she have done? Should she quit because of
the risks involved on being exposed to CoVid19 patients? Should she have quit
the way she did -- should she have quit publicly via Facebook?

Ethical Dilemma
An Ethical dilemma is an experience where a person is confronted with competing values. The choice or solution in an Ethical
dilemma is the strongest or the most important value that the person holds. Remember, values are beliefs or ideas that
motivate someone to act or behave in a particular way; values dictate how we act, why we act or do not act.

Values Principles/Explanation
Write the 1st competing value here What does the first value represent or mean to the moral agent?

VALUE OF RESPONSIBILITIES Melissa Thomas is a single mother of four children and she have rights to quit to her job to take
responsibilities to them and to the family a midst of the pandemic. She took first what must be
the important to her and that is to take care of her children.
Write the 2nd competing value here What does the first value represent or mean to the moral agent?

VALUE OF COURAGE / INTEGRITY Melissa Thomas Scott is a brave woman, who is a cancer survivor. She did not give up but rather
fight the sickness because she have to live for the family and to the things she want to do of
being nurse. But she quit and still have a courage to tell everyone even to her lost.

Write the 3rd competing value here What does the first value represent or mean to the moral agent?

VALUE OF COMMUNICATION She express her emotion and her feelings in a public way using facebook, even their will be a
conflict in using social media platform. But communication is the only way to express in this
time of situation. The only fault she did is, she must talk first to the authorities of what she need
and what she wants to express to her annoyance.

Stakeholders
These are the people who have a stake in the issue. These are the people who have the most to gain or most to lose.
These are the people who are directly affected or involved.
Stakeholder Principles/Explanation
Name of the 1st stakeholder Why is the identified person a stakeholder? What will he gain or lose in the dilemma?

MELISSA THOMAS SCOTT

Melissa needs to take her responsibilities to her children. She gain the chance to show the love
and time to her children. Since she quit her job she lost her income the money she will earn.
Name of the 2nd stakeholder Why is the identified person a stakeholder? What will he gain or lose in the dilemma?

MELISSA’S CHILDREN
If Melissa didn’t quit her job she did not take her responsibilities to her children. Since she is a
single mother no one is responsible to take care of her children. If Melissa will be infected, no
one will took her place to take care for her children since she is a single mother and her parents
got also infected.

Name of the 3rd stakeholder Why is the identified person a stakeholder? What will he gain or lose in the dilemma?

MELISSA’ MANAGER
The manager is the one who a signed that Melissa must in that floor even thought he knows the
health history she encountered and even knows that she the only one who is taking care for her
children. And but still he putted Melissa in that floor which is full of patients with coronavirus
effected. So Melissa is annoyed and the reason she quit her job.

Name of the 4th stakeholder Why is the identified person a stakeholder? What will he gain or lose in the dilemma?

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in

Since Melissa has a health history of cancer, the chance she can get the virus is big because her
Albany
body is still in condition. If Melissa got infected (with or without symptoms), it will put the
company operation down, and it can easily spread to the whole team. This will cause the
company operations to stop and the employment incomes will be at risk.

Alternatives
The alternatives pertain to the possible choices or options.
The choices or options pertain to the decisions or solutions that may be chosen, done or taken by the person (moral
agent) who has the dilemma.

Alternatives, Options or Solutions Principles/Explanation

What is the explanation?

Melissa is a single mother of four children and with that it is very hard for her to work alone. If
Melissa did not quit her job, she might be lost the attention to her children since she will only
focuses to the patient and especially for herself not to got infected. And for the children to not
also infected.
Write the 1st solution here
If Melissa did not quit her job, there is still ways to take care of the children. She can get or hired
Melissa did not quit her job a children/baby sitter or a maid that can be promising. Since she is a single mother, a double
responsibilities is needed from the essentials, income and expenses for their family. She will
work hard to give the important needs and wants for her children.

What is the explanation?

Communication is an important skills that we need to bring always. But in the case given above
about Melissa’s annoyance to the assigned floor she got is out of the values. Because she use
social media to ease her fed-up and we all know that the best communication is to speak or talk
to the person, personally.
Write the 2nd solution here
If Melissa did spoke to the manager and explain everything that might be the manager forget
Melissa spoke well to the management of about her health history, she will not quit her job. And maybe if the manager knows her problem
the hospital where she works. regarding to her condition and understands it, perhaps she can be re-assigned to the other floor
with less infected virus and still can serve to the people with sick.

What is the explanation?

Melissa’s situation is a debatable where, she might to right or she might be wrong in any ways.
Melissa threatened the hospital that she burst it out her fed-up in a way she will leaving her job.
In this, hospital might be lacked of providing the work ethic for their employees. She is saying
that she is done, she is leaving and she walked out the hospital. But in this case Melissa is the one
