Writing Skills Reflection

Kelly reflects on improvements to their writing over the course of the semester. Reflection

Throughout the semester I have been able to see improvements in my writing.


Through each assignment I have seen the way I have been more intentional with my word
choice and the tone that I use. This course gave me the information I needed to
understand the purpose of different forms of writing, and I was able to understand how
the tone that is used does shift depending on the goal for the document. In addition to
improving my writing the planning step before writing was a great tool that I had not
been using for any of my college work. Prior to taking this course I saw planning as a
waste of time; however, I was able to see its benefits. Planning out the structure, goal, as
well as identifying different aspects of the assignment made facilitated the writing and it
allowed me to be more efficient with my time.
At the beginning of the semester my goal was to become more confident in my
writing skills. At the beginning I was not confident in my writing skills because I the
main type of documents that I wrote were science research papers. My hope was that this
course would push me to do different types of writing and give me more confidence in
my writing skills. In this course we were required to write different types of documents
that served a different purpose or a different audience. That is what I was looking for to
improve my writing and that is what it did. After reviewing the work that I have done this
semester I noticed the difference in word choice and the tone that I would use depending
on the document. I also noticed that the way I arrange my sentences would change based
in order to keep the audience or user engaged. In addition to improving my writing, this
course also allowed to understand the importance of formatting and its role in keeping the
reader engaged. I was able to apply the information I had learned from reading the
textbook and reviewing the PowerPoint presentation onto each writing assignment.
There are two assignments that I am proud of writing. The first one is the
instructions document. I was proud of the way that I was able to incorporate one of my
hobbies into an assignment. This assignment was also challenging because my
instructions were quite lengthy, but I was able to put my writing skills and my creativity
to use to figure out a way I could make the steps easier to follow. The other assignment
that I am proud of is the memo that I wrote for my workplace correspondence packet.
After receiving feedback from my professor, I was intimidated by all the changes that I
needed to make to make it better. I essentially rewrote my memo to make sure that it
would fit the guidelines of the assignment, which was quite challenging because I was
trying to use what I had as much as I could.
After completing all of the assignment in this class if I could add an assignment, it
would be writing a gossip article for a magazine. I think this would be a very interesting
assignment because this is not the type of writing we typically do. I also think it would be
interesting to have students think about the ethics of this type of writing. I think that
editing this kind of document would be fun for students. It would allow students to see
the different fallacies that is used in this writing as well as the play on words that I often
see in magazine articles.
