Signification of House
 
1st house :
1st house or so called Lagna is the most important of all the houses and
determines the longevity, health, character and nature of the native. It
specifically signifies the head. 
 
2nd house :
This house is also called 'Dhan' house and deals with money matters, one's
deposits, income tax, customs, computers. It represents one's family and face,
speech, food habits and left eye. 
 
3rd house :
Called 'Bhratra' house, this is the house of brothers and sisters, signifies
courage, boldness, short journeys and throat. One is made singer by this
house only. 
 
4th house :
4th house represents mother, motherland, house, mental peace, vehicles and
education. It is also called 'Matra Bhava'. It represents chest, particularly
lungs. 
 
5th house :
This house is also called as 'Putra Bhava' and represents children,
intelligence, speculation and love affairs. It indicates stomach and gives
professions of teacher, principal and gynaecologist. 
 
6th house :
This house is called 'Ripu Bhava', that is house of enemies. It governs
digestive system, quarrels court and jobs done by hand, like typing. 
 
7th house :
Also called 'Kalatra Bhava', it represents wife, business partner, marriage,
business or employment in a private firm. It governs sexual organs and
diseases thereof. 
 
8thhouse:
Called 'Ayusthan' it represents death, reasons of death, underground wealth,
historical things and monuments. It represents accidents, parental property,
life insurance, mining and anus. 
 
9th house :
Called house of luck and religion, it represents pilgrimage, higher studies like
doctorate, long journeys, languages like Sanskrit, Roman and Hebrew. It also
indicates grand parents and mental aptitude towards Yoga and Sadhana. It
represents hips. 
 
10th house :
This house is called 'Karma Sthana' and represents the acts one does. It
signifies father, government, politics, management. It governs knees and
defines the profession of a person. 
 
11th house :
11th house is house of gains or 'Labha' and represents sources of income,
elder brothers and sisters, friend's circle and legs. 
 
12 th house :
The house of loss and expenses is called 'Vyaya Sthana' and covers bad
habits, hospital, jail, long journeys and quests. It also indicates export and
import, also feet.

In a birth chart there are twelve house. Each house has been given
several names indicating the various subjects it deals with.
 
The names by which the first house or the Ascendant is known are Lagna,
Hora, Kalya, Deha, Udaya, Rupa, Seersha, Vartmana (present) and Janma.
 
The second house deals with Vitta (wealth), Vidya (learning). Swa, Annapana
(riches, food and drinks), Bhukti (eating), the right eye, face (Asya), letter or
document (Patrika), Speech (Vak) and Kutumba (family) and thus adopts
these appellations. 
 
The names given (or the subjects allotted) to third house are Duschikya, Uras
(breast), the right ear, army valour, prowess and brother.
 
 
The subjects or designations for the fourth house are house, land, maternal
uncle, a sister's son, a relation, a friend, conveyance, mother, kingdom, cow,
buffalo, perfume, clothes, ornaments, the nadir, hibuka, sukha (happiness),
water, bridge and river. 
 
The fifth house deals with (and has designations accordingly) the mark of the
sovereign, taxes, soul, intelligence, knowledge of the future, life, progeny,
belly, Vedic knowledge and other religious scriptures. 
 
The sixth house deals with debts, arms, thieves, wounds, diseases, enemies,
paternal relations, battle, wicked acts, sins, fear and humilialtion.
 
 
The subjects dealt with by the seventh house are desire, passion, setting,
sexual desire, a way, people, husband road and wife.
 
 
 
For the eighth house subjects allotted are Mangalya (the living of the husband
during the life time of the wife), Randhra, filthiness, mental pain, defeat or
humiliation, longevity, sorrow, blame, death, impurity impediments and
slavery.
 
 
The ninth house deals with preceptor (guru), deity (devta), father,
auspiciousness, poorvabhagya (previous luck), worship, penance, virtuous act
or virtue, grand son, and noble family. (Some of the learneds in the North are
of the view that all about father should be examined from the 10th house,
because 10th is 7th to the 4th house dealing with the father. The view of
Phaladeepika seems to be based on the logic that the 9th being 5th to 5th
house (dealing with progeny) should be the most appropriate house to be
connected with father). 
 
 
The subjects (names) designated for the 10th house are business or trade,
ranker position, honour, occupation, profession, sky or zenith, conduct,
quality, inclination, gait, command and Meshurana (to give orders). 
 
The matters to be considered from the eleventh house are gains, income,
acquisition, receipt of wealth, accomplishment, splendor and prosperity,
profits, veneration, elder brother or sister, left ear, anything juicy, delightful
news. 
 
The expressions used for the twelfth house are misery, leg, left eye, loss, spy,
last rites, poverty, sins, bad expenditure and imprisonment or confinement. 
 
Described above are the designations of the twelve houses or the subject
matters to be examined from them. 
The 3rd, the 6th, the 8th and 12th are known as Leena Sthanas (hidden
houses).  
The 6th, the 8th and 12th houses are also called Dusthanas (evil houses).
The remaining houses are considered good and auspicious
 
 The 1st, 4th, 7th and the 10th houses are termed as Kendra, Kantaka or
Chatushtaya. 
 
The 2nd, the 5th, the 8th and 11th houses from the Ascendant are called
Panaphara houses. The 3rd, the 6th, the 9th and the 12th are termed as
Apoklima houses. The 4th and the 8th are also known as Chaturasra houses.
The 3rd, the 6th, the 10th and 11th are Upachaya houses. The 5th and 9th
are called trines (Trikona houses). The trines have been considered as very
auspicious houses. 
 
 
House Grouping
Not single but multiple houses play role in any event of life. In KP terminology, these groups of houses
for the event is called "House Group". This is also referred as Formula by some KP astrologers. In the
table below we need to combine primary houses and supporting houses to come up with the house
grouping for the event. For example, event "Good health" has 1,11 as house group. Event "Proneness of
disease" has house group 1, 6, 8, 12. 

There are two uses of the House Grouping table below -

1. Knowing whether the event is promised in one's chart or not

If the cuspal sub lord of primary house signifies primary and supporting houses, the event is promised. 

2. When the event will happen  

Events happens when the planet-lords of current dasa (dasa lord, antardasa lord, pratyantardasa lord,
sookshma lord etc.) signifies house group. For example, one has "Good health" when one passes
through dasa of the planets signifies houses 1,11. Similarly, "Proneness to disease" happens when one
passes through dasa of the planets signifies 1,6,8,12.

How to use the table
There are several things to notice about the table:

1. The most important theme for each planet/lagna is listed at the

top of its list. If the planet's own nature reinforces the theme for the
house it rules, then I have made the theme word(s) bold -- and
sometimes underlined too -- to add emphasis.

2. The color of each table cell indicates the quality of the planet for
that particular ascendant. As shown in the legend at the bottom of
each of the two tables, planets ruling positive houses have green
cells, negative houses red cells, etc.

3. If you don't understand some of the terminology:

    a. Maraka indicates a planet that may cause illness, poverty, or

death.

    b. Kendra indicates ruling the 1st, 4th, 7th and or 10th houses.
Kendra-Adhipati means ruling two of these: 4th, 7th, or 10th, which
is said to cause challenges.
