with their environment.
4. Basic assumption of goal attainment theory is that nurse
and client communicate information, set goal mutually and
then act to attain those goals, is also the basic assumption
of nursing process.
5. “Each human being perceives the world as a total person in
making transactions with individuals and things in
environment”.
6. “Transaction represents a life situation in which perceiver
& thing perceived are encountered and in which person
enters the situation as an active participant and each is
changed in the process of these experiences”
5. 5 min. To discuss about CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK: PPT Lecture cum Explain about
the conceptual Imogene King’s Interacting Systems Framework discussion the conceptual
framework. emphasizes the importance of the interaction between frame work.
nurses and patients.
It views this interaction as an open system which is in
constant interaction with a variety of environmental
factors.
3 Systems: Personal, Interpersonal and Social Systems
Interacting systems
6. 5 min. To explain about MAJOR CONCEPTS: PPT Lecture cum explain about
the major 1. Personal system discussion the major
concept. 2. Interpersonal system concepts.
3. Social system
1. CONCEPT FOR PERSONAL SYSTEM:
Perception- a process of organizing, interpreting, and
transforming information from sense data and memory that
gives meaning to one's experience, represents one's image
of reality, and influences one's behavior. L
Self- a composite of thoughts and feelings that constitute a E
person's awareness of individual existence, of who and C
what he or she is. T
Growth and development-cellular, molecular, and U
behavioral changes in human beings that are a function of R
genetic endowment, meaningful and satisfying E
experiences, and an environment conducive to helping
individuals move toward maturity. C
Body image-a person's perceptions of his or her body. U
Time-the duration between the occurrence of one event M
and the occurrence of another event.
D
Space-the physical area called territory that exists in all
I
directions.
S
Learning-gaining knowledge.
C
U
2. CONCEPT FOR INTERPERSONAL SYSTEM:
S
Interaction-the acts of two or more persons in mutual
S
presence; a sequence of verbal and nonverbal behaviors
I
that are goal directed.
O
Communication-the vehicle by which human relations are
N
developed and maintained; encompasses intrapersonal,
interpersonal, verbal, and nonverbal communication.
Transaction—a process of interaction in which human
beings communicate with the environment to achieve goals
that are valued; goal-directed human behaviors.
Role—a set of behaviors expected of a person occupying a
position in a social system.
Stress—a dynamic state whereby a human being interacts
with the environment to maintain balance for growth,
development, and performance, involving an exchange of
energy and information between the person and the L
environment for regulation and control of stressors. E
Coping—a way of dealing with stress. C
T
3. CONCEPT OF SOCIAL SYSTEM: U
Organization-composed of human beings with prescribed R
roles and positions who use resources to accomplish E
personal and organizational goals.
Authority-a transactional process characterized by active, C
reciprocal relations in which members' values, U
backgrounds, and perceptions play a role in defining, M
validating, and accepting the authority of individuals
within an organization. D
Power-the process whereby one or more persons influence I
other persons in a situation. S
Status—the position of an individual in a group or a group C
in relation to other groups in an organization. U
Decision making—a dynamic and systematic process by S
which goal-directed choice of perceived alternatives is S
made and acted upon by individuals or groups to answer a I
question and attain a goal. O
Control—being in charge. N
7. 5 min. To discuss about PREPOSITION OF KING’S THEORY: PPT Lecture cum Explain about
preposition of discussion the preposition
king’s theory. 1. If perceptual interaction accuracy is present in nurse-client of King’s
interactions, transaction will occur. theory.
2. If nurse and client make transaction, goal will be attained
3. If goal are attained, satisfaction will occur.
4. If transactions are made in nurse-client interactions, growth
& development will be enhanced.
5. If role expectations and role performance as perceived by
nurse & client are congruent, transaction will occur.
6. If role conflict is experienced by nurse or client or both,
stress in nurse-client interaction will occur
7. If nurse with special knowledge skill communicate
appropriate information to client, mutual goal setting and
goal attainment will occur.
8. 15 min. To explain about NURSING PARADIGMS: PPT L Explain the

paradigm. Human being or person refers to social being who are rational and C paradigms.
sentient. Person has ability to : T

set goals C
select means to achieve goals and U
to make decision M
According to KING’S, Human being has three fundamental
needs: D
1. The need for the health information that is unable at the time I
when it is needed and can be used S
2. The need for care that seek to prevent illness, and C
3. The need for care when human beings are unable to help U
themselves. S
2. Health: S
Acc. To KING’S, Health involves dynamic life experiences of a I
human being, which implies continuous adjustment to stressors in O
the internal and external environment through optimum use of N
one’s resources to achieve maximum potential for daily living.
3. Environment:
Environment is the background for human interactions. It
involves:
• Internal environment: transforms energy to enable person L
to adjust to continuous external environmental changes. E
• External environment: involves formal and informal C
organizations. Nurse is a part of the patient’s environment. T
4. Nursing: U
Nursing Definition: “A process of action, reaction and R
interaction by which nurse and client share information about E
their perception in nursing situation.” and “ a process of human
interactions between nurse and client whereby each perceives C
the other and the situation, and through communication, they U
set goals, explore means, and agree on means to achieve M
goals.”
1. Action: is defined as a sequence of behaviors involving D
mental and physical actions. I
2. Reaction: which is considered as included in the sequence S
of behaviors described in action. C
3. In addition, King discussed: U
(a) goal S
(b) domain and S
(c) functions of professional nurse I
4. Goal of nurse: “To help individuals to maintain their O
health so they can function in their roles.” N
5. Domains of nurse: “includes promoting, maintaining, and
restoring health, and caring for the sick, injured and dying.
6. Function of professional nurse: “To interpret information
in nursing process to plan, implement and evaluate nursing
care.
Kings said in her theory, “A professional nurse, with
special knowledge of self and perception of personal
problem, meet as a strangers in natural environment. They
interact mutually, identify problems, establish and achieve
goals.
8. 5 min. To discuss about THEORIES OF GOAL ATTAINMENT: PPT L Explain
the theories of ASSUMPTIONS: Basic assumption of goal attainment theory is E theories of
goal attainment. that nurse and client communicate information, set goal mutually C Goal
and then act to attain those goals, is also the basic assumption of T attainment.
nursing process. U
R
Assessment: E
• Assessment occurs during interaction.
• The nurse brings special knowledge and skills whereas client C
brings knowledge of self and perception of problems of concern, U
to this interaction. M
• During assessment nurse collects data regarding client (his/her
growth & development, perception of self and current health D
status, roles etc.) I
• Perception is the base for collection and interpretation of data. S
• Communication is required to verify accuracy of perception, for C
interaction and transaction. U
S
Nursing diagnosis: S
• The data collected by assessment are used to make nursing I
diagnosis in nursing process. O
• In process of attaining goal the nurse identifies the problems, N
concerns and disturbances about which person seek help.
Planning:
• After diagnosis, planning for interventions to solve those
problems is done.
• In goal attainment planning is represented by setting goals and
making decisions about and being agreed on the means to achieve
goals.
• This part of transaction and client’s participation is encouraged
in making decision on the means to achieve the goals.
Implementation:
• In nursing process implementation involves the actual activities
to achieve the goals.
• In goal attainment it is the continuation of transaction.
Evaluation:
• It involves to finding out whether goals are achieved or not.
• In king description evaluation speaks about attainment of goal
and effectiveness of nursing care.
