Edge Jun 13 11

The document discusses graduation and the uncertainty that follows as new graduates enter the next phase of their lives. While plans may be in mind, life often takes unexpected turns as new opportunities and circumstances arise. The best approach is to remain open to change and keep moving forward rather than becoming fixed on expectations.

The Road Ahead Graduation is always a time of emotion. Bravado for the graduates who are finally kicking over the traces of schooling. Pride and relief for parents and family. A certain poignancy for everyone who stops to think about their own time of graduation and compares how circumstances are different now for kids starting out. And, there are also thoughts of the crazy and innocent, the embarrassing and idealistic things you did yourself. Theres a good reason why graduation should more appropriately be called commencement. As you step out the door, you might have a bigger plan in mind or you might not have any idea what your goals are at all the important point is that youre going. Its finally your chance at life and everything it offers. That sense of exhilaration still leaves us all envious. What starts to happen next is the big surprise. Life never turns out like you think it will. Very quickly it gets complicated and twisty. Plan or no plan you get caught up in one unforeseen set of circumstances after another. Lifes not as manageable as they told you it would be; theres a whole different rule book out there but no one lets you read it. It takes a long time to realize that unexpected change is not the biggest thing in the world. Its not the deal breaker. There are a lot of turns in the road and many lead to different jobs, professions and outcomes than you envisioned. Within a year and a half after high school most of what I expected to do came apart at the seams. Thats pretty standard for most of us. However, every twist became a different kind of opportunity; only so because there was no other choice at the time. Thats what life is all about the unexpected. How do you prepare for that? The best you can do is to stay fluid. That doesnt mean to accept whatever comes along. It means to try not to become so fixed that you cant accept change. When you hit the ground running on graduation be prepared to stay that way for a long, long time. Dont get caught up in your idea of yourself or what life ought to bring to you, just concentrate on running. Forward motion is what counts. It will keep you sharp and help you handle everything that life brings to your door. Good luck to you, grads. Go get em!! JK

Museum Musings
Written by Alice Hanlin Corky Jones Corky Jones has a place of recognition in
the Eastend Historical Museum Inc., and rightly so. In 1898 the year of the Klondike Gold rush, Harold Saunders Jones immigrated to Canada from England where he caught a train west, and disembarked at Maple Creek. He went ranching for Dan Pollock before setting up his own ranch at Chimney Coulee. This all happened before Eastend ever existed. As a child in England, Corky became interested in fossils when he would go fossil hunting with the geologist father of one of his friends. His interest and curiosity in the stories told by fossil formations was fuelled by petrified bones and fossils he found in his travel and hikes in this part of the world. He became an amateur geologist and palaeontologist as he began piecing together the amazing story of time in this valley. Corkys collection attracted the attention of the National Museum in Ottawa and the Museum of Natural History in Regina. Many of his finds are on display there. When others began to locate and collect specimens, it was decided to display them in a museum which was located in the old school. This collection has become the foundation of our Eastend Historical Museum. Corkys work has been recognized by the provincial government, and the Eastend Educational Association. Jones Peak, a height of land northwest of Eastend, has been named in his honour. Our Historical Museum has a display about Corky in a showcase. Come in and check it out. Find out more about this amazing pioneer whose curiosity and dedication helped set the stage for the museum and the community we have today. The complete Wallander series is a strong and well written group of inventive quirks and plots. The sadness is in knowing that the last story has been penned but the novels remain there to be explored and enjoyed for many years to come. Book Review:

The Troubled Man

It is never difficult to distinguish between a Scandinavian detective and a ray of sunshine. Henning Mankells Kurt Wallander, whose popularity kick-started the current vogue for miserable Nordic sleuths, is still the dourest of the lot. On a winter day in 2008, Hkan von Enke, a retired high-ranking naval officer, vanishes during his daily walk in a forest near Stockholm. The investigation into his disappearance falls under the jurisdiction of the Stockholm police. It has nothing to do with Wallanderofficially. But von Enke is his daughters future father-in-law. And so, with his inimitable disregard for normal procedure, Wallander is soon interfering in matters that are not his responsibility, making promises he wont keep, telling lies when it suits himand getting results. But the results hint at elaborate Cold War espionage activities that seem inextricably confounding, even to Wallander, who, in any case, is troubled in more personal ways as well. Negligent of his health, hes become convinced that, having turned sixty, he is on the threshold of senility. Desperate to live up to the hope that a new granddaughter represents, he is continually haunted by his past. And looking toward the future with profound uncertainty, he will have no choice but to come face-to-face with his most intractable adversary: himself. One way or another, it looks like Kurts time is up and the ending makes it emphatically clear that this novel is his swan song. This is the 10th Wallander mystery. If the Wallander books are Mankells finest achievement, it is perhaps because Wallander so manifestly represents the slow decay of Swedish society reflected in the deterioration of his own body, mental health and morale. Yet, the birth of his first grandchild offers some ray of hope into the future.
