When Gaming Becomes An Addiction

Video game addiction has evolved from simple games in the 1970s to complex, immersive experiences that can consume significant amounts of time. While some view gaming as beneficial for cognitive development and social interaction, excessive gaming can lead to negative consequences and is debated as a form of addiction similar to gambling. Critics argue that video gaming lacks the financial risks associated with gambling, distinguishing it from other addictive behaviors.

Video Game Addiction

Since the emergence of extremely rudimentary games in the 1970s, video games have
caught the imagination of Americans. Despite the fact that the graphic aspects of these basic
programs were unsophisticated in comparison to today's intricate, varied games, many
children, parents, and teachers enjoyed them,This new pastime rapidly enthralled teenagers
and adults alike. As players strove to win again and over, it became clear that video games
had the potential to absorb a significant amount of time. Today, video game addiction is
regarded as a form of compulsive gambling in which the thrill of winning becomes one of the
key motives for playing.

Most games were only available on arcade machines in the early days of video games,
which were not accessible 24 hours a day. Games are one of the most popular features of
social networking sites these days, and they may be played on handheld game devices,
personal computers, or smart phones almost continuously. Video games have gotten far
more complex, with rich alternate worlds, characters, and storylines,There are a lot of
characters in this novel, and it has a lot of plot twists. Introverted children and teens may
discover that interacting with “real” peers is avoided by communicating primarily with other
online gamers, posing as characters with awe-inspiring abilities.

when gaming becomes an addiction

Video gaming is not universally seen as a hazardous or addictive pastime. Many individuals,
including parents, believe that video games help children develop their imaginations,
collaborate, and strengthen their cognitive skills. However, when young people spend the
majority of their time playing video games rather than academics, physical activity, family
events, or other activities, it can lead to negative consequences, the benefits of gaming
seem less certain.

There is some debate over whether video gaming is akin to gambling, drug misuse,
or alcoholism as an addiction.

According to Psychology Today, the comparison of video gaming to gambling is

inaccurate because video games do not include financial risks or material losses.
Winning a video game demands cognitive skills and quick reflexes, whereas
gambling involves luck.
