3. Give Reasons for the following statements.
a. Green plants are called producers of an ecosystem.
Green plants are called producers of an ecosystem because all green
plants can prepare their food themselves through photosynthesis.
b. Decomposers play important role for environmental balance.
When animals or plants die, they are decomposed or decayed by
decomposers. The decomposed materials get mixed to the soil and
make soil fertile. This helps to keep environmental balance.
c. Carnivorous animals indirectly depend upon plants for their food.
Carnivorous animals eats herbivorous and herbivorous animals are
dependent on plants for food. So if plants are not there then there
will be no herbivore ultimately all carnivore also die.
4. Answer these questions.
a. Explain the various components of environment.
The components of ecosystem are mainly categorized into two types.
They are biotic components and physical or abiotic components. Biotic
components are further divided into three groups: producers,
consumers and decomposers.
b. Explain the various types of consumers.
Consumers are divided intro three categories. They are :
i. First class consumer (primary consumers)
The animals which eat plants only are called first class consumer.
Examples: Herbivorous animals like rabbit, deer, sheep, etc.
ii. Second class consumer ( secondary consumers)
The animals which eat first class consumers are called second class
consumers. Examples: Carnivorous animals like cat, snake, jackal, etc.
iii. Third class consumer (tertiary consumers):
The animals which eat second class consumers are called third class
consumers. Examples: Carnivorous animals like Tiger, lion, whale, etc.
c. Explain the physical components of environment.
Non-living components of an ecosystem make physical or abiotic
components of an ecosystem. Air, water, soil, sunlight, minerals, etc.
are abiotic components. Physical components can provide shelter, food,
and nutrient to biotic components.
d. Explain the interrelationship among producers, consumers and
decomposers.
Producers prepare their own food through photosynthesis. In this
process, they take carbon dioxide from atmosphere and absorb water
and minerals from soil. Most producers are plants. Producers are at
the beginning of any simple food chain. All animals directly or
indirectly depend upon plants for their food. Herbivorous and
omnivorous animals directly get their food from plants. Carnivorous
animals get their food from herbivorous animals. When animals and
plants die, their dead bodies are decomposed by microbes. the
decomposed materials gets mixed with the soil. These decomposed
materials are absorbed by the green plants to prepare their food. This
natural process continues in the nature continuously.
