LESSON 4
MULTIPLICATION OF WHOLE NUMBERS
Multiplication of whole numbers is the sort way to do repeated addition. Multiply
2345081 and 4 by expansion method. = (2000000 × 4) + (300000 × 4) + (40000 × 4) +
(5000 × 4) + (80 × 4) + (1 × 4) The number by which any number is multiplied is known
as the multiplicand. The result of the multiplication is known as the product.

Multiplication is a description of repeated addition.

In the addition of 5+5+55+5+5, the number 5 is repeated 3 times. Therefore, we say we

have three times five and describe it by writing 3×53×5. Thus, 3×5=5+5+53×5=5+5+5.

Since multiplication is repeated addition, we should not be surprised to notice

that carrying can occur. Carrying occurs when we find the product of 38 and 7:

First, we compute 7×8=567×8=56. Write the 6 in the ones column. Carry the 5. Then
take 7×3=217×3=21. Add to 21 the 5 that was carried: 21+5=2621+5=26. The product is
266.

Find the following products.

Solution

3×4=123×6=18        Write the 2, carry the 1.Add to 18 the 1 that was carried: 18 + 1 =

19.3×4=12    Write the 2, carry the 1.3×6=18    Add to 18 the 1 that was carried: 18 + 1
= 19. The product is 192.
