New York City is definitely a busy city. No matter where I go, I can see
confusion that never seems to end. There seems to be an endless amount of cars
flowing through the streets and honking their monotone horns. Some of the vehicles
are large trucks that seem to add the never-ending noise generated by rest of the
things around me. Everyone seems to be in a hurry.
I just arrived at Penn Station in New York City. The underground terminal we
are in reminds me of Underground Atlanta and has stores and shops lining the walls.
As I walk by, I can smell all sorts of things. When I walk by the Starbucks Coffee, I can
smell coffee and milk.
When I pass by the numerous bagel shops, I can smell bagels and cream
cheese. It is so busy here; I can even smell the cologne on the people hurriedly passing
by. When I look around, I see the huge departures board with names of stations and
corresponding train numbers and departure times. Looking down, all I can see is the
movement of a mass of people. Some are carrying bags. Some are dragging rolling
backpacks. All seem to be unconscious of anything going on around them, but they
somehow manage not to run into anyone else, almost operating like a clock.

Percussion Instruments
Percussion means striking. All percussion instruments make musical sounds when
struck by the hands, by the fingers, or by some suitable implement. Bells and gongs, bars
of wood or metal, and even bowls and thin stones make fine percussion instruments.
The orchestras of Eastern people sometimes have a wonderful variety of these and
other kinds of percussion instruments, including drums of every size and shape. But in
Western symphony orchestra percussion instruments are not very numerous. The bowl-
shaped kettle drums, or timpani, are almost always present. They give a clear, definite note
and a sonorous tone that can be as soft or as loud as the player wishes.
Other types of drums may also be used. Cymbals are brass plates that are clashed or
jangled together. The triangle is a metal rod left open at the corner. The xylophone is a row
of wooden bars. The glockenspiel has metal bars that sound ringing and enchanting. It is
often played by keyboard, called a celesta. Only the kettledrums are
regular percussion sections of the orchestra in Western music.

Last Sunday, I was setting in the local library, I started to read a medical

cholera. As I read the list of symptoms, it occurred to me that perhaps I had cholera
myself. I sat for a while, too frightened to move.
Then, in a kind of dream, I started to turn the pages of the book again. I came to

hepatitis. And yellow fever. And so it went on. I read through the whole book, and by the
end I came to the conclusion that I had every illness. There was only one illness I didn’t
have – and that was housemaid’s knee.
I sat and thought, and I became more and more worried. I wondered how long I had

it seems start off. I looked at my watch to time it – it was beating 147 times a minute. I
tried to feel my heart. I couldn’t feel it. It wasn’t beating. I stuck my tongue out and tried
to look at it. I could only see the end of it, but from that I was even more certain than
before that I had yellow fever.
I went straight to my doctor, who was a good friend of mine. “What’s the matter with
you?” he asked. “I have every illness in the medical encyclopedia.” I told him how I read
the medical encyclopedia. Then he opened my mouth and looked at my tongue, and he felt
my pulse, and he listened to my heart. Then he sat down and wrote a prescription.
It said:
3 good meals every day
A two-mile walk every day morning
Be in bed at 11 o’clock every night
Don’t read medical books!
