FITNESS LOG
I find Module 4: Officiating Officials/Rules and Regulations of Basketball very informative
and helpful; informative in a way that it provided me adequate data about the topic and the
intended objective of this lesson; and helpful to the point that I realized how off beam I am when
it comes to hand signals.
This module focuses on the basic and standard rules in Basketball, the mechanics of
officiating Basketball, and the objective to enjoy playing Basketball with observance to the rules
while having sportsmanship.
Under this module, I’ve learned a lot about the different official body of Basketball including
how the staff manages the play, the role of referee and rules that a player should follow, official
signals, and many more. But what piques my attention the most is the hand signals that a referee
used in conveying fouls and violations committed by either player/team. A foul (closed fist hand
sign) is an illegal personal contact or unsportsmanlike conduct on the court or sidelines of a game,
while violations (open fist hand sign) are called on any player who breaks or violate the rule of
Basketball; this are usually simple mistakes like traveling and stepping.
Then, there’s types of personal fouls with hand signals being portrayed in the module. The
first one is the ‘holding foul’ as what the name suggest, happens when opponent/defender grabs,
or pull an offensive player. Next is ‘pushing foul’, again, as what the name suggest, happens when
defender pushes an offensive player. Other personal fouls are illegal use of hands foul, blocking
foul, and charging foul. Of course, there are penalties in relation to personal fouls and those are
shooting foul (2-point shot) where player gets to shoot free throw(s). Other penalties are Shooting
foul (3-point shot), non-shooting fouls, and team fouls.
I also learned the different types of violations and the most common (based on my
personal observation) among all is the traveling, where the player or ball handler takes too many
steps while dribbling. Then there’s also double dribble which calls when the ball handler stops
dribbling and then attempts to dribble again. Other violations are backcourt violation, inbound
pass violation (5-second violation), 10-second violation, three to five second violation, closely
guarded violation, jump ball violation, and out of bounds designation.
Personally, I am not quite familiar with the rules of basketball, that is why I did not also
misunderstand the rules, but the module listed few rules that some or maybe more people used
to think are part of the rules in which I find enlightening. One of these few rules is that if a player
attempts to set a screen and is moving, it is not considered a foul unless contact is made. I was
also surprised to know that there are myths in basketball particularly in rules. I read that some of
these are “reaching in” foul where there is no actually foul called “reaching in” found in the
rulebook; and another one is when the player dribbles the ball above their head, wherein dribbling
the ball above player’s head line is not a violation as long as dribblers hand stays on top of the
ball.
Lastly, is the Official NFHS Basketball Signals which encompasses of 38 hand signals
used by referee in relying fouls and violations. I learned I a lot about this lesson as expected and
I really enjoyed portraying those basketball signals where I believed will be useful in a particular
time of my life.
In my daily life, I think that the best use of the things that I learned here for now is also
through teaching. Nowadays, there is a great danger before us, I can’t think of any use of these
knowledge for now due to many restrictions, we can’t even hold leagues because of the situation.
Although, I believe that through teaching or by passing my knowledge to the younger ones (which
I’ll start with my younger cousins) somehow, I’m hoping that it will help them when the time comes
that everyone is free to enjoy team sports like basketball without worrying to be infected.
I am confident that these learnings will be advantageous for me, I can utilize it when our
church decided to resume our youth camp, I will volunteer to act as a referee or coach and that
would be amazing. I can imagine myself calling for a violation while using hand signals. I can even
participate in sport events in school or in our barangay, I can be part of staff overseeing leagues
in our municipality, after all, I am part of a community based youth organization that hold many
happenings focusing on youth empowerment.
Another important lesson I learned under this module is the power of sports in
strengthening bonds between family members. Sports promote healthy relationships among
family members, and it is beneficial in many ways, thus I hereby conclude that playing sports with
the people close to our hearts is healthy as eating vegetables and fruits.
