Global Training at Google

Google's global management training program is unique in its hands-on approach of sending managers to different parts of the world to experience the local challenges firsthand. This allows the managers to develop a more accurate understanding of real-world issues and build strategies to address them. The program has been successful for Google employees because it gives them a comprehensive view of what is happening globally, enabling them to generate appropriate strategies. However, the approach may be difficult for smaller companies to replicate due to limited resources and organizational capabilities required. While effective for Google, continuous learning and developing theories after trips could further improve the program.

Global training at Google

1. What, if anything, is unique about Google’s approach to global management training?

We consider that the first-hand approach to the different challenges around the world
is one the unique elements about Google's global management training. First, because
these experiences allow them to have an accurate and updated vision of what is
happening in the world, which in the future will help them to develop strategies for
actions that could be tried when they return to the field. Second, this type of approach
becomes even more crucial in international companies like Google, which seek to
connect and build a nexus for millions and millions of people around the world; since
if their own managers are not aware of the challenges facing them, how will they
create strategies that can help them succeed?

In brief, Google´s global management training illustrates clearly how companies are
looking for new and unique ways to educate their managers and teach them about the
global challenges, especially those that directly affect them and encourage them to
seek creative solutions.
2. Why do you think this program has been so successful for Google employees?
We consider that this program has been successful for the Google employees because
it gives them a complete picture of what is happening, which allows them to generate
appropriate strategies to achieve their objectives as a company. Basically, these first-
had insights are the ideal tool for them to face the challenges of the world.
3. Would Google’s approach work better at some types of organizations than others?
Explain
The success of Google’s approach will depend on the type of company, since Google
is one of the most important and powerful companies in the world with all the
necessary resources to be able to apply this approach, however, it is very difficult to
apply for smaller companies due to many reasons. First, not all companies are
recognized worldwide as Google is, and these companies do not have the budget
needed to implement the strategy used by Google. In addition, applying this approach
also requires great organizational skills that many companies do not have. That's why
although Google's approach is very good, it would probably work better only in large
and important companies.
4. If you were in charge of Google’s training program, what might you do to improve its
effectiveness? Why?
Google's program is great, that is reflected in the fact that the company is one of the
most important in the world, however, a small improvement that they could apply is
that of a strategy that provides a continuous learning journey after the trip, and not
only during the trip. Also, managers needed to develop theories based on what they
have learned for the company, so it would be good if at the end of the trip they take
some time to find out in the same place if they are true or not.
