What Is It

Housekeeping is not merely cleanliness. It is also keeping work areas neat and orderly by
storing materials, checking the PPE, and keeping records, maintaining halls and floors free of slip
and trip hazards, and removing of waste materials. Effective housekeeping ease the flow of
materials and improve productivity because tools and materials are easy to find.

Importance of Storing Materials Properly

Storing of materials properly reduce the risk of accidents because they are organized.
Returning tools promptly after use also reduces the chance of being misplaced or lost. Making
sure that tools are properly stored, cleaned and well maintained, saves time and money and
makes your job easy to do/ accomplish.
Therefore, workers should regularly inspect, clean and repair all tools and take any
damaged or worn-out tools to avoid accident and danger.

Steps in Storing Materials Properly

1. Assign a portion of your garage, shed or basement closet as a place to store tools.
Allocate plastic bins to store smaller farm tools and equipment.
2. Clean out dirt and debris from tools. Set up racks, mount racks along the wall of your
garage or storage area to hang garden tools, cords and other equipment.
3. Create and designate a library area or bin within the storage space for user manuals
and warranty sheets, and store booklets alphabetically and in a dry area as reference in
operating the equipment and others.
4. Flammable gases are to be kept in a separate, well-ventilated area. According to the
Occupational Safety and Health Association, gasoline and kerosene must be stored in approved
containers located away from other flammable materials. These can be stored only in a specially
constructed room that is able to contain a fire for one to two hours and keep flammable materials
50 feet away from sources of heat or flame.
5. For chemicals and other hazardous materials including cleaning materials, should be
kept in their original containers or in properly labeled containers away from the reach of children.

Do Periodic Maintenance Storage Areas

1. Look for problems inside each storage area on a regular basis. Be sure there are no
apparent fumes.
2. Use a separate broom and dustpan for chemical cleanup. Be sure to lock these tools
away when you are not using them.

Lesson 2: Checking Personal Protective Equipment

What’s New

Activity 1. Let Me Know

Directions: Think of some farm PPE’s and tell what part of the body the equipment protect. Follow
the table below. Write your answers on the activity notebook.

Farm PPE Part of the Body Protected by PPE

What Is It

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

It is any device designed to be used by an individual in a workplace. The purpose is to
reduce exposure from hazards and risks. PPE should regularly examine by expert staff according
to manufacturer’s instructions. Simple check-up may be carried out by the user, provided that he
or she has been instructed and trained.
The examination, maintenance and repair of PPE should be done regularly to ensure
functionality and avoid damage or worn out.
Storing also of PPE must be according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This is very
important because PPE parts are deteriorating due to exposure to dirt, oil, UV rays, sunlight etc.
Safety is the major concern for laborers and skilled laborers.
PPE includes items such as protective helmets, eye protection, high-visibility clothing,
safety footwear, safety harnesses, and sometimes, respiratory protective equipment.

Lists of Basic PPE

1. Boots or Wellies: These will provide an extra layer of protection against falling tools/
equipment or trampling by livestock.
2. Resistant Gloves: Protection against damage to the hands, these gloves do offer an
extra line of defense against cutting hazardous and sharp equipment and dirt.
3. Hard Hats / Native Hats: These will offer protection from the sun, falling objects and
prevent head injuries caused by slips, trips, and falls from a height.
4. Safety Harnesses: During prolonged work at height (for instance, restocking a loft, or
repairing tall machinery, cutting branches of twigs), it is sensible to wear a tethered
safety harness to prevent falls.
5. Hearing Protection (Earmuffs): Farms can be noisy sometimes especially farmer
needs to cut some branches of trees using chainsaw.
6. Respirator: It is an apparatus worn over the mouth and nose or the entire face to
prevent the inhalation of dust, smoke, or other chemicals like pesticides during spraying.
7. Safety Glasses: These are shields of the worker's eyes to prevent eye damage. They
block dirt, dust, debris, chemicals, or liquids from entering the eyes. Glasses have
lenses that provide visibility.

Commonly Used PPE When Working with Chemicals

PPE Protects Hazards

Safety Glasses eyes chemical liquid splashes, dust
Hard Hat head falling materials
Ear Protection hearing excessive noise
Gloves hands corrosives, toxic materials
Respirator lungs toxic gases, vapors, fumes or dust
Clothing skin toxic or corrosive materials
Footwear feet corrosive, toxic materials

Proper Care and Maintenance

The storage area for PPE should be clean, tidy, and organized. Stacking things on top of
each other should be avoided. Instead, utilize organizational tools like wall hooks and shelves. By
doing so, good housekeeping is being implemented.
7
Guidelines to Follow to Ensure functionality of Personal PPE
1. Look for broken or damaged components before using PPE.
2. Repair or replace if it is needed.
3. Replace PPE that has expired or reached its usable lifespan.
4. Clean reusable PPE after use and store in a clean area such as a cupboard, drawer
or resealable container.
5. Report broken, damaged or contaminated PPE.
