ABSTRACT

It is not the matter or a topic for research only, being the part of this
society, we have many responsibilities to keep the harmony of society
and rise our voice against violence and any unlawful act or act which is
not allow in Islam in the treatment of humans This study explores
different aspects of Marginalization of Transgender and highlighted the
issues of gender dysphoric people in T.V drama series PARIZAAD by
HASHIM NADEEM. The research highlights Marginalization on
different grounds. First is Marginalization of Transgender which is faced
by GURU and his COMPANIONS of same gender. Second is the
Marginalization of BUBBLY as a women “SAIMA or BUBBLY” and a
mental patient who is ignored by her parents because of lack of
understanding and the fear of society. Bubbly feelings of two gender in
one body shows the major issue of gender dysphoria, which is a mental
disease and how it isdeveloped in children and how it is increased from
normal to extreme level, which results in destruction for patients and her
family. Guru character symbolize the Marginalization of his all
community and how they are feeling and expect from society by their
experiences of suffering and violation of their rights and how society can
better understand and make their life beautiful by their positive and
behavior and how government can control and address this issue in a
good way .It is also included that how parents can understand people
like Bubbly and how they can easily get rid from this mental disease at
earliest stages and how government can address this issues in rural areas.
This study explores and highlighted two major corelated issues of
gender dysphoria and transgender issues, which can also be known as
the extreme of gender dysphoria. It conclude the importance of society
by cooperation and better treatment of all genders by society including
Parents, friend, relatives and governmentinstitutions and how we can
grow and live with peace and progress by securing the rights of all
genders to make a good society.

CHAPTER 1
NTRODUCTION:
This chapter is divied into following main sections: Background of the study,
Statement of the Problem, Research Question, Significance of the Study,
Chapter Division and Key Terms Explained.
1.1. Background of the study.

13
Allah almighty created the world , is generally consisting on two types ofgenders
i.e. as masculine or feminine, but there is a small part of population not recognized
by male or female but are transgender People.
Being a transgender is not a mental illness, but people who are transgender face
unique challenges, such as gender dysphoria and discrimination, which can effect
their mental health.
The term gender dysphoria is a new term which has replaced the previously used
term gender identity disorder.
The definition of transgender is evolving with new generations. The term
“transgender” falls into the broad category of “gender diverse.” A person who
identifies as trans may be:
A trans man who is AFAB but identifies as male.
A trans woman who is AMAB but identifies as female.
Nonbinary, genderqueer, gender fluid, Two-Spirit or another term that describes a
person who identifies as neither (or both) male or female, a third gender or
genderless.
Gender dysphoria is a general term used for a person who have feel discomfort
about their birth gender. The extreme condition results in complete gender reversal
known as Transsexual. In case of Gender dysphoria oneself feeling as "being
captured in the body of wrong sex".

Gender dysphoria has a range of impacts on daily life. For example,

people may avoid sport or entering sexual encounters because they may
find attending to their own body a source of disgust or distress, because
they experience it as the ‘wrong’ gender. Or they feel another’s attention
to their gendered body is unbearable. Equally they may face a multitude
of social restrictions based on real or feared resistance from others
(Dowers,2019).

Gender phenomenon view differently in different societies. They face different

hurdles and discrimination in the form of ,their treatment by people in society and
lack of interest of parents, which results in complete isolation, mental disorder,
inferiority complex, anxiety and intensively results in suicide.

14
Such people don’t have any fault in wrong body birth. But still, people
don’t feel their misseries. Their families are not ready to accept them considering
them a scar on their honors and dignity. In their families, they are sexually
harassed and cannot acquire justice. Even they face such question in their own
family that , "What have I done to deserve having a sick child".
They are viewed as a prostitute, or "others".Society treat them as they are aliens
and nonhuman or they are culprit. The aggression, and rejection results in
segregation and also lead towards the isolation from society and efforts to suicide,
drugs addiction, and self-mutilation.
Transgender and gender dysphoric people have been facing exploitation and
discrimination from many departments like police department, health department
and other educational institutions. When they approach them for help and
protection, they could get very little protection rather very often they are rejected.
One of the gloomiest parts of transgender life is that they can't get legitimate
assistance from the police if somebody hurts them. The
police do not enlist their case. This gives courage to the common people to hurt
them.
They are having the same mental abilities, physical abilities,as like other human
beings. There are certain rights , which was given to them by constitution and acts
but they are still deprived from the fundamental rights.
They are having abilities but still not able to find job in any institution. On the
educational side, most transgender students cannot access schools because of the
illegalization of sexual orientation and discrimination in schools.
This issue is not just in Pakistan but also in other part of world. Parizaad is a
Pakistani television series written by Hashim Nadeem.

1.2 About Writer of the Drama “Hashim Nadeem”

Hashim Nadeem is a Pakistani Urdu  novelist, drama and fiction writer, poet, film
producer and directorParizad drama seriel is based on his novel of the same name ,
published in 2014, and later drama serial aired on Hum Television from 20 July
2021,directed by Shahzadkashmiri and produced by MominaDuraid
productions.
He has also produced 27 telefilms and 11 drama serials as first private
producer, among four of them have won different awards. His films

15
include Abdullah, and his novels are BachpankaDecember,Khuda or
Mohabat , AikMuhabbataursahi, and Muqaddas.
He has been awarded the Tamgha e Husn e Karkardagi by the Pakistani
government. He has been also provided with the Bolan Award for the best
situation sequential (PTV) for his sequential ‘ ‘Sipaahee’. His services have
been recently awarded by "Poona festival award".
Hashim Nadeem, no doubt, is a great writer and novelist. He is the writer of
freshness and affection, which he brought through his open mind.He is the
mind of Cadet College Pataro. Bolan Medical College set his life goal as he
passed civil services exams through this college. Later, he became an
assistant commissioner and served his hometown district for years.
He was born in Quetta, Balochistan,He got his early education in cadet
college Pataro, after studying at the Bolan Medical College. He passed civil
service examination in 1996 and served as Assistant commissioner in
Quetta. His Biggest Achievement Parizad is trending on social media.
The story revolves around a dark-skinned college student, Parizaad. Parizaad
is someone who has grown up with self esteem and confidence issues.
Hashim Nadeem enlightened the major dilemma of Pakistani society, which
is the alienation and marginalization of gender dysphorics and trans
gender,inParizad
In His novel major work are
 BachpanKaDecember,KhudaAurMuhabbat,Abdullah,Saleeb-e-
Ishq,AikMuhabbataurSahi,Muqaddas,Parizaad, and major work of Television dramas
 KhudaAurMuhabbat,KhudaAurMuhabbat (season 2),Dhaani,
 Visaal,IshqZaheNaseeb,
 Raqs e Bismil,KhudaAurMuhabbat.

In the drama serial, we see that Guru is transgender, which instantly got the
public’s attention. In Pakistan, transgender roles are almost never given to
transgender actors. Additionally, their representation is limited to their role in
entertainment, rather than focusing on individual stories.
The show’s writer, Hashim Nadeem shared some tidbits about Guru’s
character. In an Instagram post, the writer explained the inspiration behind
this character. Turns out this character is based on someone Hashim Nadeem
knew in real life.

16
In the current slot, Parizaad one of the most favorite and popular dramas on
board also managed to highlight big issues. The character ‘Guru’ in the
drama is portrayed by the finest actor Asad Malik .
“GURU”….Pareezad shows the 13th episode with an entry of Guru.., A
transgender with a heart of Gold but having an eye of the Tiger for his
enemies.
Guru is a real life character..whom I met during my service posting tenure
while I was serving as an Assistant Commissioner.

Pareezad is a tale of different characters, most of whom I have interacted

during my different postings & I find myself privileged being a civil servant
that I have observed many shades of life, which I’m sharing through my
script with my audience”
After Guru, Parizaad took on another set of gendered issues with Bubbly. As
the drama serial showcases the young character pummeling gender
stereotypes, Netizens were full of praises.
Saboor Aly portrays a character of Saima,Bubbly, andDilawar in drama
serial. The character names role and the variation of names clearify the issues
of Gender dysphoria.
Parizaad  has been providing a voice to marginalized voices over the past few
episodes. From Guru to Bubbly.
Bubbly was introduced as a fierce, outspoken, and a naughty young girl who
is also a complete misfit and has gender identity issues as well. The fact that
she could not continue with her studies also suggests that she might have
learning disabilities.
Trans people experience , the routine indignity, inequity, discrimination,
violence, food , issue of shelter and Health insurance ,limited access to
education and unemployment,
complex procedures for changing identification documents, strip transgender
people of their rights and limit access to justice, and loss of opportunities for
economic and social advancement in their lives. . This results in gross
violations of human rights on the part of state and society at large.

17
Yet, like all other human beings, trans people have fundamental rights – to
life, liberty, equality, health, privacy, speech, and expression, but constantly
face denial of these fundamental rights because of the rejection of the trans
person's right to their gender identity.

1.2. Statement of the Problem.

This is relavant to Bubbly , Guru and his companions who suffer from the very early age of life and
not accepted by parents and society.Bubbly suffer from gender dysphoria, because of this ,the
character faced a lot of hurdles.Parents and society harsh treatment compalled the character to leave
parents and home , without any other facility but rescued by a transgender ,who was also living with
other companions without their family. The character gradually develops strength and live life
according to his/her own will. The researcher through light on the specific problem of alienation and
marginalization related to Bubbly,Gurru and his companions in the Tv serial Parizaad.

1.3 Research Questions.

1: How the theme of alienation and marginalisation of transgenders and gender dysphoria is
portrayed through the characters of Bubbly, Guru and his companions in the T.V serial Parizaad?
2:What constraints do parents and society pose on the transgender community, which lead to the
character assassination of these characters?
3: How both parents and society are responsible for pushing such people into acts like prostitution?
Can individuals like Bubbly and Guru live in a society freely, and not be relegated to a safe house?
Can they be ‘themselves’?

1.4 Significance of the study.

Prictically, the writer expects that this study will give contribution to the society in order to convince
parents and individual in society for good treatment and step to rootout the reasons and results of
this harsh treatments by sharing the social disadvantages of alienation and marginalization of gender
dysphoric patient which is the basic stage of transgender . Theoratically the writer hopes that it could
give advantages to gender studies and literature development in improving knowledge about
marginalization of transgenders .

CHAPTER 2
LITERATURE REVIEW
This chapter compromises of the following main sections: first one discusses
the outline story of the TV serial parizaad and second one about previous
works done on gender dysphoria and transgenders marginalization and
hardship in society.

Literature as poetry or prose that has excellence of form or expression

and expressing ideas of permanent or universal interest. It is a powerful tool
in the hands of creative writers with which they can introduce and highlight
the vices and evils of any society. It has deep relation with society and its
people as it is used by many creative writers for the establishment of norms,
values and tradition in a society. Literature is a method of recording,
preserving, and transmitting knowledge and entertainment, and can also
have a social, psychological, spiritual, or political role.for the analysis. There
are different genres of literature like novel, drama, short stories, fiction, non
fiction and poetry.

20
2.1 Previous Works Done on Gender dysphoria and Transgender marginalization

Transgenders are the most neglecting class of every society of the world, especially, in 3rd world
countries as they are seen by hate and hatred because of their gender. Number of researcher
highlights the causes of transgenderism, the need for medical rectification, available treatments,
and the Islamic concept. At presently, many curative measures have been invented by medical
science to rectify them. If these methods are used at an early stage or later, their sex can be
rectified. As a result, they can live ,their lives like normal people to some extent and can get
equal opportunity in employment, health care, housing as well as for their self-worth.
Furthermore, it will also be helpful for them to live successfully without humiliation.
(Yaseen,2022)

The effective solution of many problems of transgender and marginalize community is society .
Society can be healer and their good treatment can make them a life of happiness and balance
like others . Every research and article focused that this marginalize community is marginalize
and in stress because of harsh treatment of society including parents , friend and fellow etc .

The American Psychiatric Association has changed the diagnosis of gender

identity disorder to gender dysphoria (GD) In the fifth edition of the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders .
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) has recently issued a Briefing
Paper regarding the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act of 2018
of Pakistan. Stating the passage of this Act a crucial progress, ICJ suggests
that this Enactment was made under the international law obligations of
Pakistan. This paper, while not agreeing with this observation, argues that
this law has been promulgated on misrepresented interpretation of the
international law as presented in the ICJ Briefing Paper as well.
Additionally, it undermines the rights Of the indigenous gender-variant
people of Pakistan as well as the legal and social Framework of the country.
The law is more aligned to the global movement of the Lesbian, gay, bisexual
and trans (LGBT) communities and contains serious definitional and
conceptual flaws. This study suggests working out a scheme for
Mainstreaming gender-variant persons on the basis of the Constitution of
Pakistan, guidelines of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the recognized
Principles of international law. This would require a thorough review of the
current law with a changed approach and reference point.

21
The issues related to non-conforming gender fall at an interesting Intersection
of scientific, sociological and legal knowledge and cannot be Covered in one
paper. This paper has, therefore, chosen to identify a few Obvious issues with
the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018 and the approach
underlying it. It has underscored the need to Address the question of the
rights of the transgender and intersex Persons without unnecessarily going
out of the box. Denying and defying The existing norms and values is more
likely to further jeopardize the Rights and status of the transgender and
intersex persons as well as Disturb the overall fabric of the social and legal
framework of Pakistan.
In fact, the contemporary global movement around gender has Done a
disservice to transgender people around the world by knitting Their
fundamental rights together with the lesbian, gay, and bisexual Persons
whose claim of rights has deeply divided societies. Viewed in this
Perspective, transgender people are seen majorly in the context of sexual
Freedoms and their fundamental rights as humans are often undermined Or at
least overshadowed. Such framing has stereotyped transgender as a people
who seek unhindered and unregulated right to sexual activity. Since this
group is almost everywhere denied of several fundamental Rights that are
acknowledged by law as well as the saner segments of Society, the lesbian,
gay, bisexual(LGB) persons have sought to fare Through such legitimate
rights for their claims to a general sexual Freedom. (Farhat,2020)

Stigmatization, social exclusion and consequent banishment from the society

makes transgender’s life even tougher; isolating, pushing and forcing them
into inappropriate conducts/habits like selling sex. This study investigates the
association of social exclusion/victimization with high-risk behaviors among
transgender community of Rawalpindi and Islamabad (Pakistan).Through a
cross-sectional study design, a sample of 189 transgender community living
in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad was selected using snowball
sampling technique. A validated close ended questionnaire was used to
estimate the high-risk behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression was used to
explore the competing outcomes associated with suicidal risk, selling sex and
substance abuse.Majority study participants 77.8% experienced physical

22
attacks with institutional discrimination even higher (91.5%). Commercial
sex work and drug abuse was reported in 39.2% and 37.6% respectively. The
prevalence of suicide ideation was high (38.6%) however, suicide attempted
rate was less (18.5%). In the multivariate logistic regression, compared to
those with no risk, being physically attacked increased the odds of both
attempting (OR=2.18) and contemplating suicide and selling sex (OR=4.10).
Nevertheless, the relative impact of institutional victimization on suicidal
behavior was higher among those who were targeted on the basis of their
gender identity or expression (AOR = 6.20, CI = 1.58-24.29, p=0.009).The
transgender community is socially excluded by the Pakistani society where
they experience high levels of physical abuse and face discriminatory
behavior in daily life. Such attitudes make them vulnerable for risky
behaviors; forcing them to become commercial sex workers, begging, drugs
use and even suicidal ideation.(Shah,2018)

Among all the efforts of ShoaibMansoorBol is one of the most

Popularmovie(meaning Speak or “words”) is a 2011 -Urdu language social
Pakistani film Written, directed and produced by ShoaibMansoor(list
Pakistani film,2011).The most Important concerns of the movie is gender
appearance of a person which isexposed in the Film Bol.
Bol signifies current Pakistani social life and proclaims breakdown in the
communal Order.Boldemonstratesadomestic household suffering severe
financial distresses which becomes reason for loss of familial honor. The
father,s financial difficulties with a Transgendered child results in a tragic
consequences of Saifi .
The Express Tribune BLOG defines the concerns of Gender issues like
this:ShoaibMansoor‟sBol is brutally honest. Based on the stories of Hakeem
Sahib‟s Sunni-Syed household of seven daughters, the movie
adeptly .Focuses on gender issues at large, dwelling on tensions between
fossilized Cultural practices and new ones, speaking well to tensions
underlying many South Asian households. Problems including rape and
domestic violence, and attitudes towards transgendered people, featured in
Mansoor‟s Kaleidoscopic film perfectly harmoniously.(Anjum,2021)

23
Boldiscusses the difficulties of third gender people in a very heart- touching
manner. In Pakistani society. Third gender community is dealt in a very
wretched way. The director Of a film is a man of authority for all he wishes
to show and in what way;andherehe did a Greatwork. The protagonist Saifi is
treatedbrutally and harshly as afamily member by hakim Sahib because he is
a third genderedkid, who undergoes no acceptance and no welcome as a
Family member. The News NetworkExpressTribunecomments: “It shows the
plight of transgendered individuals in our society, their Pigeonholed roles,
and their societal constraints. It mocks hypocrisy of the Male authority figure,
hell-bent on using scripture, circumstance and blatant Fabrications to
reinforce his authority and maintain his iron-grip on those Around him. It
shows the systematic and systemic bias our society at large Has against
female education.”(Anjum,2021)

Transgender people are registered as third gender on CNIC. Government is unable to provide
any aid and support to them. In case of bullying, harassment, and criminal victimization they do
not get any assistance from governmental or non-governmental organizations. There is a dire
need of transgender protection, care, education, and identity legislature around the globe.
Government of Pakistan should take initiative to register transgender right after their birth. It is
dejected to see how Pakistani government fails to implement laws regarding this marginalized
section of the community. In India today central and state Governments recognized the real
problems of transgender community and are taking more initiatives to improve their social,
educational, economic and political conditions. (Islam, 2020, p. 7).

In 2009, then chief justice of Pakistan declared their rights as a third gender to have a national
identity card, free education, health facilities, and employment. Unfortunately, this had been
done just in papers. Moreover, in 2013 at the discretion of the Supreme Court of Pakistan,
federal and provincial governments are entitled to provide transgender equal fundamental rights
in education, health, and employment. Transgender are identity less and deprived till the date.
Legal systems often entrench this marginalization, feed inequality, and perpetuate violence
against trans people. Supreme Court of Pakistan passed a bill to provide basic rights to
transgender but it has not been fully implemented so far.(Islam, 2020).

2.2 Interviews with Transgender in different regions of Pakistan

Many transgender have very agonizing story of getting CNIC. A senior member of Focus
Transgender Organization Bahawalpur - said I got my CNIC 15 years ago with many hurdles.
I even had to cut my hair and dress up like a man to get a photo for CNIC because my gender

24
was written as a male. There are numerous similar stories of barriers in getting CNIC. It was
distressful and despondent to know the answers of the second group of questions which was
about their political awareness, interests and experiences. Just two out of ten interviewees have
ever cast a vote in their life. One respondent said that she went to cast a vote in the female
polling booth but they asked her to go in male polling booth. She went there and people made
fun of her and called her with different names. Then she requested a senior election officer who
sent her to the female polling booth and she cast her vote. She hopelessly said that was her first
and last time. She will never ever go to cast a vote again. Other respondents said they do not
have any interest in politics, they do not follow or like any political party, they do not even want
to cast vote because they are not accepted in society as normal human beings and even few
started laughing when they were asked about contesting elections because it is far-fetched dream
for them. A senior member of Focus Transgender organization Bahawalpur said she would not
miss a chance to represent her deprived community in national assembly. If she will ever be
given a chance, she will contest for elections.(Akhtar,2021)
Similar responses received in the third group of questions which was about their political rights.
Sadly, they were not aware of their political rights. They were not even familiar with politics and
the election process. They even did not know about political parties, interviewers had to explain
to two people what does mean by political party. They believe that they have nothing to do with
politics. They have their own issues which need immediate attention. Like when an interviewee
was asked about her political rights, she said that
“hmra sub say bara masla sound system kahai, police sound
system nahilaganaydetitouhmra function nahihotaachay say.
Bus ye maslahalkardain. Functions chaltayrehain roti
paktirehayhmain or kuchnahichahye”.
“Instead of mentioning political rights she said our biggest
issue is about sound systems. Police do not allow us a sound
system that’s why we cannot dance properly. We just demand
that we dance to earn bread and butter so we can survive”.
Another respondent said that we do not know about our political rights and we do not need that.
We need our basic survival rights like we are dependent on dancing for livelihood. Police put us
in jail upon dancing at functions but they do not say anything to host. They are equally
responsible. Woefully, instead of protecting their rights, police restrict their limited sources of
income. Other stakeholders need to be made responsible as well. There is a need for rule of law.
(Akhtar,2021).
Furthermore, for the third set of questions, many interviewees said lack of education is their
important and urgent problem which needs immediate attention. This education should be both
sided. They said people should be educated at school level that LGBT are normal human beings
like them. They deserve to be treated equally with respect. If people will be educated then they
will be welcoming towards us. On the other side, there is a dire need of educational facilities for
transgender community. Separate schools should be made for us. Education of transgender needs
to be promoted. If we will be educated, we will do jobs rather than dancing and prostitution and
ultimately people will start respecting us. (Akhtar,2021)

25
One participant asked How long will we keep dancing? We also deserve to work at the office
with dignity. We are no less intelligent than other people. One respondent postulated that if we
will be respected and treated equally our all rights will be granted to us ultimately. Our rights are
not provided because we are not even fully recognized and owned by society. A senior member
of focus transgender organization Bahawalpur asserted that if I will win an election and go to
assembly, I will work for the education of transgender because the solution of our problems is in
education. Only education can increase our political participation and make us a winning
candidate because without education we do not have any voice and we will not be heard forever.
She further demanded that we just do not require spoken promises. We need constitutional rights
in education and politics. Lawmakers should pass any act to make education free and
compulsory for us as well as make this part of the syllabus to teach people about our rights.
Moreover, three interviewees questioned how we can contest against other people? Is this
realistic to run for office against any renowned and respected politician, feudal lord or
industrialist. No one will vote for us and we will never win. Our political rights can only be
provided if we run for a specific seat and our own people vote for us.
To conclude, first of all, governments and departments like police make sure to protect their
basic human rights. There should be rule of law. Instead of limiting their resources, they need to
be facilitated.(Akhtar,2021)

Imran Alam an Assistant Professor, University Law College, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Punjab,Pakistan
conducted interviews with Transgender to highlight their issues.

1- P1 was 26 years old and she lives with her Guru. Her family forced her to leave home at the
age of 9 because her family do not accept transgender child to live with them.
2. P2 has a Bachelor degree in arts and has not found a job because everyone in the society want
to have sex with her but do not like to work with her.
3- P3 wasa 22 years old and she works as a sex worker and she does notknow about her family.
She earn almost 20,000 in one month. Her earnings is not belongs to her but Guru’s money.
4- P4 was a 60 years old and she is involved in various diseases like backbonepain and arthritis.
She told that transgender were the most privileged andtrustworthy courier of emperors in ancient
times but know they are hate ablecreatures at Lahore. It has been a difficult journey. As state
functions have changed,so has their role in society has been changed. Once, they do respectable
work. Theywere always part of the royal palaces and did not suffer in any way. But know
theyare beggars, dancers and prostitutes.

5- P5 was a 45 years old and she is Guru of the small group that consist of 08 transgender
people. She narrates that transgender people have become untouchables in Pakistan. Society does
not accept them at any level. They are sociallydeprived because no one allows them to
participate in the affairs of daily life. Peopleused to make fun of them on the streets. People think

26
that they are sex machines andnot humans. They often faces sarcastic remarks from the public.
Even educatedpeople used to call them with derogatory names third world (TESRI Duniya)
andmake fun. No one wants to give them a social place. This is a painful situation forthem.

6-P6 was a 48 years old and she used to work as a dance teacher in differentareas of the Lahore.
She is a NCA Graduate and almost 5 transgender students in herapartment to learn dance. The
question was asked that there is the confusion in thesociety about transgender either they are by
choice or by birth. She replied that No one wants to become transgenderby choice we are all by
birth. It is a painful struggle and life threating to transformedmale body to female body. It is a
constant struggle. Majority of the transgender at Lahore are involved in this struggle but they
don’t have facilities. Many are died andmany have severe diseases. Transgender birth is the
beginning to welcome of sorrows, loneliness and constant struggle. The transgender community
in Pakistanhas suffered tremendously against legal, institutional and social prejudices.
(Alam,2019).

A student of business administration at The Islamia University of Bahawalpur made a short

documentary on transgenders to participate in a documentary competition held at my
university. She collected the required information, she visited their homes and were shocked at
what she discovered and shared .After having spoken to Sahiba, Sapna, and a few other
transgenders . She portrayed a clearer picture about this particular gender and the appalling
exploitation of their rights. Sahiba, the president of the transgender society in Bahawalpur,
started the conversation;

“God created us, as He created all. We are born of a father and a mother just like everyone
else, yet we are different. Our families may be ashamed of us but we know He loves us and
that is why we don’t feel disgusted with ourselves. They don’t call us normal but we feel
more normal than normal people because we don’t let anything bring us down. What
doesn’t kill us just makes us stronger.” .(Amna,2013)
The parents of a particular transgender person don’t leave them, they still feel like social outcasts
and join the transgender community by their own will. They feel easy amongst people of their
own kind. This way, they are able to stand as a family and survive.

Sahiba further said,“I have faded memories of my mother hiding me in her arms when my
father would beat me for wearing my sister’s make-up and dressing up like her. I don’t
have that warm, safe haven to hide me from this cruel world anymore. Sometimes I wish I
could lie down in her loving embrace and just die.” .(Amna,2013)
Many organisations working for the underprivileged. Unfortunately, we don’t see the word
‘underprivileged’ being associated with the lives of transgenders. There are only a few
organisations - made by the themselves - that are striving for their rights.

27
“We dance for the happiness of people. We never dance at funerals. We are not involved in
terrorism, neither do we kill people. We just dance and that’s not a crime. There are some
transgenders who have long beards, they wear male clothes and are respected by society,
but when they meet us they say ‘Aur, saheli, terakiyahaalhai?’ (How are you, girl-
friend?) They talk to us like they belong here.”.(Amna,2013)
Sexual orientation does not necessarily align with a person’s appearance.Transgenders in
Pakistan are still deprived of basic human rights. If a girl gets raped, people unleash hell upon
the culprit, but who cares when a transgender loses his dignity?
“When someone from our community dies, maulvisahibaan refuse to offer our namaaz-e-
janaza because they think its haraam!” says Sahiba.
When she talked to Sahiba about the issuance of identity cards for transgenders, she said,“The
Chief Justice allotted us the right to self -identification. Before that, we were non-existent
for this so called humanistic society. Most of us still don’t have IDs. It’s like red tape for
us.” .(Amna,2013)

The Chief Justice of Pakistan gave them the right of employment, but will this really help when
they are not educated in the first place?
since there is more money in prostitution, they have no other better option than to resort to it.One
of the transgenders ask questions from society that;
“When a druggie, a thief, or a rapist is accepted as part of his family and the society, why
can’t people accept us? You accept your brother if he climbs out of a filthy drain, but you
never accept us. Are we that bad? We may have the wrong body but our soul comes as
pure as any other of God’s beloved creations. You can’t give us love, but what about some
respect?”.(Amna,2013)
Transgenders are helpless and the only source of earning a livelihood is prostitution or
begging. The truth is that we don’t leave them with a choice. If we were to give them a form of
social acceptance and the entitlement to a good education and work, they could turn out to be
productive members of our society, instead of being a dead weight on our economy which is
already hanging by a thread.
.(Amna,2013)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The difference between research and others methods of findings answers to

your questios – researchis one way . It is a method , we work under a

28
framework , and different methods for realizability and validity and make it
unbaised and objective .
Research methodology will deal with Research Design, Corpus
Selection,Data Collection and Determination in the end this chapter will shed
light on the Theoretical Framework of the Study.

3.1 Research Design

The research design of the study is a qualitative study of Alienation and
marginalization of transgenders .In this study researcher will identify specific
events related to the characters of Bubbly and Gurru from the perspective of
harsh treatment, misbehave and non understanding behavior of parents and
society in The TV serial parizaad by a Pakistani writer Hashim Nadeem.

3.2 Corpus Selection

This study only details with those abstracts of the serial where the characters
of Bubbly and Gurru faces suffering and trauma in the TV serial parizaad.

3.3 Data Collection

The researcher has collected data through many resources like Articles,
journals, YouTube, Books etc. For further details about Drama and main
issues, the researcher different interviews and surveys.

3.4Theoratically Frame work

Gender socialization is the process of educating and instructing males and
females as to the norms, behaviors, values, and beliefs of group membership
as men or women.

29
‘ The lifelong process of learning the socially approved attitudes, behaviors,
norms, and values associated with a sex, typically through early education,
family, media, and peers’.(SOCIALOGY DICTIONARY).
In Western contexts, gender socialization operates as a binary, or a concept
that is exclusively comprised of two parts. In other words, individuals are
socialized into conceiving of their gender as either masculine (male) or
feminine (female). Identities are therefore normatively constructed along this
single parameter. However, some individuals do not feel that they fall into
the gender binary and they choose to question or challenge the male-
masculine / female-feminine binary.
For example, individuals that identify as transgender feel that their gender
identity does not match their biological sex. Individuals that identify as
genderqueer challenge classifications of masculine and feminine, and may
identify as somewhere other than male and female, in between male and
female, a combination of male and female, or a third (or forth, or fifth, etc.)
gender altogether.
These identities demonstrate the fluidity of gender, which is so frequently
thought to be biological and immutable. Gender fluidity also shows how
gender norms are learned and either accepted or rejected by the socialized
individual.Social constructivists propose that there is no inherent truth to
gender; it is constructed by social expectations and gender performance.
Judith Butler is one of the most prominent social theorists currently working
on issues pertaining to the social construction of gender. Butler is a trained
philosopher and has oriented her work towards feminism and queer theory.
Butler’s most known work is Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion
of Identity, published in 1991, which argues for gender performativity. This
means that gender is not an essential category. The repetitious performances
of “male” and “female” in accordance with social norms reifies the
categories, creating the appearance of a naturalized and essential binary.
Gender is never a stable descriptor of an individual, but an individual is
always “doing” gender, performing or deviating from the socially accepted
performance of gender stereotypes. Doing gender is not just about acting in a
particular way. It is about embodying and believing certain gender norms and
engaging in practices that map on to those norms. These performances

30
normalize the essentialism of gender categories. In other words, by doing
gender, we reinforce the notion that there are only two mutually exclusive
categories of gender.
The internalized belief that men and women are essentially different is what
makes men and women behave in ways that appear essentially different.
Gender is maintained as a category through socially constructed displays of
gender.

Doing gender is fundamentally a social relationship. One does gender in

order to be perceived by others in a particular way, either as male, female, or
as troubling those categories. Certainly, gender is internalized and acquires
significance for the individual; some individuals want to feel feminine or
masculine.
Social constructionists might argue that because categories are only formed
within a social context, even the affect of gender is in some ways a social
relation. Moreover, we hold ourselves and each other for our presentation of
gender, or how we “measure up.” We are aware that others evaluate and
characterize our behavior on the parameter of gender.
Social constructionists would say that gender is interactional rather
thanindividual—it is developed through social interactions. Gender is also
said to be omnirelevan, meaning that people are always judging our behavior
to be either male or female.

CHAPTER 4

4.1An outline story of the TV serial parizaad.
The story revolves around a dark-skinned college student, Parizaad.

Guru, Parizaad reconciles Bubly with her parents. After many discussion
love and emotional conversation, Bubbly parents become ready to
accept Bubbly as she want to be and Bubbly also loves her parents

socialize in a good manner because of society and parents

32
treatment .After returning to Karanchi, Parizaad takes all the blame and

both Layla and her lover. Before being caught, Behroze commits suicide
and gives all his wealth to Parizaad as a reward for his loyality and

hearing his poetry and touching his face, she recognizes him and both of
them confess their love for each other and the story ends with Parizaad
finally getting his love.anMarth Stewart makes a guest appearance in
Episode 17 where she helps catch a tycoon.

4.2 Character analysis of Bubbly:

Saboor Aly is one of those performers who earned fame and respect by
doing persistent hard work and unique acting skills. The talented actor

33
started her career in 2011 with the role of Rimsha in ‘Mehmoodabad Ki
Malkain’. Since then, she has appeared in countless drama serials.
Saboor Aly earn fame by her loyality and justice with character , which
she performe .
saboor Aly is ruling the audience’s heart as Bubbly in the popular
drama serial ‘Parizaad’.

Saboor’s character as Bubbly is unique and different from her previous

work.
Episode 4 of ‘Parizaad’ introduces the character of Bubbly. She is a
young and talented tom-boyish girl, who is famous by the name of
Bubbly Badmash and by birth she received the name of “Saima” as a
girl. She is the only child of her parents, they wanted a son but on the
birth of Bubbly, they raised her like a boy.

Young Bubbly does not possess even a single attribute of femininity.

Her parents are worried about her future anytime. They want her to get
married like every other girl. However, Bubbly is unable to face the
reality. Her character is stranded in the rigid dichotomy between her
inner self and society.

Parizaad is friends with Bubbly’s tenant, Nasaaz. In order to get rid of a

marriage proposal, Bubbly becomes friends with Parizaad. On the other
hand, Nasaaz suggests Parizaad to marry Bubbly in order to receive
some money as Parizaad is in trouble and need some money to help his
sister. At last, the chasm between her inner self and the reality of life
compelled her to leave the home in order to escape the marriage with
Parizaad.

34
Saboor has beautifully projected the role of a young bold tom-boy girl
who is not ready to bow before the tradition of society. Her character is
widely receiving critical plaudits.Viewers as well as Drama critics, are
praising the young actress for her spontaneous acting, body language
and even for her dresseing styles.

Saboor Aly spoke to Galaxy Lollywood about her experience in

performing the character of Bubbly. When asked about
her first thoughts about Bubbly’s character, she said: “I found this
character very unique and different from all of my previous characters,
also this character is very disparate from all the present-time onscreen
characters”.(Aliya, 2021).

By critically analyzing the character of Bubbly , we would come to

know that how this character is marginalize and who are responsible for
her critical life style and how it become the e root of many crimes and
evil ,just because of her “Mental disease” know as Gender dysphoria.
And how she suffer , because of mistreatment and lack of knowledge of
parents and society about this disease. As the researcher had previously
define and explain “ Gender Dysphoria” It describes a sense of unease
regarding the mismatch between assigned sex and gender identity .

4.3 Guru character:

The character of ‘Guru’, a transgender, was introduced in 13th Episode of
the drama in a train scene by saving Bubbly a tomboy from decoits . The
character in no time got the public’s attention due to his acting like a real
life transgender . His acting seem like , no one except AsadMumtaz

35
Malik “Guru” was best option for this role to highlight the feeling and
emotions of transgender and their sufferings .

The writer of this Drama Hashim Nadeem recently shared some

enthralling details about Guru’s character that the role of Guru is taken
from his real life .

Hasim Nadeem wrote, “‘GURU’ Pareezad shows the 13th episode with
an entry of Guru.., A transgender with a heart of Gold but having an eye
of the Tiger for his enemies. Guru is a real-life character..whom I met
during my service posting tenure while I was serving as an Assistant
Commissioner”.(Hina,2021)

“Parizaad” drama reflects different aspects of our society by different

characters especially by “Guru” character who reflects all community of
transgender and their issues in real life . And the lack of acceptance of
cost in different role by society .

In the drama serial, we see that Guru is transgender, which instantly got
the public’s attention. By deep analysis, the researcher get many data
and keenly observe the issues and sufferings of Transgender by Guru
and his companions character . Even transgender roles are almost never
given to transgender actors. Additionally, their representation is limited
to their role in entertainment , dancing, rather than focusing on
individual stories.

Guru and his companions living at Guru Adda reveals about their
sufferings and hurdles in society , which is the results of complete
rejection of transgender by society and parents . Society is unable to
accept transgender and parents consider them a curse and feel ashamed

36
by having a transgender child , which is not their will but the will and
test by God .

Hashim Nadeem shows the limited life of transgender by the character

of Guru and his companions , which is limited to dancing ,bagging and
people use them as a tool instead of living their own life as they want .
They live a life of dependency as they are not human and having not
any wish , doing everything for food and shelters which is snatched by
parents and society by their behavior and ill – treatment .

The first word , Guru listen after birth is “Hijra” as like other
Transgender. From birth to death, they are identify by their gender as a
disable human , not having feelings and emotions nor person wishes and
interest .

In Episode 13 “Guru” share his heart inner feelings to Parizaad by

saying “This world is a very cruel place, It doesn’t leave even the dead
alone. When I was born…the first word my ear got to hear was “Hijra”.
After that my parents threw me in front of a Guru like myself and left”

Transgender :a person whose gender identity is opposite the sex the

person had or was identified as having at birth .

37
4.4 Scene Analysis :

Several scenes in Parizaad illustrate the marginalization and allienation

of transgender and gender dysphoric and violation of their rights in our
society .Most people might focus on the scenes in which the central
character “Parizaad” enjoy his luxurious life after a facing a lot of
hurdles in his. However the researcher found many scenes that
highlighted the major and root cause issues of many problems and social
indifference in society. The researcher found some scenes, which easily
shows the issue of gender dysphoria , lack of knowledge about Gender
dysphoria and marginalization of transgender , violation of their rights
which leads to unbalanced society and results in different social evils.

This first scene in which Bubbly appears in episode four of drama ,

clearly shows her physical attributes like body language like boys and
her mental level by calling herself Bubbly badmash and her interest and
how she see herself and what she want to be.
In her first scene viwers can also judge her character in which she wears
boys Shalwarkameez and having handkerchief around her wrest and

38
talking in a way like badmash. In her first appearance she play a Desi
game of hitting specific stones by ball with her neighbors teenager boys .
While playing this game with boys friends, the central character
Parizaad enter in her house for meeting her friend Nasaaz ,who is on top
floor of Bubbly house, Bubble through the ball which hit parizaad on his
face .
Bubbly mother (Shaista) call as Ustani g, rescue Parizaad and scolde
Bubbly but Bubbly laugh while listening Parizaad name but her mother
introduce Bubbly by saying , “forgive her my son ,she is my daughter
Bubbly”. Bubbly reply to her mother “I am not a daughter, I am a son
and it’snot Bubbly, My name’s Bubbly Badmash , (Bubbly the rascal).
In her very first scene active viewers of drama can easily get a clue to
Bubbly character but for complete understanding, the Researcher deeply
analyzed all scenes related to Bubbly and everything related to her
including her friends , parents and her neighbor.

39
The second scene is just after meeting of Parizaad with his friend Nasaaz
at the time of coming outside of Bubbly house .Bubbly call Parizaad in
an angry way that what you told to my mother but he deal in a good
manner by saying I just told to your mother that Bubbly is both son and
daughter .The way he deal Bubbly , she get impressed by his behaviour
and attitude toward Bubbly.
While giving warning to Parizaat in angry mood , Parizaad call her “ I
get miss g” after listening her but she again shout and warn him that “
what is this Miss g, don,t you get it, My name is Bubbly Badmash.”
Parizaad deal her without any laughing or missbeahve call her “ok
Bubbly Badmash g”.
Bubbly feel extremely good and make him friend. This secen is a short
scene of a few minutes but this scene gives a way that how society can
easily deal with these types of people having the issue of gender
dysphoria, without hurting them.
The treatment of society makes them good and bad because of their
allienation they become too much sensetive. Mostly people constantly
reacting with anger without understanding their issue as like they are
responsible for their Gender issue and disease.
Hashim Nadeem shows the way by his character Parizaad that how
society can easily deal with these types of issues by good treatment.
Parizaad first first understand her psyche including her interest and what
she want to be and then he listen her first and then explain what is goof
and what is bad for her and then Bubbly easily agree with him in any
matter. This way he build her trust on him and Bubbly makes him a
good friend and discussing and helping him in any matter.
Beside this Bubbly parents is not understanding the issue and not
listening her especially her father but it is because of lack of
understanding her mental disease called as Gender Dysphoria.

40
3.Bubbly is a character that can be interpreted in many different ways,
first she stand for the expectations that society hold for women. Girls are
expected to behave in certain way. After a specific age , parents think
and discuss about their daughter marriage either it is suitable time for
their daughter or not. In mostly cases , girls are suffering from many
health issues and their parents are not friendly, even not ask from girls
that you are ready for your marriage or not . As like bubbly who are
suffering from a mental disease known as Gender Dysphoria , which is
not less than a plague , where soul and body can’t cooperate. In this
situation Bubbly parents are thinking about her marriage but not about
her health . It was the time when Bubbly needs a psychiatrist checkup
and treatment but parents and society imposed their civilization on
Bubbly.
Bubbly is a character , who face more and more hardship, on one side
she is suffering from mental disease ,which change her feeling from girl

41
to boy and on other side parents and society want her to be a girl and
accept and perform in a specific manners as a girl.
Bubbly parents invited a family for her engagement but she is not in a
position to marry because of her Mental disease she can’t act as a girl
but parents force her to sit in front of boys side family and keep silence.
Parizaad, one of her good friend also talk to her but Bubbly replies “tell
me am I something to be viewed is it circus, they will come and see me
is it retail shop when someone comes, see and chooses ? After listening
Bubbly , Parizaad talks in her favor and tell her I am with you you just
have to sit not to marry in one day . He release her tension first and then
make her agree with her parents descion to sit and ready like a girl
Infront of them.
The scene is clearly showing the feelings of Bubbly while she is going to
be ready , she feels ackward while wearing scarf or Dopatta. She can’tfl
face herself in mirror while wearing the scarf and see herself as a girl.
After this when Bubbly unwantedly move towards her girl side and
follow her body not soul, then society norms, culture and traditions
makes her more painful. The boy side family demand more and more
dowery car, hight class furniture, etc even tell them to sell your home
and arrange money for you daughter. By seeing this Bubbly react and
refused from engagement. And when she speak courageously they call
her that are you boy ? Because of her boldness. Bubbly also get that
boys only can speak for their rights and in other scene she told to
Parizaad that Bubbly can’tdo this, Bubbly will change these
traditions .while Parizaad said these are traditions, girls has to act like
this , Bubbly replies that’s why I don’t want to be a girl.

42
4* In this scene it is clear that Bubbly,s father named as Shabir badly
slapped Bubbly because of her reaction Infront of matchmakers. That
why you open your mouth Infront of them. Bubbly,s father said to her
that I don’twat to see you again Infront of me before you change your
outlook.
After this Shaista, her mother talk to Bubbly and asking for her health,
she replies “his hand is too heavy”. Parents harsh treatment play a key
role to make their mind to escape from their home and even life .
Because if parents is not able to understand their daughter then they feel
complete dis-sitesfiction and make unwillingly they leave their home
like Bubbly.

43
In all the drama only one time her mother, “Shaista” talks about
Bubbly,s treatment may be she needs a psychiatrist for her changed
behavior.
But her father refuse to consult psychetrist and said do it at home , she
will be better at home. People consuder her half crazy if we will go to
consult a psychiatrist, people will consider her full crazy. This feat of
people in every matter is the reason of all issues related to Bubbly and
people like Bubbly. That what people will think that we have an
abnormal child. This narrow mindedness and the reaction of society by
seeing this type of issue is the root cause of many disorders in person,
family and society.
Treatment can help people who have gender dysphoria explore their
gender identity and find the gender role that feels comfortable for them,
easing distress. There are some treatment options include changes in
gender expression and role, hormone therapy, surgery, and behavioral
therapy.

44
Medical treatment of gender dysphoria might include:
 Hormone therapy, such as feminizing hormone therapy or
masculinizing hormone therapy
 Surgery, such as feminizing surgery or masculinizing surgery to
change the chest, external genitalia, internal genitalia, facial
features and body contour.
Some people find relief and use hormone therapy to seek maximum
feminization or masculinization. Others might find relief from gender
dysphoria by using hormones to minimize secondary sex characteristics,
such as breasts and facial hair.

Treatments are based on your goals and an evaluation of the risks and
benefits of medication use. Treatments may also be based on the
presence of any other situation and consideration of your social and
economic problems . Many people also find that surgery is necessary to
get relief from their gender dysphoria.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health

provides the following criteria for hormonal and surgical treatment of
gender dysphoria:
 Persistent, well-documented gender dysphoria.
 Capacity to make a fully informed decision and consent to
treatment.
 Legal age in a person’s country or, if younger, following the
standard of care for children and adolescents.
 If significant medical or mental concerns are present, they should
be reasonably well controlled.

Additional criteria apply to some surgical procedures.

45
A pre-treatment medical evaluation is done by a doctor with
experience and expertise in transgender care before hormonal and
surgical treatment of gender dysphoria. This can help rule out or address
medical conditions that might affect these treatments This evaluation
may include:
 A personal and family medical history,
 A physical exam,Lab tests,
 Assessment of the need for age- and sex-appropriate screenings
 Identification and management of tobacco use and drug and
alcohol misuse
 Testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, along
with treatment, if necessary
 Assessment of wish for fertility preservation and referral as needed
for sperm, egg, embryo or ovarian tissue cryopreservation
 Documentation of history of potentially harmful treatment
approaches, such as unprescribed hormone use, industrial-strength
silicone injections or self-surgeries.
 There are other treatment for patients of gender dysphoria
according to patient conditions.(Mayostaff,2022)

Other one is behavioral health treatment:This treatment goal is to

improve your psychological well-being, quality of life and self-
fulfillment. Behavioral therapy isn’t specific to alter your gender
identity. Instead, therapy can help you explore gender concerns and find
ways to lessen gender dysphoria.
The goal of behavioral health treatment is to help you feel comfortable
with how you show and express your gender identity, enabling
successful relationships, education and work. Therapy can also address
any other mental health concerns.
Therapy might include individual, couples, family and group counseling
to help you:

46
 Explore and integrate your gender identity
 Accept yourself
 Address the mental and emotional impacts of the stress that results
from experiencing prejudice and discrimination because of your
gender identity (minority stress)
 Build a support network
 Develop a plan to address social and legal issues related to your
transition and coming out to loved ones, friends, colleagues and
other close contacts
 Become comfortable expressing your gender identity
 Explore healthy sexuality in the context of gender transition
 Make decisions about your medical treatment options
 Increase your well-being and quality of life
 Therapy might be helpful during many stages of your life.
(Mayostaff,2022)

A behavioral health evaluation may not be required before receiving

hormonal and surgical treatment of gender dysphoria, but it can play an
important role when making decisions about treatment options. This
evaluation might assess:

Gender identity and dysphoria

Impact of gender identity in work, school, home and social
environments, including issues related to discrimination, abuse and
minority stress
 Mood or other mental health concerns
 Risk-taking behaviors and self-harm
 Substance misuse
 Sexual health concerns

47
 support from family, friends and peers — a protective factor
against developing depression, suicidal thoughts, suicide attempts,
anxiety or high-risk behaviors
 Goals, risks and expectations of treatment and trajectory of care.
There are some other ways to ease gender dysphoria might include use
of:
 Peer support groups.
 Voice and communication therapy to develop vocal characteristics
matching your experienced or expressed gender
 Hair removal or transplantation
 Genital tucking
 Breast binding
 Breast padding
 Packing
 Aesthetic services, such as makeup application or wardrobe
consultation
 Legal services, such as advanced directives, living wills or legal
documentation
 Social and community services to deal with workplace issues,
minority stress or parenting issues. (Mayostaff,2022)
The need of hours is that how to identify this issue at home even inrural
areas , parents can understand their children and individual can feel and
share with their parents when they feel certain symptoms in their
body ,which are following:

 A difference between gender identity and secondary sex

characteristics, such as breast size, voice and facial hair. In young
adolescents, a difference between gender identity and anticipated
secondary sex characteristics.
 A strong desire to be rid of these genitals or secondary sex
characteristics, or a desire to prevent the development of secondary
sex characteristics.

48
 A strong desire to have the genitals and secondary sex
characteristics of another gender.
 A strong desire to be or to be treated as another gender.
 A strong belief of having the typical feelings and reactions of
another gender(Mayostaff,2022)

After knowing the symptoms , one must go to consult psychetrist,

doctors for the treatment and suggestions. The researcher had discussed
all the treatment which is helpful for patients of gender dysphoria .These
all treatments can help and solve this mental disease , which is know as
gender dysphoria. The core issue is parents feel insult and patients feel
shy to discuss this issue with any other which leads to unbalanced
relations.Further these patients on their extreme become complete
transgender and join different groups of Guru,s and work for them ,some
commit suicide because of their torture and criticism by society. There
life become a plague for them so they kill all their desires and end their
life because of lack of understanding of parents, criticism of society and
treatment by society as they are alien.

49
Parents feels insult at the time of treatment because of Society and their
criticism that what people will say about us but not aware that people
will comment even then when their daughter or son having this issue
will escape themselves from this life. In this seen the neighbors of
Bubbly badly criticize her parents and Bubbly when she leave home and
went to krachi to meet her friend.
Parents need to be friendly with their childrens , It is helpful to
understand them and their problems but mostly in lower and middle
class famiys parents do care of society more as compared to their family
that what people will comment about us and it will effect of respect in
society.

50
Bubbly left her home while her father slapped her and after saying that I
don’t want to see your face. She left her house to meet her friend and not
found her but found a person who can respect her feelings and well
aware about her mental issue because he also have the same feelings.

Bubbly left for Krachi and travel by train even then she face more and
more hardship. While traveling in train , a group of rascals attack on
her ,when they see her a lonely girl, but Bubbly fight for her dignity and
a character introduced named Guru a Bold, powerful and having heart of
gold . Guru fight against rascal and safe Bubbly dignity from rascals.

51
After this Guru told his story to Bubbly that “ this world is world is very
cruel place,it will eat you up, you saw what happened in a train last
night, you can do anything but it will always view you as a weak
woman.
Bubble replies that’s why I run away from home, I doesn’t want to live
as a woman. Bubbly see the life of girl is dependent and girls are
marginalized in this society. Guru said I am myself incomplete. That is
the reason Guru understand her anxiety. That’swhy people like Bubbly
and Guru always run away for their peace of mind and body and just get
this by the people who also stuffer from these issue of gender.

52
Guru is a transgender and show all the real life issues of transgender.
Writer of this Drama, Hashim Nadeem told in an interview that Guru is
a real life character and I met with a person like Guru in my service
time.
Guru also explain his life sufferings to Parizaad that’s “this world is a
very cruel place, it doesn’t leave even the dead alone”. Guru share his
story with Parizaad that when he was born, the first word his ear got was
“Hijrah”a transgender.

53
After that his parents threw him Infront of a Guru like him and society
rejected him. And whenever a man looked at me, it was with evil
intentions. “I would live each day and die each day. And I would live
keep on asking my Lord the same one question over and over
again. If you had to make me into an incomplete man then why give
me the feelings of complete man”.

Guru and his companions live in a place know as “Adaa” , where Guru
and people like Guru lives with peace. After looking lock on Bubbly
friends house, Guru makes her his son and gives her name of
“Dilawar”.
In this scene, It is clear Bubbly is happily living with Guru and Parizaad
also met him co accidentally. Guru teach them the way to live as strong
man.

54
At Guru Adda, all transgenders learn martial art and cook and press for
their selves and living without social Criticism. Beside this their life is
limited to Adda and people like Guru are use by business tycoon for
their self interest. Guru also work for sairh and after this he also work
for Parizaad to deal rascals and always be the part of all blood shed
games.
People like Guru and Parizaad in our society are also suffering the same
issues. The violation of their rights and miss behave by family, friends,
and society lead them to difficulties of life . It create social indifference
and if society in unbalanced a country can never grow but create
problems and trouble in the way of success by their own.
Government can play a key role to rootout this social problems , which
further lead to character assassination. Government make different
policy for their right but fail to implement. Because of this such people
go toward crime for their basic needs fulfilment and involve in sex for

55
money which increase Aids ratio in country and youth also become more
toward evil. Why their earning is just dependent in their dancing if
government is going to facilitate them. Is there any issue to make
separate school, colleges and universities for them and special cota in
jobs for transgender. Is there any hospital, which is easy to approach for
them and their pockets allowe them to get rid of their disease , the
answer will be no.
This type of people also have abilities and can utilize for the success of
country, policy makers should make the rules according to them not like
others . Is there any awareness compaign in rural areas , where people
are not aware about such issue, even never listen about gender dysphoria
or it’ treatment. People like Bubbly will suffer until society can not
change their attitude towards such people and people will not change
their attitude until government and private medical officers , psychetrist
don’t spread awareness about such issues. It is the their responsibility to
spread awareness about Gender dysphoria and visit in local areas when
people are even far from social media. And government should strictly
address every institution to facilitate them like police department which
can reduce crime ratio.

56
It is clear in this scene that Bubbly, father Shabir, is replying to
Parizaad that how a normal clerk can I understand such problems.
Guru replies in his emotional conversation that “people like us …suffer
their whole life because of the constant battle going on between their
bodies and souls, the body says one thing and the soul another, and
this entire fight..our soul ends up suffering.”

57
In this scene Bubbly parents are at Guru Adda to meet their daughter,
who is now Dilawar, her mother and father are weaping while meet after
a long time with their daughter. Parizaad play key role to arrange their
meeting secretly. Her mother is insisting her to leave Adda and come
with me to yoor own home but she replies I am Dilawar, Bubbly is no
more.
But after this , her mother emotionally talk and Bubbly also become
emotional and her parents is also understanding their mistakes that what
they have done with Bubbly and her emotions by their wish.

58
Shaisataaccept that I am responsible for this I have treated you as a boy
because it was my will to have a son and when you were born ,I decided
that I will give you my love as you are my son and all are my mistakes.
“All is my fault my yearring for a son and the advent of a
daughter,is where this entire thing started, had I pampered and
raised you like a daughter instead of son, this confusion, you’re
facing today would never have been born, it’smy fault.”
This highlight the issue in our society and psychetrist also identify this
as a part of reason that in many families when a daughter took birth they
treat them as a son , give her dress and shoes of boys and allow her to
play with boys which makes her feeling diverse and their bosy and soul
confusion create. Like Bubbly thousands of people do the same and face
this issue because of lack of understanding about its results. And a the
life of an innocent change into plague.

59
In this finel scene of Bubbly and her parents reconciliation at Guru
Adda is the end of Bubbly story in Drama. Bubbly agree to her parents
that I am Bubbly or Dilawar but you are my parents and she agree to go
with them to her own home . Guru also become emotional and allow her
to go with her real parents .

Hashim Nadeem beautifully conveyed his message to society and

highlighted the major issue in society, which are the source of many
crimes and other issues in society, results in lack of social harmony.

60
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION
After analyzing the data through understanding the drama, the researcher
finds the answers of the research questions and gives suitable solutions
after the deeper understanding of all issues related to GURU and his
companions and BUBBLY with respect to society. The objectives of
study in this research are to understand, how “Parizaad” drama reflects
the alienation and marginalization of transgender and gender dysphoric
people in our Pakistani society. This study elaborates as to how
“GURU” represents the portrait of transgender community and their
sufferings. This study also explores the awareness provided by drama on
the part of people like “BUBBLY” have mental issue like gender
dysphoria in order to highlight the suffering of other people like
“BUBBLY”.
The researcher concludes that “PARIZAAD” drama is the true
representation of our society with reference to Transgender community
and their treatment by society. The researcher highlighted the issues
based on gender in our society and how society limits the life of such
people like transgender and gender dysphoric people as they are
consider alien not human and how society limits their opportunities for a
meaningful life.
In the drama “PARIZAAD” people like “BUBBLY” and “GURU”
sufferings shows the real life sufferings of people like them and other
issues related to their life like they have no chance for education or lack
of separate schools, no special jobs, no fulfilment of desires, no freedom
of speech in reality, lack warmth and live a life of depression which
mostly results in succide.
Society including parents, siblings, freids and other peer groups have put
them into a small box with their limitited life of: dance and survive, beg
and survive, go for illegal activities and crimes but still there is other

61
option to commit suicide because of lack of opportunities and basic
right.
“PARIZAAD” drama truly reflects marginalize community of our
society like “GURU and his COMPANIONS” and other issues of
gender dysphoria, which is very important to understand which results in
transgender on its extreme level. The life of “BUBBLY” shows two
sides of one face of her life as BUBBLY and Other as DILAWAR. This
transformation of gender is because of the disease known as gender
dysphoria. Gender dysphoria treatment is possible at basic level but
people like BUBBLY,S parents ignore this issue which reach to extreme
level because of “ what people will say about us”. Their escape from
social Criticism lead their daughter toward more darker side of life
where she has to suffer alone and it is also proved that one can’t not stop
social Criticism, like when BUBBLY left her home even then her
parents face social Criticism but they were afraid of people in case of
psychetrist consultation which was the solution of BUBBLY problems
which later become the problem of her parents and even society.
The study aims to give awareness about gender dysphoria and rile of
parents in it’s development and also motivate transgenders people like
GURU and his COMPANIONS into developing the strength which lies
within them to fight for their happiness and rights just like the strength
developevin GURU, who even support BUBBLY and make her
powerful to face the society not to escape by commitingsuccide.
The character of PARIZAAD represents the beautiful side of our
Pakistani society that people like PARIZAAD who are educated can
help and develop a better environment in society by understanding the
problems of such people and understand their psyche and do friendship
with such people and lesson their problems and help them for solution
which beautify their life and they consider themselves as human just like
normal male and female. It is society who put them into darkness as well
as in happy and healthy life by their good treatment and cooperation.

62
“PARIZAAD” drama describe the hidden and major issues in our
society which is not discussed before in any drama like in this realistic
manner. The drama highlights such issues which badly effects society
and destroy the peace and progress of our Society. These issues increase
the disturbance in society by gender based treatment and lack of
opportunities like education for them, facilities of health issue which are
easy to approach for them, jobs for their basic needs fulfilment and jobs
in every institution for them inorder to understand and solve their issues
by them etc. All these issues are because of lack of socialization of these
people.

5.2 Findings.

The Researcher after analyzing the tv serial drama “PARIZAAD”

from the preview of gender socialization, come to know that the
drama “PARIZAAD” depicts the other face of our Pakistani society
and the reasons behind the lack of harmony in society. The drama is
in corporate with the issues of alienation and marginalization of
transgender and gender dysphoric people in society and it,simpects on
social relations. The drama reflects the good and bad picture of our
society which is more on the side of bad part with reference harsh
treatment of social relationships based on gender due to lack of
awareness and education about major issues related to children’s in
case of parents and child relationship. The researcher also highlights
the behavior of society including parents, siblings, and other peers
group as a reason among most of other reasons .This behavior also
includes the taste of parents and their choices at the time of birth for
their baby as in case of BUBBLY when she born as a girl her parents
treat her as a boy and didn’t allow her in the company of boys ans a
girl but when she grow young then her parents intereste change from

63
boy to girl to enjoy the marriage of her daughter. The researcher also
finds the lack of awareness in rural areas about Gender issue like
gender dysphoria which is a mental disease and it’s symptoms and
also the fear of people that they will criticize when they consult for
any medicql treatment. The researcher highlighted all the issues and
gives the proper solutions after reading many articles, watching
videos of different psychetrist and therapist and identified issues
which parents commit at home and how it can be deal by parents and
other people of society by cooperation and passion for Human service
which is the real purpose of life most liked by Allah.

5.3 RECOMMENDATIONS

I think the government should take the required steps to give these
citizens of Pakistan, regardless of their sexual orientation, equal rights.
Make separate schools and colleges for transgender people where they
can get proper education and learn skills, other than dancing, that can be
used as a source of income and dignity for them.

With that, there should be a chapter on transgenders in the syllabus of

elementary schools that teaches the children of tomorrow the value of
tolerance, gives them a sense of acceptability and respect for the third
gender.
Government must focus the problems of transgender, which make their
life a plague. Transgenders are humans so they must treat aa human not
alien. State should provude them specific opportunities in every field in
order to solve their issues.By giving them equal opportunities in every
filed ,they can easily understand their own problems and their solutions.
Government must provide them opportunities in political field so they

64
can listen and solve their issues at higher level like provide them seats
in parliament and Senate.
There participation in every institution of country will make it easy to
deal their problems. Education and then jobs opportunities are the main
solutions of their problems and all other solutions are linked with both of
them , by applying this method more and more benefits can be gained by
government.
In many regions Gender Dysphoria disease is not a familiar issue, people
in rural areas even don’t know what is this issues and how it effect the
life of an individual and then family. So government medical related
institution can visit these areas and can spread awareness about this issue
and it’s symptoms and treatmen.
YouTube and different sites are using by doctors and psychiatrists, they
can spread awareness about this issue through social media and free
camping in rural areas can help more and more to solve this issue.
Only if we start right away will they have their rights afforded to them in
the future. We need to work fast, all of us so that we can make sure that
the blood of these people does not stain our hands forever.
