skills #2 they have decided to answer different successful strategies
problems involving different operations. that maintain learning
Judy tries to answer this expression: 40 environments that
– (2 x 16) ÷ 22 – 2. Kim answers this motivate learners to
equation: 4 x 8 ÷ 2 + 12 – 8. work productively by
Can you figure out the correct answers assuming responsibility
in these two equations? for their own
learning
Expressions like 4 x 8 ÷ 2 + 12 – 8 can
be solved by following MDAS KRA 2 Objective 8
rule. MDAS stands for Multiplication,
Division, Addition, and Subtraction. Maintain learning
environments that
First, do multiplication and division nurture and inspire
operations as they appear from learners to participate,
left to right, and do addition and cooperate and
subtraction operations from left to right. collaborate in continued
learning**
Kim should multiply 4 and 8 then divide
the product by 2. Then add
12 to the quotient and subtract 8 from it.
So, the answer is 20.
Exponent and parenthesis are involve in
Judy’s problem. GEMDAS
rule can be used to solve this problem.
GEMDAS means Grouping symbols,
Exponents, Multiplication, Division,
Addition and Subtraction. Perform the
operations inside the parenthesis first or
the number with exponent, whichever
comes first from left to right.
To solve Judy’s problem which is 40 –
(2 x 16) ÷ 22 – 2, multiply 2 by
16 first then simplify 22 which is 4.
Divide the product by 4. Subtract 8
from 40, which makes 32. Then subtract
2 from 32 which makes 30. So, Judy’s
answer must be 30.
According to the rule, Joey’s solution is
correct. He divided 45 by 3
first because division comes first before
multiplication. Then, he multiplied
the quotient by 3 before he added 10
and 11.
