2. Analysis ride.

In our world today, communicating with others has been made very accessible and
advanced. However, such development has also caused us humans to sometimes
take for granted the value of effective communication.

INDICATOR 3: Use effective verbal and non-verbal classroom strategies to

support learner understanding, participation engagement and achievement

Based from the activity that we had earlier and from your personal experience,
when there is some confusion during the communication process, what do you
think is the best way to understand the person you’re talking to?

Yes! We ask questions to clarify.

Students, the activity that we had a while ago, actually leads us to our main
discussion today which is the lesson on “Evaluating Information Through Sometimes, I ask questions to confirm
something from what the other person said.
Questions, Accuracy and Effectiveness”.

As we start our lesson let’s begin with defining the word, “Question” as it shall play
a very vital role in the whole course of our lesson.

What’s the first thing that comes into your mind when you hear the word
“Question”.

Yes! That’s good.

According to vocabulary.com, a question is a sentence designed to get information

from someone. It can also mean doubt about the truth of something. It is also a
sentence of inquiry that asks for a reply.

Ma’am, I think of the word answer or

Example of questions are: response.

Are you hungry?

Would you like to have burger or pasta?

Why did such thing happen?

INDICATOR 3: Use effective verbal and non-verbal classroom strategies to

support learner understanding, participation engagement and achievement

As we proceed, let us ask ourselves, in our everyday lives, why do you think do we
need to ask questions?

Why?

Why?

Why?

As far as we know, the most important questions don’t seem to have ready
answers. But sometimes because of uncertainty, doubtfulness, and clarification of
a certain thing, you read, listen, and watch questions come in. This is in search of
a deeper understanding of the text you read or video clips you watch.

There are actually 4 Main Types of Questions in English

First, we have the General or Yes/No Question. These are questions that can be
answered with a simple “yes” or “no”.

Example: Are they ready for the trip? Did you enjoy the fireworks?

This question can be answered with a yes or no.

Can you think right now of a question that can be answered with a yes or no?

Very good!

The next type of question is the Special or Wh-Question.

This is a very familiar type of question as it used in our everyday lives.

Special or Wh-Questions use a certain word at the beginning of the sentence to

ask a specific question. The Wh question words like who, what, where, when, why,
how, how many, etc., are used to begin the question. We use special questions to Are you not feeling well?
get specific information. This indicates that the answer will be more detailed. Did you receive my gift?

Example:

How did you meet her?

When did you come here?

These questions require specific answers.

If I would like to ask about the date of the visit of the President in our city, how do
you think should I say it?

That is right!

Now let me add something more!

In our previous lesson, we learned that to ask a question about something (what),
time (when), position (where), someone (who), explanations (why) we should use
this pattern:

Wh- word + helping verb + subject + verb.

For Example: “Who are you waiting for?” Or “When does the English lesson start?”
When will the President visit our city?

Now let us have the Choice Question type.

Here in this type of question, you are offered with choices or options. It is usually
made up of two parts, which are connected by the conjunction or.

Example: Does she like ice cream or cakes?

She likes ice cream.

The last type of question is the Tag Question.

Just like the Choice Question type, the Tag Question also consists of two parts.
The first part is a positive statement, and the second part is negative or vice-versa.

Take note of this:

The first part of the sentence defines the expected answer. If the statement is
positive, a positive answer is expected; if the statement is negative, a negative
answer is expected.

Example: Zaide isn’t in France, is she? – No, she isn’t.

In this example, the first part is a negative statement, “Zaide isn’t in France”. Since
it is a negative statement, the second part must be on a positive form, which in our
example we have the words “is she?”

Another example: Our mom will come home soon, won’t she? – Yes, she will.

And that’s the fourth one. Now let us recall the 4 types of questions. We have the
General or Yes/No Questions, next is the Special or WH-Questions, next is the
Choice type of questions and the last one is the tag question.
Do you have any questions with what we have discussed?

Let us now proceed.

INDICATOR 3: Use effective verbal and non-verbal classroom strategies to

support learner understanding, participation engagement and achievement

The art of asking questions is very important, especially if we’ve been in a situation
or discussion where there are some elements of confusion. So, this is the time that
clarification by asking questions comes out to better understand what is going on.

Clarifications are essentials in our day-to-day understanding during

communication. It is a form of reflection that seeks to exclude ambiguity,
confusion, or misunderstanding.

One of the most important tools to help you better understand the information and
to eliminate confusion especially during a discussion is to seek clarification by
asking questions. It is a tool used by active listeners to ensure understanding and
obtain essential information, simple inquiries of fact, and require brief or concise
answers.
None Ma’am.

Did you know that there are also what we call as Types of Clarifying Questions?
There are actually 2.

First we have the Open clarifying questions. It helps the speaker find direction in
what is confusing or lacking in the information they've provided. When, where,
how, or why questions are openly clarifying questions.

Examples:

a. When did you graduate in elementary?

b. Why did you decide to fill out your drawing with a crayon?

c. How did you get on the rooftop without a ladder?

If we have open clarifying questions, we also have what we call as the Closed
clarifying questions.

Closed Clarifying Questions ask for a yes or no response. They serve to

acquire accuracy in a direct aspect of discussions or presentations.

Examples:
a. Did you eat the last piece of candy?

b. Were you involved in the car accident?

c. Have you ever gone on a blind date?

INDICATOR 6: Maintain learning environments that nurture and inspire learners

to participate, cooperate and collaborate in continued learning

Here are the guidelines that we should observe for clarifying:

1. Admit if you are not sure about what the speaker means.

2. Ask to repeat the part you did not understand

3. Utter what the speaker has said as you understand it and check whether this is
what they really said.

4. Use open and non-directive questions-if possible.

5. Ask if you have got it right and be prepared to be corrected.

Did you get it?

In your own opinion, how does asking questions to clarify something contribute to
achieving effective communication?

Very well-said.

You now know how to evaluate information through asking questions. Let us
proceed with the next part of our lesson.

INDICATOR 1: Create steps and procedures to practice living the truth with
respect (EsP10PI-IVd-14.4)

In your ESP subject, you were taught about the value of truth and how to live by it
at all cost and in our current world today, one of the most discussed issue that
affects our society is the spread of what we call as “Fake News”. It affects us
because destroys the value of truth. It refers to the widespread of wrong
information to which the public believes. To combat fake news, it is necessary for
us to evaluate the information we encounter every day. And aside from asking
questions, we can actually evaluate information through accuracy and
effectiveness. But how do we do that?

Let us define first what we mean when we say accuracy and effectiveness.

According to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, accuracy is the

ability to do something in an exact way without making a mistake, or it could be the
quality of being correct or true.

On the other hand, when we say effective or effectiveness, it means successful, Ma’am, I think when we are confused and we
and working in a way that was intended. opt to clarify, it prevents us from
misunderstanding the message delivered to
us.
Effectiveness is the capability of producing the desired result or the ability to
produce the desired output. When something is deemed effective, it means it has
an intended or expected outcome or produces a deep, vivid impression.

As you examine each source, it is important to evaluate the source to determine

the quality of the information provided within it. Common evaluation criteria
include: INDICATOR 7: Apply a range of successful strategies that maintain
