Before my undergraduate studies, I usually thought that the end result of studying library science

was to become a librarian. During my undergraduate studies I came to realize that library science
is much more than becoming a librarian, the discipline trains individuals to be effective
information architects, information officers, knowledge management specialists etc. to mention
but a few.
In the complex and interconnected world where information management determines how people
and organizations work with information, there is the need to know and understand the
practicalities of how to handle it, as well as taking into account the ethical considerations of
managing what is at times sensitive and private information. Information is the life blood of any
business or organization. It is at the heart of an organization’s growth, which is why so much effort
and resources are needed to ensure that information is properly managed and preserved. And of
course with access to vast amounts of information comes great responsibility. Information is
shared both voluntarily and involuntary with individuals and organizations every day. Individuals
and organizations are under increasing pressure to handle information responsibly and ethically.
This is why I would like to pursue a master’s degree in Information Management and Preservation
at University of Glasgow.

I earned my Bachelors’ degree in Library and Information Science at the University of Ilorin in
Nigeria where I graduated with a Second Class (Upper Division) Honours. At this school, I
acquired thorough and comprehensive training in Librarianship, Information Management,
Knowledge Management, Archival Studies, Information Preservation to mention a few. While
observing my internship at an academic library, I saw first-hand all what librarianship entailed as
I was opportune to assist during accreditation of some specific courses in the institution and I am
glad I was able to be part of that activity because I learnt how to properly source information
materials on particular fields of study. The Brainstorming Session was especially helpful because
I learnt a lot about different fields of study and I also learnt that librarians are seemingly “Jack of
all trades”. This came to play when each person was given a subject for research and presentations
were made during the brainstorming session. It was a beautiful experience and it further assured
me that this is the right profession I want.
Because of my interest in information and librarianship and my desire to focus my career in this
field as well as the continuous need for the preservation of information, I have decided to build
upon my undergraduate education by studying in your master’s program in Information
Management and Preservation.

If given the opportunity to join your Information Management program, I will be able to utilize
my extensive background in Librarianship, while learning additional skills and techniques that will
be greatly beneficial to my future career development. I hope to use my skills and background to
learn how to effectively help individuals and organizations manage and preserve information
ethically. Individuals and organizations are heavily reliant on information, and this is integral to
the successful management of an organization. I am eager to explore this field in the presence of
the esteemed professors at your university. After researching your program, I am well aware of the
quality of education that is available, and this has especially motivated me to pursue a slightly
altered educational path, as the challenges and opportunities available at your university will allow
my potential to grow unfettered. I am particularly appealed because the program is accredited by
CILIP and Archives and Records Association.
After I graduate from your program, I will be uniquely prepared to face the challenges proposed
by contemporary information and records management issues. My short term goal is to seek
employment in the UK that could serve as a practical supplement to my education. In the long-
term, I plan to return to my native country, where the fast-developing economy requires
experienced management professionals. The role of information management will be of increased
importance in the coming years, and I plan to use my librarianship and management background
to assist individuals and organizations pay special attention to the management of digital records
and electronic resources and how to manage it effectively alongside analogue resources. Your
master’s program in Information Management and Preservation will allow me to achieve these
goals, and I therefore greatly appreciate your consideration of my application.
