Strategy and Tips: Building

The Town Hall is the main building in Clash of Clans that allows players to unlock new buildings and upgrades. It contains 20% of each resource type and players should aim to protect it at all costs, as losing it allows opponents to gain stars more easily. Higher level Town Halls undergo significant visual changes and have additional defensive structures like the Giga Tesla and Giga Inferno to defend itself.

Summary

 The Town Hall is the main and most important building in the game.
The Town Hall lets you unlock new buildings the more you upgrade it.
Strategy and Tips
 Protection of the Town Hall is critical for achieving player's
objectives.
 The Town Hall is the equivalent of the Builder Hall in the Builder Base
or the Goblin Hall in the Single Player Campaign.
 Since the change that players no longer gain a shield if the opponent
destroyed their Town Hall, placing it outside a farming base serves no
purpose anymore, other than to rapidly drop trophies. Players should
aim to protect their Town Hall at all costs, as it contains 20% of all 3
different resources.
 If one is designing bases to protect their trophies or war bases, they
should aim to protect their Town Hall at all costs. If an attacker
destroys your Town Hall, they will immediately receive one star.
However, if they are unable to destroy it, they will get a maximum of
one star.
 This concept is, however, thrown away when you are
trying to design an anti-3 star base, in which the Town
Hall is considered just to be a high hitpoint building and is
used to protect key structures to prevent the attacker
from claiming a third star (hence the name). At higher
Town Hall levels (especially level 9 and above), players
can, instead of protecting their Town Hall, use it as a high
hitpoint damage sponge — similar to Storages — as part of
a strategy to prevent 3-star attacks from Dragons and
other high-level armies, at the cost of making 2-star
attacks much easier. Anti-3 star bases are used for war
more commonly than they are as normal bases because
getting the full 3 stars in war is more important.
 Town Halls have the highest hitpoints of any relative level building,
with the exception of Walls, which means they take a long time to
destroy. Placing your Town Hall within the range of your most
powerful defenses can give them the most shots to destroy enemy
troops.
 It is suggested that you upgrade everything you possibly can
(e.g. Troops, Buildings, etc.) before upgrading your Town Hall to the
next level. Prematurely upgrading (also known as rushing) your Town
Hall is risky, and it will take a long time to upgrade your
buildings/troops to match your Town Hall's level. Raiding with low-
level troops will also become increasingly difficult.
 If maximizing your builder time is important to you, it is
inefficient to wait until all of your building upgrades are
finished before beginning to upgrade the Town Hall, as all
but one of your builders will be idle for the duration of
your Town Hall upgrade. In order to keep all of your
builders occupied (but ensure they are all available when
the Town Hall upgrade finishes), you should plan for the
Town Hall upgrade to finish just as the remaining builders
are finishing their final projects. For example, if you are
currently at Town Hall level 9 and have five builders, you
should upgrade your Town Hall (which takes 6 days) when
the total remaining upgrading time of other buildings
approaches 24 days.
 Of note is that at higher Town Hall levels (8 or more),
upgrades in the Laboratory will take significantly longer
than building upgrades. If Laboratory upgrades are the
only things remaining, one can consider upgrading the
Town Hall early to prevent builder time being wasted (and
avoid having to hold excess resources in storages for too
long), while selecting only the Laboratory upgrades for
units that the player uses most often.
 Do not place your Town Hall in a corner surrounded by Walls, as
troops can still be placed next to the Town Hall in the darker grass.
 You must place all available buildings at a Town Hall level before
being allowed to upgrade the Town Hall. There are four exceptions to
this rule:
 The first is the Clan Castle; you do not have to rebuild it
before being allowed to upgrade to the next Town Hall
level. In other words, you can rebuild the Clan Castle
whenever you want, as long as you have enough
resources for it.
 The second exception to this rule is the Builder's Huts; you
do not need to buy all five builders before being allowed to
upgrade to the next Town Hall level (because the Builder's
Huts cost Gems as opposed to other buildings, requiring
them would unfairly hinder progression for players who do
not buy Gems).
 A third exception exists for upgrading to Town Hall 11 or
above; players do not need to build the Master Builder's
Hut (which is only available at Town Hall 10 and above due
to the requirements in building it) in order to upgrade the
Town Hall to those levels.
 A fourth exception is when the player is upgrading to
Town Hall 5 or above; players do not need to rebuild the
boat (which can only be rebuilt at Town Hall 4 and above)
in order to move on to the next Town Hall level.
 Town Halls 13 and 14 require the weapon on the previous Town Hall
level to be upgraded to the maximum level (in addition to the
standard requirement of placing all new buildings) before they can be
upgraded.
Giga Tesla
Main article: Town Hall/Giga Tesla
 Unlocked at Town Hall 12, the Giga Tesla is an addition to the Town
Hall that allows it to defend itself when attacked.
 The Giga Tesla will deploy once damaged by a troop or spell, or when
the village has reached 51% destruction. It is not deployed by a troop
moving into its range.
 Troops that target defenses (Giants, Balloons, etc.) will not prioritize
the Town Hall 12 as a target until the Giga Tesla is activated.
Giga Inferno
Main article: Town Hall/Giga Inferno (TH13)
Main article: Town Hall/Giga Inferno (TH14)
 Unlocked at Town Hall 13, the Giga Inferno is a direct upgrade that
replaces the Giga Tesla while adding a slowdown effect upon
destruction at level 3+ and having more potential to be upgraded.
Everything else, like activation and defense targeting troops' behavior
with the weapon, is exactly the same as the Giga Tesla.
 A level 1 Giga Inferno at Town Hall 13 has the same statistics as a level
5 Giga Tesla, the only difference is the attack speed.
 The Giga Inferno continues into Town Hall 14 but with a different
appearance, bomb and statistics.
Upgrade Differences
 The Town Hall undergoes significant visual changes at all levels.
 At level 1, the Town Hall resembles a small house that has
a crooked orange roof with a small stone chimney. The
windows, entrance, walls, and poles are all made out of
wood.
 At level 2, the Town Hall gets the roof tiled and raised
slightly with orange and has the walls "straightened out"
and made of stone. The bottom of the corner poles and
window walls are now made of stone.
 At level 3, another layer with a flat tiled roof gets added to
the top.
 At level 4, a third plain non-tiled layer and a fourth tiled
layer gets added to the top. The chimney shifts to the
front left.
 At level 5, a stone framing gets added to the entrance and
windows. The rest of the corner poles and window walls
are finished with stone.
 At level 6, small golden pillars appear on the sides of the
Town Hall with vines that partially cover the walls along
with the pillars.
 At level 7, a small battlement with a wooden floor gets
added to the back left corner of the roof. Underneath the
battlements are what appear to be arrow slits.
 At level 8, the battlement grows to the size of the whole
roof, and the golden pillars connect with the front wall and
turn to stone. The chimney also disappears, and since
there is no chimney, there is no more smoke coming from
the Town Hall.
 At level 9, the theme of the Town Hall changes, making it
the first level to have its own theme. The entire color of
the Town Hall changes to dark gray with a red flag on the
top. An entrance into the Town Hall from the roof appears,
similar to the one on a level 5 Clan Castle. A small
watchtower appears on the top left, and there is a new
extended red entryway leading to the Town Hall, flanked
with two gold chains. A skull is also added as a door
design. Both front corners of the Town Hall have carved
level 8 Walls.
 At level 10, the color of the Town Hall changes to a deep
crimson red. On top of the Town Hall is a metal grate. A
second watchtower is added beside the first, and molten
lava spills from two openings near the top of the tower
down to a trough at the base of the Town Hall. The red-
carpet entryway receives a gold trim.
 At level 11, the Town Hall's base changes to rough stone.
The entrance becomes golden and a gate consisting of
three huge spikes supported by a winch system is added
above it. The roof becomes white and gains a large, lava-
filled hole. Two small battlements with red flooring appear
on the front of the roof, and a single watchtower remains
on the back. The interior of the building appears to be
brightly lit, presumably from the lava on the roof. A red
flag is added back to a corner of the Town Hall, this time
on the upper corner.
 At level 12, the Town Hall becomes blue. Town Hall 12 is
the first Town Hall with multiple visual upgrades with each
level gaining new features depending on the level of the
Giga Tesla inside.
 When the Town Hall is newly upgraded to level
12 (with a level 1 Giga Tesla), it appears as a
blue building with a metallic base. The roof of
the Town Hall has a faint gold line running
across. On the sides are gold wires connecting
to an electric coil above the door. Two large
pieces of gold above the electric coil are placed
as decorations. There is a big battery on the
side with a number in Roman numerals
signifying the level of the Giga Tesla (which will
increase accordingly in later upgrades), with
black wires going into the top of the Town Hall.
The watchtower and battlements on the top
are gone and the roof is now once again closed
but gains a trapdoor where the Giga Tesla
hides underneath. Additionally, the flag at the
corner is now blue.
 At level 13 the Town Hall gets a really bright turquoise and
blue color scheme. Unlike normal inferno towers, the Giga
Inferno is turquoise and blue like the Town Hall. The base
of the Town Hall depends on the Giga Inferno's level.
 When the Town Hall is newly upgraded to level
13 (with a level 1 Giga Inferno), it appears as a
turquoise building with a black base. The top is
turquoise and has a wooden pyramid shape in
the center cut out into four corners. Each
piece is attached to the rest of the roof via two
black attachments. Those connect onto a
purple square outline with an actual square at
each corner. At the very edge are icy blue
arrow-shaped slabs that connect black corner-
pieces to each of them. The flag is removed.
The two gold pieces are reversed in order and
now directly above the entrance. All wires are
gone and the Roman numerals that signify the
Giga Inferno level are now higher up and
glowing. The corner pillars are now snow-
colored and have a black bottom as well as two
lavender-colored half triangular prisms with
navy blue spikes. There are also smaller side
pillars with one prism spike piece.
 At level 14, the Town Hall’s theme completely changes
once again and is now a jungle theme resembling lost
jungle ruins, with an overgrown nature vibe to it. On top of
the Town Hall is a waterfall of green mossy covered water
with some lilypads. The top of the Town Hall also seems to
have a golden outlining surrounding the exquisite stone
details. At the front of the Town Hall, there are two
torches with an ominous green light.
 The Giga Inferno now seems to be completely
engulfed in lava.
Town Hall Boost
 When players upgrade to Town Hall 4 or higher, they receive
temporary boosts for a few days after the upgrade is complete. These
boosts are as follows:

 The boosts last for 3 to 5 days, depending on the player's new Town
Hall level:
 Upgrading to Town Hall 4-6 will give a boost of 3 days.
 Upgrading to Town Hall 7-9 will give a boost of 4 days.
 Upgrading to Town Hall 10-14 will give a boost of 5 days.
 If the Town Hall is upgraded again while a boost is active, the boost
will be extended by however long the boost would last. For instance,
upgrading to Town Hall 5 after 2 days at Town Hall 4 will carry over
the remaining day of boost to Town Hall 5 (for 4 days worth of boost
at Town Hall 5).
 The Power and Hero boosts also applies to the player's Builder Base
army, so units there will also be temporarily powered up.
Unlocks
 At each Town Hall level, new buildings are unlocked. The table below
shows the unlocked buildings and traps by Town Hall level. Where
"New" is written, one of that building or trap is unlocked unless
otherwise stated in brackets.
 Builder's Huts are not included in this table because they can be
purchased at any time.

History
 The levels 1-8 Town Halls were in the original release (date varies
depending on platform and country).
 The August 30, 2012 update reduced upgrade times for levels 2 and 3
Town Hall:
 Level 2: 10m -> 5m
 Level 3: 4h -> 3h
 The October 15, 2012 update made it so that players with lower Town
Hall levels now lose less resources when attacked by higher Town Hall
level players (2 level difference or more).
 The October 27, 2012 update gave the Town Hall an update:
 Added the level 9 Town Hall.
 Additionally, the Town Hall Level 8's upgrade cost was
increased from 1,500,000 gold to 2,000,000 gold.
 The same update also removed selling option due to it
being unnecessary and leading to abuse.

Selling option
 The November 19, 2012 update increased hit points at level 3-9:
 Level 3: 1700 -> 1850
 Level 4: 1800 -> 2100
 Level 5: 1900 -> 2400
 Level 6: 2000 -> 2800
 Level 7: 2200 -> 3200
 Level 8: 2500 -> 3700
 Level 9: 3000 -> 4200
 The May 23, 2013 update added the level 10 Town Hall, and decreased
upgrade cost of Town Hall level 9 from 4,000,000 gold to 3,000,000
gold.
 The November 6, 2013 update made it so that Town Hall loot
multiplier is now capped at 1.5, even against 3 Town Hall levels above
or higher.
 The December 5, 2013 update improved the looting for Town Hall:
 Maximum amount of loot available now increases based
on defender's Town Hall level.
 Percentage of loot available now decreases based on
defender's Town Hall level.
 Loot bonus when attacking opponents at higher Town Hall
levels has been removed.
 The April 9, 2014 update decreased Town Hall 2's upgrade time from 5
minutes to 1 minute.
 The July 3, 2014 update added an option to re-arm your traps easily
by tapping the Town Hall.
 Between November 24 and December 8 of 2014 and 2015, IOS users
were able to purchase red gems to contribute to AIDS research. When
they did, they received a red shield on their Town Hall.
 The April 30, 2015 update made it so that players are now more more
likely to find targets at or near their Town Hall level in multiplayer
matchmaking. The same update also decreased Town Hall level 1's
hitpoints from 1500 to 450, and most buildings unlocked at Town Hall
level 1 have their construction times decreased from 1 minute to 10
seconds. These changes have made the tutorial quicker to finish, as
the two Single Player Campaign levels in the tutorial have level 1
Town Halls and are quicker to destroy.
 The July 1, 2015 update increased hit points at level 7-10:
Level 7: 3200 -> 3300
 Level 8: 3700 -> 3900
 Level 9: 4200 -> 4600
 Level 10: 5000 -> 5500
 The December 10, 2015 update gave the Town Hall an update:
 Added the level 11 Town Hall.
 The Town Hall is now a resource building, with significantly
increased storage capacity, and can now be targeted
by Goblins.
 Additionally, the Town Hall Level 10's upgrade cost was
increased from 4,000,000 gold to 5,000,000 gold and its
time decreased from 14 days to 12 days.
 Removed the red flag from level 8 Town Hall.

Town Hall level 8 before the flag being removed

 Town Hall destruction no longer grants a Shield.
 Cost for finding a match reduced for Town Hall 10.
 Available loot percentage on Town Hall levels 6-10 has
been slightly increased.
 Villages one Town Hall level lower are now worth slightly
less loot (loot penalty for attacking one lower Town Hall is
now 80% instead of 90%).
 Multiplayer matchmaking is less likely to offer opponents
under your Town Hall level (only below Champion League)
 The December 19, 2015 optional update fixed a crash when trying to
tap the Town Hall while all elixir-recharged defenses are under
upgrade.
 The March 21, 2016 update made it so that Town Hall 10 and 11 players
are less likely to find each other in Multiplayer.
 The June 11, 2018 gave the Town Hall an update;
 Added the level 12 Town Hall.
 This update made it so that you would have to place all
buildings down before being able to upgrade to the next
Town Hall level. This feature largely prevents players from
severely rushing the Town Hall, and diminished the
viability of "engineering" strategies where players
upgraded offense while completely neglecting defenses
by not even placing them down.
 The June 26, 2018 update reduced times for level 3-11 Town Hall:
 Level 3: 3h -> 2h
 Level 4: 1d -> 16h
 Level 5: 2d -> 1d
 Level 6: 4d -> 2d
 Level 7: 6d -> 4d
 Level 8: 8d -> 5d
 Level 9: 10d -> 7d
 Level 10: 12d -> 8d
 Level 11: 14d -> 10d
 The April 2, 2019 update gave the Town Hall an update:
 Decreased times for Town Hall levels 4-10:
 Level 4: 16h -> 8h
 Level 5: 1d -> 12h
 Level 6: 2d -> 1d
 Level 7: 4d -> 2d
 Level 8: 5d -> 3d
 Level 9: 7d -> 4d
 Level 10: 8d -> 6d
 Moved Magic Items to the Town Hall. Previously, Magic
Items were placed in the Clan Castle.
 The June 18, 2019 update fixed a bug; Bats from Bat Spell that have
been cloned by Clone Spell will deal reduced damage to storages and
Town Hall just as their original counterparts do.
 The October 16, 2019 update made it so that a warning is visible in
the Single Player Campaign if the player's Town Hall level is not at a
recommended level for attacking the campaign level.
 The December 9, 2019 gave the Town Hall an update;
 Added the level 13 Town Hall.
 Brought back the Village preview in profile, accessed by
tapping the Town Hall in the profile.
 Increased the maximum amount of Elixir/Gold that can be
looted from TH12 player storages by 50,000 (to 500,000).
 Increased the maximum amount of Dark Elixir that can be
looted from TH12 player storages by 500 (to 5,000).
 Added ability for Clans to set a minimum Town Hall level
requirement to join (similar to Trophy requirements).
 The June 22, 2020 gave the Town Hall an update;
 Players can now further customize their Village with new
scenery! You can switch Scenery by tapping on your Town
Hall and then select the new “Change Scenery” button.
 Added the Town Hall boost; upgrading the Town Hall
triggers various boosts as described above.
 Loot Cart now accumulates loot over time for up to 90
days and its capacity for resources generated from
inactivity has been increased across Town Hall levels.
 Season Challenges’ Troop-based tasks have been
rebalanced in order to be able to be completed with Clan
Castle reinforcements from Town Hall 9 and up.
 The June optional update hid the “Change Scenery” bubble from
Town Hall if the Town Hall (or its weapon) is upgrading.
 The April 12, 2021 gave the Town Hall an update;
 Added the level 14 Town Hall.
 Decreased Loot in Legend League at Town Hall 12 and 13.
 Added Starter Challenges for Town Halls 2-6.
 Costs to find a match for Town Halls 1-8 (except TH6)
were reduced:
 Level 1: 10 -> 5
 Level 2: 50 -> 10
 Level 3: 75 -> 50
 Level 4: 110 -> 100
 Level 5: 170 -> 150
 Level 7: 380 -> 350
 Level 8: 580 -> 550
 Reduced the upgrade costs of level 7, 10 and 11 Town
Halls:
 Level 7: 1,200,000 -> 1,000,000
 Level 10: 5,000,000 -> 4,000,000
 Level 11: 7,000,000 -> 6,500,000
 Reduced upgrade times of level 3, 10 and 11 Town Halls:
 Level 3: 2h -> 1h
 Level 10: 6d -> 5d
 Level 11: 10d -> 8d
 Added achievement - Not So Easy This Time (Destroy
weaponized Town Halls in Multiplayer Battles)
 Practice Mode levels are now only available at the same
Town Hall as the level, not one earlier.
 Use popover to show what the new buildings/traps are in
TH/BH upgrade screen
 Take TH based scaling into account in practice and
challenge levels. For example, the Santa's Surprise in the
Epic Winter Challenge were scaled based on the player's
TH but now it's scaled based on the level's TH.
 Do not award Experience for destroying Town Halls in
Practice Mode, the Super Troop trial level or challenge
levels.
 The June 15, 2021 gave the Town Hall an update;
 Added new Season Challenge and Clan Games Task called
"Village Villain" - Destroy X Town Halls in Multiplayer
Battles.
 Let players with Town Hall 3 and 4 use the Quick Army
screen.
Show remaining Star Bonus boost time in Town Hall (from
the previous Town Hall upgrade) even if it's under
upgrade.
 Show boost effect for Builder's Huts and Town Hall when
they are under upgrade if the boost is active anyway.
 The December 9, 2021 gave the Town Hall an update;
 Reduced upgrade times of Town Halls from Level 4 to
Level 14:
 Level 4: 8h -> 3h
 Level 5: 12h -> 6h
 Level 6: 1d -> 12h
 Level 7: 2d -> 18h
 Level 8: 3d-> 1d
 Level 9: 4d -> 2d
 Level 10: 5d -> 3d
 Level 11: 8d -> 4d
 Level 12: 14d -> 6d
 Level 13: 18d -> 10d
 Level 14: 20d -> 14d
 Reduced the upgrade costs of Town Halls from Level 11 to
Level 13:
 Level 11: 6,500,000 -> 5,500,000
 Level 12: 9,500,000 -> 8,500,000
 Level 13: 12,000,000 -> 11,500,000
Trivia
 Town Hall is very often shortend by the term "TH" in the community.
 During the tutorial, if all other buildings are purchased before the
first Builder's Hut there will be no opportunity to buy additional
Builder's Huts, bringing the max number of buildings down to 10 for
Town Hall level 1.
 At Town Hall level 2, it is possible to purchase a package that exceeds
max resources in order to rebuild the Clan Castle.
 While every new Town Hall gains a new unique defensive building,
each new Town Hall from level 9 on also has a specific theme, which
is reflected in most buildings (and in some cases, troops) that gain
levels at that Town Hall level.
 Town Hall 9's theme is a medieval castle with a medieval
weapon, the X-Bow.
 Town Hall 10's theme is fiery, with the Inferno Tower using
flames to attack.
 Town Hall 11's theme is said to be mysterious and magical,
with ancient advanced technology like the Eagle
Artillery being developed.
 Town Hall 12's theme is electricity, with the Town Hall
itself being modified into a defense and acting like a
stronger Hidden Tesla, the Giga Tesla.
 Town Hall 13's theme is "Dark Elixir and Ice", and
introduces the Scattershot and the Town Hall's weapon is
changed to the Giga Inferno, which at higher levels causes
a freezing explosion when destroyed.
 Town Hall 14 is jungle-themed; the weaponized Builder's
Huts carry this theme by adopting a green color scheme.
The Giga Inferno is now modified to produce a poisonous
bomb instead.
 When a level 10 Town Hall was destroyed, the ruins would lie on a
grate on top of lava. This even holds in the Single Player Campaign:
since the Goblin Town Hall is smaller than the level 10 player Town
Hall, in stages with level 10 Goblin Town Halls, you can even see the
grate on top of lava without destroying the Goblin Town Hall.
 There is a glitch where you can appear to move away your Town Hall
from its usual location (this is only visual, and has no effect on
gameplay). If this is done with a Town Hall 10, the lava grate can be
seen in full.
 When a Town Hall upgrade finishes during a Clan War Preparation Day,
it still shows that the player is the previous town hall level on the war
map.
 If you zoom in on your Town Hall entrance, you will see the glow of a
fire inside the entrance, provided certain actions are being
proceeded.
 Several Defensive Buildings "face" away from the Town Hall when not
in battle. The manned defenses (e.g. Archer Tower) have their
occupants facing away from the Town Hall, while some of the
unmanned defenses (e.g. Cannon) automatically aim away from the
Town Hall.
 The Town Hall's entrance is small when compared
to Villagers and Builders.
 Before Town Hall level 11 was added, and before level 11 Walls were
redesigned, players speculated that the Town Hall 11 was going to be
blue and have electric theme because of the level 11 Walls theme.
 However, Town Hall 12 took the spot, along with the level
13 Walls.
 It currently takes 3 years 5 days 29 minutes and 30 seconds to max
out Town Hall 13 from when you begin with 5 builders if no gems
or Magic Items are used to boost builders. This does not factor in
obtaining resources for upgrades.
 Before the 2015 update, farming bases used to have their Town Hall
situated on the outside of the base without any protection so players
could easily get a 12-hour shield. With that, their resource collectors
would collect large amounts of loot without disruption.
 According to this video, Supercell thought of the Town Hall level 13 to
have wintry-theme because they felt it would be more appropriate
since the Town Hall level 13 was added in December.
 Before Town Hall level 13 was added, Supercell thought the Town Hall
13 could be jungled-theme for the Royal Champion to fit in the jungle
