Types of Lava

Volcanoes can be classified based on their shape, size, and ejected materials. The type of lava, whether basic or acidic, determines the shape of the volcano. Basic lava is low in silica, mobile, and flows over long distances in thin sheets. Acidic lava is high in silica, viscous, solidifies quickly, and does not flow far. The document provides information on types of volcanic cones and includes links to videos about Hawaiian volcanoes that eject basic lava and viscous/explosive eruptions.

Types of Lava
Volcanoes are classified according to their shape, their size and the nature of the
materials ejected. The type of lava may be basic or acidic, this determines the
shape of the volcano.
Basic lava is low in silica (40%), mobile and flows in a liquefied state, mostly in
thin sheets, for long distances.
Acidic lava is high in silica (65%) and is viscous and relatively immobile,
solidifying quickly at the surface.
