Thapar University Patiala BE-Civil Engg. Auxiliary Examination March, 2018

This document contains 5 questions from a civil engineering foundation exam. Question 1 contains 10 true/false statements about foundations to be justified. Question 2 involves calculating the safe distance for a footing near a retaining wall and determining earth pressures. Question 3 involves calculating the factor of safety against shear failure for a slope using the method of slices. Question 4 involves calculating the safe load for a column foundation and listing shortcomings of plate load tests. Question 5 defines tilt and shift in wells, explains well sinking process with a sketch, defines soil spring constants and their types, and lists field methods to determine constants.

Department of Civil Engineering
BE-Civil Engg. Auxiliary Examination UCE-602: FOUNDATION ENGG.
March, 2018
Time: 03 Hours; MM: 100 Name of Faculty: Rajesh Pathak
Note: 1.Attempt all questions.
2. Assume missing data(if any) suitably.
3. Use of Tables and charts are allowed.

Q.No.1 Check whether following statements are true or false. Justify your answer with
reason.
(a) Lowering of ground water table in sandy soil will results an increase in settlement.
(b) The upstream slope of an earth dam is critical during steady -seepage condition.
(c) Circular shape of the well is usually preferred.
(d) Driven piles are non-displacement piles.
(e) For determination of bearing capacity of clays drained shear strength is used.
(f) A fully compensated foundation resting on clay soil does not show the slightest
settlement.
(g) In sandy soil, inclination of slope can be more than the angle of shearing resistance
of soil.
(h) Basement walls have to be designed for passive earth pressure.
(i) In machine foundation for no resonance, frequency ratio should be between 0.5
and 1.5 .
(j) Given the choice on should prefer a cohesive soil for a backfill.
(10x2=20)
Q.No.2 A retaining wall 4.5m high with vertical back supports a backfill with horizontal
surface. The soil has (I) =360, and y=18kN/m3, 6=180. A footing running parallel to
retaining wall and carrying a load of 18kN/m is to be constructed. Determine the safe
distance of footing from the face of wall so that there is no increase in lateral pressure
on the wall due to load and also determine the magnitude of active earth pressure,
inclination of slip plane.
(20)
Q.No.3 An embankment is made of soil having c' = 9kN/m2, (IY=270, and y=19kN/m3. The
embankment is 9m height and has a slope of 300. The average pore pressure ratio may
be taken as 0.40 for condition of steady seepage. Using modified method of slices;
determine the factor of safety against shear failure for a slip circle passing through toe.
Locate the centre of rotation by Fellenius method. (Do only one trial).

(P.T.0)
Q.No.4 (a) An RCC column is subject to a vertical force of 900kN acting through its centre
line and a horizontal thrust of 120kN acting at 2.7m above G.L. The column is
supported by a square footing of 2.5mx2.5m size at a depth of 1.2m below G.L. The
soil has (1) =350, and y=18kN/m3
load. . Assuming a factor of safety of 3.0 determine the safe
(b) What are shortcomings of plate load test?
(12,8)

Q.No.5
(a) What do you mean by tilt and shift in well foundation? Explain in brief with neat
sketches the well sinking process for a bridge in a running river.
(b) What do you mean by soil spring constants? What are their types? List various
field methods of determination of these constants.
