Blessing an Altar: A Sacred Rite

The priest prays that God will bless the altar, which has been prepared to celebrate the mysteries of Christ's sacrifice on the cross and memorial at the Last Supper. The priest asks that the altar become the center of praise and thanksgiving, where Christ's sacrifice is offered and the bread and cup of unity are shared, and that it serve as a fountain of salvation so believers grow in holiness through Christ to offer spiritual sacrifices pleasing to God.

THE BLESSING OF AN ALTAR

Priest: Let us pray...

Blessed are you, O God, who accepted the Sacrifice of
your Christ offered on the altar of the Cross for the
redemption of the human race, and who with a father’s
love gather your people at the table of the Lord to
celebrate his memorial. Therefore look, O Lord, upon
this altar, which we have prepared for the celebration of
your mysteries. Let it be the center of our praise and
thanksgiving; let it be the altar where we offer in the
sacrifice of Christ; let it be the table where we break the
bread of life and drink the cup of unity; let it be the
fountain from which flows an unending stream of
salvation, so that, as we come to Christ, the living
stone, we may grow in him into a holy temple; and
offer on the altar of our heart the sacrifice of a life spent
in holiness, pleasing and acceptable to the praise of
your glory.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives with you and the Holy Spirit, One God,
forever and ever.

Response: Amen.
