Opening and Closing Verses

Creating a rhythm for your morning lessons will help you and your child to settle into homeschooling for
the day. Your child will feel held by the rhythm of your day and the routines within it. Each morning
lesson should begin and end with a verse or a song. Typically, the same opening and closing verse is said
for the entire year but can vary from grade to grade. Here are several examples for you to choose from.

Opening Verses
Welcome the Day All things to know and love
Morning has come, The earth is firm beneath my feet,
Night is away, The sun shines bright above.
Rise with the sun, And here I stand, So straight and strong,
And welcome the day. All things to know and love.

The Sun with Loving Light I Look into the World

(Typical Opening Verse for Grades 1-4) (Typical Opening Verse for Grades 5-8)
The Sun with loving light I look into the world
Makes bright for me each day, Wherein there shines the sun
The soul with spirit power Wherein there gleam the stars
Gives strength unto my limbs, Wherein there lie the stones
In sunlight shining clear The plants the live and grow
I do revere, oh world, The animals they feel and live
The strength of humankind, And humans to Spirit give
Which Thou so graciously A dwelling in the soul
Has planted in my soul,
That I with all my might, I look into the soul
May love to work and learn. That living, dwells in me
From Thee stream light and strength Life’s spirit lives and weaves
To Thee rise love and thanks. In light of sun and soul
In heights of worlds without
I place Myself Steadfastly into existence In depths of soul within
(Grade 7 & 8 verse) To thee oh Spirit of Earth
I place myself steadfastly into existence. In seeking, turn myself
With certainty I tread the path of life. That strength and grace and skill
Love I nurse in the core of my being. For learning and for work
Hope I lay in all my doing. In me may live and grow
Confidence I impress into my thinking.

The Golden Sun

(Grades 7 & 8 verse)
The golden sun so great and bright, warms the world with all its might.
It makes the dark earth green and fair, attends each thing with ceaseless care.
It shines on blossom, stone and tree, on bird and beast, on you and me.
Oh, may each deed throughout the day, may everything we do and say
Be bright and strong and true, oh, golden sun, like you.
Closing Verses
I am Going Out into the World Guide Your Way Home
I am going out into the world May the long-time sun
I will watch my ways Shine upon you,
I will act from a place of goodness All love surround you,
I will recognize the bad things And pure light within you,
Because my heart will tell me Guide your way home.

May Wisdom Shine Through Me Kind Words and Kind Deeds

May wisdom shine through me, Kind hearts are gardens,
May love glow within me, Kind thoughts are roots.
May strength permeate me, Kind words are blossoms,
That in me may arise Kind deeds are fruit.
A helper of humankind Take care of your garden,
A server of holy things, And keep out the weeds.
Selfless and true. Fill it with sunshine
Kinds words and kind deeds.

To Finish What I Start Brave and True I Will Be

Light be in my thought, Brave and true I will be
Love be in my heart, Each kind word sets me free
Strength be in my will Each kind deed makes me strong
To finish what I start. I will fight for the right
I will conquer the wrong

Of My Thoughts, Words and Deeds Tend with Care

My hands have been busy Your mind is a meadow
My heart is now full; To plant for your needs;
The garden I planted You are the farmer,
Has flourished and grown. With knowledge for seeds.
So too in the harvest Don’t leave your meadow
Of life may I reap Unplanted and bare,
The well-ripened fruits Sow it with knowledge
Of my thoughts, words and deeds. And tend it with care.

My Brother, Good Morning: My Sister, Good All My Doing Now Has Ended
Night All my doing now has ended,
The moon on the one hand, the dawn on the What I have learned may rest.
other: When I have done my very best,
The moon is my sister, the dawn is my brother. Wisdom, love, and strength may grow,
The moon on my left and the dawn on my right. And I shall bless all those I know.
My brother, good morning: my sister, good night.
