REPORTED SPEECH – exercises

Exercise 1 - Reported speech (statements)


Rewrite the direct speech as reported speech to complete the
sentences.

1. 'I'll send you a postcard.' He told us that he would send us a postcard.


2. 'We've bought a new car.' They told me they had bought a new car.
3. 'I don't speak German.' She said that she didn’t speak German.
4. 'You failed your art exam.' You said that we had failed our art exam.
5. 'I can't drive.' He said he couldn’t drive.
6. 'You look nice.' He told me that I looked nice.
7. 'We're going ice-skating.' They said they were going ice-skating.
8. 'The students aren't listening to me.' The teacher said the
students weren’t listening to her.

Exercise 2 - Reported speech (statements)


Rewrite the direct speech as reported speech to complete the
sentences. Pay attention to the reporting verbs as some are in the
present and some others in the past

1. Benjamin: "I often have a big hamburger."


Benjamin says (that) he often have a big hamburger.
2. Hannah: "They live in Boston."
Hannah said (that) they lived in Boston.
3. Tyler: "Ian doesn't invite girls to his parties."
Tyler told me (that) Ian didn’t invite girls to his parties.
4. Dominic: "She understands Japanese."
Dominic remarks (that) she understands Japanese.
5. Sophia: "Bella doesn't collect stickers."
Sophia explains (that) she doesn’t collect stickers.
6. Robert: "Dennis often downloads the latest tunes."
Robert added (that)Dennis often downloaded the latest tunes.
7. Olivia: "Leroy is out riding his new wave-board today."
Olivia explained (that) Leroy were out riding his new wave-board
today.
8. Luke: "I don't know what to do."
Luke added (that) he didn’t know what to do.
9. Lily: "Mr Jones is rude to Samantha."
Lily thinks (that) Mr Jones is rude to Samantha.
10. James and David: "We have to go now."
James and David tell me (that) they had to go then.
Exercise 3 - Reported speech (statements)
Rewrite the direct speech as reported speech to complete the
sentences. Pay attention to the reporting verbs as some are in the
present and some others in the past

1. Tim: "She works in an office."


Tim said (that) she worked in a office.
2. Jessica: "I am going to clean the room."
Jessica told me (that) she was going to clean the room.
3. Jeff: "They like the song."
Jeff said (that) they liked the song.
4. Ian and Marvin: "We need new shoes."
Ian and Marvin remarked (that) they needed new shoes
5. Kathy: "He can speak Spanish."
Kathy told us (that) he could speak Spanish.
6. Teacher: "Rachel has never been to Philadelphia."
The teacher said (that) Rachel had never been to Philadelphia
7. Lucy: "The train didn't arrive on time."
Lucy said to Gerry (that) the train didn't arrive on time.
8. Emma: "I'm sitting on the chair."
Emma said (that) she was sitting on the chair.
9. Nick: "Walter doesn't eat meat."
Nick told us (that) Walter didn't eat meat.

10. Holly: "Abby and Nathan will travel to Alaska."


Holly remarked (that) Abby and Nathan would travel to Alaska 

Exercise 4 - Reported speech (questions)


Rewrite the direct speech as reported speech to complete the
sentences. Pay attention to the reporting verbs as some are in the
present and some others in the past

1. Christopher: "Do you want to dance?"


Christopher asked me whether I would dance.
2. Betty: "When did you come?"
Betty wanted to know when did I came.
3. Mark: "Has John arrived?"
Mark asked me if john had arrived.
4. Ronald: "Where does Maria park her car?"
Ronald asked me where Maria parked her car.
5. Elisabeth: "Did you watch the latest film?"
Elisabeth asked me whether I watched the latest film.
6. Mandy: "Can I help you?"
Mandy wanted to know if she could help me.
7. Andrew: "Will Mandy have lunch with Sue?"
Andrew asked me if Mandy would have lunch with Sue.
8. Justin: "What are you doing?"
Justin asked me what I was doing
9. Frank: "How much pocket money does Lisa get?"
Frank wanted to know how much money Lisa got
10. Anne: "Must I do the shopping?"
Anne asked if she must do shopping

Exercise 5 - Reported speech (statement/questions)


Rewrite the following dialogue from direct speech into reported speech

Mike: "What are you doing here, Liz? I haven't seen you since June."
Liz: "I've just come back from my holiday in Ireland."
Mike: "Did you enjoy it?"
Liz: "I love Ireland. And the Irish people were so friendly."
Mike: "Did you go to the Wicklow Mountains?"
Liz: "It was my first trip. I can show you some pictures. Are you doing
anything tomorrow?"
Mike: "I must arrange a couple of things. But I am free tonight."
Liz: "You might come to my place. What time shall we meet?"
Mike: "I'll be there at eight. Is it all right?"

Mike asked Liz what she was doing here. there. He added that he hadn’t
seen her since June.

Liz explained that she had just come back from her holidays in Ireland.

Mike wondered if she enjoyed it

Liz told him that she loved Ireland and that the Irish people were so
friendly with her.

Mike wanted to know if she went to the Wicklow Mountains

Liz said that it was her first trip and that she could show to him some
pictures.
She also asked him if he was doing something for the day after

Mike explained that he must arrange a couple of things


But he added that he was free that night

Liz suggested that he might come to her place and asked him what
time should they meet

Mike said he would be there at eight


And then he asked if it was all right
