Personal Statement

The environment is continuously placed under tremendous pressure by our own hands, as shown
by the current situation in the world, and we are suffering the consequences. As a Civil and
Environmental Engineering graduate, I am driven to work for environmental conservation, and
as a result, I feel motivated to pursue postgraduate studies in environmental engineering at
Technische Universität München (TUM) in order to expand my expertise, research, and
problem-solving abilities.

My undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology

Peshawar have given me a strong and broad foundation in the field of Environmental
Engineering. The curriculum addressed basic topics such as water quantity and quality, water
distribution system, sewer design, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, waste
recycling, air pollution and control, environmental legislation and regulation.

These courses, however, were not only limited to classroom learning and exams; they also
included field trips and semester projects that enabled students to apply the theories learned in
lectures to real-world problems.

I vividly recall our field trip to Haripur's Hattar Industrial State, where I observed industrial
contaminants being discharged into natural drains. Several residents shared their exasperation
with the potable water quality and the health hazards associated with it. It was at this stage that
my concern for the environment reached a pinnacle.

I initiated a group project the following semester to create a low-cost water filter that could be
made at home. Following the successful creation of one such filter, we assisted hundreds of
households in the industrial community in installing such filters to improve the quality of their
drinking water to prevent negative health consequences.

During my sixth semester, we went on a three-day study tour to a landfill site in Lahore, where I
was confronted with massive piles of waste collected from Lahore city that were just lying there
purposelessly. While others saw it as waste, I and a few of my friends saw it as a resource that
we wanted to capitalize on.

Following the tour, I and four other friends immediately began working on turning our idea into
a reality. We founded “Waste Hunters” with the aim of designing a proper waste collection
system for Peshawar, properly reusing and recycling the collected waste, and developing an app
to monitor the waste collected and credit the providers appropriately. We were unable to
introduce our system in the entire city due to financial constraints and the Covid situation, but we
were able to do so in a small part of the city with the assistance of the National Incubation Centre
Peshawar.

Being a member of the company has given me a variety of personal attributes so far. I have good
decision-making ability under duress, as well as outstanding communication and networking
abilities. And now, every environmental concern motivates me to find a solution regardless of
personal interests, so doing something positive to preserve the environment brings me peace of
mind.

Besides studies, I love cricket, and I've already represented my school and my departmental
cricket team. I really enjoy music and travel to discover various cultures and values.

It is after a good deal of self-assessment that I have decided to pursue a master's degree in
environmental engineering. This decision followed naturally after careful consideration of my
academic background, the areas of my interest, and my overall professional goal, which is to
pursue a career in research with the development and growth of our "Waste Hunters"
organization.

Regards,

Adnan Ghafoor
