The document summarizes key aspects of humanistic education. It discusses several studies that provide evidence that Carl Rogers' humanistic approach may be more effective in achieving academic success and positive student outcomes than traditional education models. Specifically, it outlines studies by DeCarvalho (1991), Aspy and Roebuck, and Cornelius-White and Harbaugh (2010) that found humanistic teaching approaches like empathy, caring, and authenticity from teachers led to greater student achievement, creativity, thinking, and satisfaction for both students and teachers. Finally, it notes that Paulo Freire advocated for a humanistic approach centered on learners rather than teachers to help students think critically and act with humanitarian values.

HUMANISTIC EDUCATION

The purpose of humanistic education is to provide a foundation for personal growth and
development so that learning will continue throughout life in a self-directed manner (DeCarvalho, 1991).
The results of Aspy and Roebuck's study of facilitative teaching in comparison with the Giaconia and
Hedges (1982) meta-analysis of open education suggest that Rogers' (1969; Rogers & Freiberg, 1994)
approach may be more descriptive of the critical conditions for achieving academic success as well as
important affective and volitional (choice) outcomes.

Modern Humanists

1. DeCarvalho, (1991), conduct a study “humanistic paradigm in education”, It revives the humanistic
paradigm in education of Maslow and Rogers that fueled the establishment of the humanistic
movement in American psychology.

2. David Aspy and Flora Roebuck, conduct a study of facilitative teaching. Performed the largest field
study ever done 42 states and 7 countries, in the 1977 funded by the National Institute of Mental
Health over a 12-year period, focusing on what led to achievement, creativity, more student
thinking and interactivity, less violence, and both teacher and student satisfaction.

Their conclusions corroborated the earlier findings of Carl Rogers's that the more effective teachers
were empathic, caring for or prizing their students, and were authentic or genuine in their classroom
presence.

3. Jeffrey Cornelius-White and Adam Harbaugh, published in 2010, a large meta-analysis on Learner
Centered Instruction including in their analysis on the higher quality studies on person-centered or
humanistic education ever done since 1948. This covers teaching methods, classroom management
strategies, and ways to engage students and support their success. Show K-12 teachers how to use
the learner-centered instruction model to develop teacher-student relationships, as well as
relationships with parents, administrators, other teachers, and professional organizations. Focusing
on teaching as facilitation applied through warmth, trust, empathy, and realness, Learner-Centered
Instruction shows teachers how to share control and choice in classroom management through a
balance of influence and cooperation. Well-grounded in research and theory, this book emphasizes
encouragement, challenge, and adaptation for differentiated instruction through methods such as
inquiry, cooperative small group learning, and authentic, relevant endeavors.

5. Paulo Freire Authored the Humanistic

Approach In Education. Education has an important and strategic role to ensure the development of
cognitive intelligence, psychomotor and affective. Education aims to develop human potential and forms
a good personality. However, current education loses humane aspects (dehumanization). This is due to
the approach used for teaching based on the educator (teacher center) and not centered on learners
(student center). The ultimate purpose of humanistic approach in education is the learning process that
was started and is intended for the benefit of humanizing mankind. Humanizing humans, is to achieve
self-actualization, self-understanding, and self-realization people to learn optimally. The concept of
humanistic approach in education according to Freire is a process of liberation from the oppressive
system and raised awareness of the critical processes centered on educators and learners as subjects in
the process of teaching and learning. The implication of humanistic approach in education is how to
educators to encourage students to think critically and act according to the values of humanity. Since
then, the humanistic approach in education should be applied in the process of learning and teaching in
order to produce a good learner and critical of reality.
