Summary of Sujan Bhagat

Sujan was a respected farmer in his village who worked hard and saw his wealth increase over several years. However, within his own home he began to lose power and respect to his sons. When he tried to give alms to a beggar, his son insulted him and said Sujan had no right to the family's money. Upset, Sujan left and argued with his wife, who sided with their sons. For the next eight months, Sujan worked harder than ever before to regain his independence and self-respect. When the crop was harvested, Sujan was able to give generous gifts to beggars, restoring the honor he had lost.

Sujan was an altruistic farmer. Sujan work hard on his fields.

For several years Sujan's crop

yields well and his income increased that is enough to turn him towards the observation of
religious and get social prominence. Simple minded farmers, once they become affluent turn
towards religion and want to gain social prominence. Sujan started paying respects and service
to saints and ascetics, the assembling of visitors, the gathering of police officers, the singing of
devotional prayers and songs; all of these became everyday affairs.
Sujan offered his service with a gentle and tolerant attitude and was never arrogant. Since there
weren't enough well in the village sujan had a well dug for villagers.
Sujan Bhagat was highly respected man in the village but within his home he was not shown
any respect. Gradually the decision making power began to slip out of his hands. Sujan'a boys
named Bhola and Sankar did him every service that was expected, but there was no real power
in the hands of Sujan anymore. He was no longer the lord of his house, but an idol in the
temple.
Once upon a time a beggar came to his doorstep for an alms. Sujan went to offer alms to
beggar but his son Bhola snatched the basket from his hand and insulted him saying that it is
his hard earned money and Sujan has no right to take.
Sujan got hurt and went out of the house. he didn't even come for dinner he was very much
angry on his wife Bulaki, because when Bhola was insulting she didn't stop him, she was
supporting her son .Sons didn't know but bulaki was witness that how he made the house. He
worked day and night .Whatever wealth was there it was because of Sujan's hard labour but
today he has lost his right to offer the alms. He respected his wife at every point of her life .He
had given the responsibility to manage all the transaction to her. Now she has accumulated
enough money therefore she loves her son and ignoring him .Also she exhibits her ego.
Bulaki come to call Sujan for dinner but he didn't agree. Bulaki gets angry and says this is true
that in an old age a man's intellect does not work. And then aguments starts between them.
Bulaki says to Sujan that he should change according to time. It's better not to interfere in the
matter of household. Whatever sons like let them do.Be a master for the name sake. You ruled
for so long, come out of the attachment. Person who earn will be the head of the family.
Sujan was now treated like a dog guarding the house. He had to make do with whatever
leftovers were thrown at him. Sujan work day and night, and today even the right to donate and
give alms was denied to him.Sujan wanted to get his right back.
He got up in the middle of the night and began to chop the fodder for the oxen.He worked so
hard that never in the past had he exerted himself so much.
It was the month of chaitra(April) the fields had yielded their crop. Heaps of grain were piled up
in several places. This was the time when the farmer realized the worth of their laborious
toil, when their hearts filled up with pride for the success that they had reaped. A number of
beggars gathered around him, hoping to receive something. Among them was the begger who
had approached their house about 8 months ago and had to return from their doorstep
disappointed. Sujan not only gave him enough grain but also carried it himself to his village
Amola. Today he had been able to restore the respect he had
lost. After eight month of hard work, sujan was getting the fruits of his labour. That day he also
regained the decision making power that he had lost. Perseverance and dedication is very
important part of human life. It can make an old man young again. Sujan had craze to get his
right and self-respect back. He looked at the Bhola with his eyes full of pride and ordered none
of the beggar should leave empty-handed. Bhola stood there with his bowed low .Bhola did not
have the courage to say anything. he had been defeated by his elderly father.
