Course Objectives
To understand the importance of an effective manufacturing strategy to an organization.
To understand the various manufacturing and operations design decisions and how they relate to the
overall strategies of organizations.
To understand contemporary operations and manufacturing organizational approaches and the renewed
importance of this aspect of organizational strategy.
To study the different approaches of manufacturing systems.
To acquaint the technology advancement in manufacturing strategy.

After completion of the course, the students will be able to

UNIT I MANUFACTURING COMPETITION (12
Hrs)
The competitive environment in the market, The WTO agreement and its effect on Indian Industries,
Manufacturing as a competitive strategy, Competitive Advantages and Disadvantages.
UNIT II MANUFACTURING DESIGN (12 Hrs)
Product Variety, Modular Design, Design for manufacturability, Selection of manufacturing technologies,
Vendor Development, Vendor rating, Just in time manufacturing, Kanban system, and Agile Manufacturing.
UNIT III MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES (12 Hrs)
Reengineering, Total Quality Management (TQM), Materials Requirement Planning (MRP), Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP), and simulation as tools for competitive manufacturing, Intelligent Manufacturing.
UNIT IV MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS (12
Hrs)
Elementary of manufacturing systems for different manufacturing scenarios – Dedicated manufacturing
system, Flexible manufacturing system (FMS), cellular manufacturing system (CMS), and Re-configurable
manufacturing system (RMS); Selection of manufacturing systems.
UNIT V MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY (12 Hrs)
Concept of Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM), FIFO, Network based manufacturing, and E-
Manufacturing.
