A Queer Reading of ‘Aurea’ by Marissa Reorizo- Redburn
The story “Aurea” revolved around the homosocial bond between Aurea and
her childhood ‘girl’ friend, Marina. The narrative also presented the implicit interest of
Marina towards Aurea which created a queer atmosphere in the entire story.
First, let us examine the queer physical and behavioral characteristics of each
character. A typical teenage girl is seen as someone who is playful, and vulnerable
physically and emotionally. However, at the beginning of the text, Aurea was
described as a young girl who possesses physical strength. She was always
assigned to do heavy tasks both at school and at home. This is an evidence of
Aurea’s unconscious ‘tomboyish’ gender expression which supports the idea of being
queer as stated in the following textual evidence:
“Mangangalas ka kun pano niya nababalnsi an gabat kan sunong na
paninda na duwang doble kan gabat kan timbang niya. Mapapaisip ka kung
pano pa niya nalalakaw na tanos an bitis an rayo kan dalang pasiring sa
banwa……”
..Dakula siyang babayi. Mataba-taba. Birilog na matatagas an takyag asin
hita…”
On the other hand, Marina was the ‘girl’ friend of Aurea who served as the
latter’s confidante. She was a curious type of person especially on the whereabouts
of Aurea. Her curiosity and constant concern towards Aurea unfolded her implicit
interest to her. There was a special connection between them that she was not
aware of which means that she showed slight lesbian behavior. Despite of being
away from Aurea for 7 years, still she was curious about her situation.
Second, homosocial bond between Aurea and Marina existed. This started at
school where they became friends. They talked to each other about their life
particularly when Marina asked Aurea about the her ‘forced wedding’. They had an
emotional bonding by having a heart-to-heart talk. That’s when they started to have a
special bond that even until they became adults, they were still able to have updates
with one another.
“Kaamiga ko si Aurea sa eskuwelahan..Dae siyang niririrong
sako...Hinalat ko an oras kan samong Home Economics. Siya an pigtukahan
na maglinig sa kuwarto…Nagpresentar akong magtabang sa paglinig.Daing
pundo an haot ko ki Aurea kun totoo man nanggad na nagpaagom na siya….
“Nagtukaw kami sa sulok kan kuwarto. Nagpuon siyang
magistorya….Habo niyang madangog kan iba an sasabihon niya
sako..Nagkuragritan kami sa kangingirit.
Their social bonding happens when they occasionally and incidentally meet
each other. There was a time when they’ve met each other in their island after
several years with a lot of changes happened to them. “Nagkamustahan kami.
Kadakol na kapilyahan. Kadakol na kurudutan. Kuragritan. Kadakol na istorya
They talked a lot. Aurea even gave her gifts like “tinawan niya ako nin
oimported na pulang pitaka saka kinyentos yen. Tinatawan pa ngani niya akong
lipstick saka pahamot…
