Activity 1. Fill in the matrix.
List down the seven elements of non-verbal communication
and explain how it affects communication. You may cite situations/scenarios for your
answers.
          Elements Explanation
    1. Body Language Oral communication supported by body language helps
the message to be positive and easier to understand.
Example for this is talking to your friends. All your
friends sharing some funny moments and laughing
together. They express their feelings by smiling and
laughing each other while talking. That is the power of
                              body language.
    2. Distance Doing nonverbal communication needs to know the
distance of your audience is. For example, a teacher
who teach her students doing the hand gestures of
alphabets. The nearer the students is, the clearer they
see how the teacher do it. So, it will be easier for the
students to know how to do it.
    3. Touch Touching is also part of nonverbal communication.
Example for this is seeing a new friend. Saying ‘Nice to
meet you’ while shaking her hands is also termed as
                              touch.
    4. Eye Contact Eye contact with your audience has a big help to show
sincerity and honesty to your words and actions. Like,
proposing to your lover. Kneeing while presenting the
wedding box in front of your girl is a body language and
to complete that, eye contact is important. It shows the
emotions and truthfulness of your words and actions.
    5. Pausing Pausing is not only in verbal communication but also in
nonverbal communication. It is also important to pause
while you are talking or doing hand or body gestures to
make your audience gets and understand the important
points of your message. Example, In a TV patrol news.
In the other side is the person who do hand gestures.
Pausing is needed in other to achieve understanding
and emphasize the certain points of the message.
    6. Bearing Manner is also important for nonverbal communication.
Your postures reveal your composure. It makes you
confident in delivering your message. Example, a
teacher who gives authority to her special students. It is
important to have manner in doing nonverbal
                              communication to be more convincing.
    7. Pacing Nervousness is unavoidable while communicating other
people. Example, keeping your hands in your pocket or
crossing your arms may communicate nervousness and
                                detract from your speech.
LET’S ANALYZE!
Activity 1.
Explain the importance of nonverbal communication in cross/multicultural setting in two
paragraphs. Refer to the rubric on the next page.
Nonverbal communication is an interaction using non-spoken language, but it
comprises of body gesture, facial expressions and action. Nonverbal communication
plays a significant role in our lives, as it can improve a person's ability to relate, engage,
and establish meaningful interactions in everyday life. It is important especially that we
are diverse in cultures. Every culture has their own beliefs, languages and many more
but with the help of communication and interaction it lessens the possibility of
misunderstanding. A better understanding of this verbal and nonverbal communication
may lead people to develop stronger relationships with others.
Verbal communication supported by nonverbal communication makes is easier to
understand easily and to know what their true intention is. As I observed, the meaning
of gestures varies from different countries. Openness and positive attitude towards
other are not only we see in verbal communication, but it also needs nonverbal
communication. We can relate this in the saying ‘Action speaks louder than words’
which it means that our actions are more honest than our words. Showing respect to
other cultures in a nonverbal way is important because it reflect our behavior towards
other cultures.
2. Discuss the relevance of nonverbal communication in cultural and global issues in
communication in two paragraphs. Refer to the rubric below.
The relevance of nonverbal communication in cultural and global issues in
communication is the improvement of a person's ability to engage, relate, and establish
meaningful interactions in different cultures. Cultural and Global Issues affects
communication by the means of its affectivity on the people itself. It may be affecting us
individually or as a group. It may spark miscommunications or positive interactions.
In Cultural issues, we may use as an example our language barrier in our own country.
We find it hard to interact and to understand but the idea of respecting their cultures and
understand how they live help us to accept.
With the help of nonverbal communication, through allowing ourselves to
understand them by living and doing their traditions help us see the true meaning of it.
There are so many cultural and global issues in communication. Therefore, the
nonverbal communication is also important in every aspect of communication because it
somehow the bridge of relating, engaging, and accepting other cultures.
