HISTORY OF BASKETBALL, FACILITIES & EQUIPMENT, AND OBJECTIVES OF THE GAME
HISTORY
The game basketball was created in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, Head of Physical
Education at the School for Christian Workers, ordered James Naismith to create within 14 days an indoor
game as a new recreational game Naismith hang two peach baskets on the erected post about 10 feet above
the floor at either ends of gymnasium. He experimented playing the game by tossing the soccer ball to the
elevated peach basket and for every shot was recorded. In 1897, James Naismith introduced the first thirteen
rules and regulations, and the first contest was played on December 21, 1891. In 1915, the Joint Basketball
Rules Committee was formed to standardize the rules. When the 1936 Olympiad was held in Berlin, basketball
was already organized and was placed on the program of 52 countries.
THE ORIGINAL 13 RULES OF BASKETBALL
1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands; (never with the fist).
3.A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw the ball from the spot where he catches it.
Allowance should be made by a player who catches the ball, and running at a good speed, if he tries to stop.
4. The ball must be held in between the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it.
5.No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, or striking in any way by an opponent shall be allowed. The first
infringement of this rule by any player shall be counted as foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next
goal is made, or, if there is evidence of injury in any person, during, the entire game, no substitution is
allowed.
6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of Rule 3, 4, and such as described in the rules.
7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it shall count a goal for the opponents (consecutive means
without the opponents in the meantime making a foul).
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the basket and stays there,
provided those defending the goal do not touch or disturb the goal. If the ball rests on the edge and the
opponent moves the basket, it shall be counted as a goal.
9.When the ball goes “out of bounds”, it shall be thrown on to the field of play by the player first touching it.
In case of dispute, the umpire shall throw it straight onto the field. The thrower-in is given 5 seconds only; if
he holds it any longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall
call a foul on that side.
10.The umpire shall be the judge of the players, and shall note the fouls. He shall notify the referee when
three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have the power to disqualify men according to Rule 5.
11.The referee who serves as judge of the ball, shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds, to which side it
belongs, and shall keep time. He shall decide when a goal has been made, and keep account of the goal with
any other duties that are usually performed by a referee.
12.The time shall be two 15-minutes halves, with five minutes rest between.
13.The side making the most goals in the given time shall be declared the winner. In case of a draw, the game,
by agreement of the captains, may be continued until another goal is made.
OBJECTIVES OF THE GAME
1. The player must throw the ball into the opponent’s basket from above in order to gain a point or “SCORE”.
2.He/she is not allowed to throw the ball into the basket from below.

gaining score or possession.
4.The team will have to put a strong defense against the opponent because each time a player scores a basket,
the team is awarded two points if the hot is made inside the paint of perimeter, and three points if taken
beyond the arc or rainbow.
5.When a basket is scored, a player from the opposing team restarts the game by inbounding the ball into play
from behind the end line.
6.The team that has the most number of points at full-time wins the game.
7.If the scores are registered as tie at the end, full-time, extra time or overtime is played.
