Punctuation and capitalization

A. Punctuation :
Punctuation mark The use
At the end of a sentence.
Period/ Full stop .
“ “
Example: There are many shopping places in Morocco.
To separate three or more items.
Comma “ “ , Example: I need eggs, milk, sugar, and bread.

Colon “ :“ To introduce a list or to explain.


Example: There are 7 days in the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Question mark “? “ After questions.


Example: Do you love shopping?

Exclamation mark “! “ To show emotion or surprise.


Example: Aaaah that hurts!
B. Capitalization: We use capital letters (A, B, C, D……)
1. At the beginning of a sentence. Example: Clothes are very expensive in the city.
2. After a full stop/ period (.). Example: There are many shopping places in Morocco. We have supermarkets, shops…
3. Names of People. Example: Ahmed, Jamal, Salwa
4. Countries, cities, languages, and nationalities. Example: Morocco, Rabat, English, Moroccan
5. The personal pronoun “I”. Example: I am a student.
6. Days and Months. Example: Monday, Friday, September…..
Practice
A. Use punctuation marks in the correct places:

B. Rewrite these sentences using the correct capitalization:

C. Rewrite the text correctly. There are 13 capital letters, 9 periods, 4 commas, and 1 colon.
All the towns in Morocco have small specialty food shops. They sell cheese, sugar, fruits, and vegetables. These
shops replace the largest supermarkets, and offer good quality food in some of these smaller shops. Grocers do not
usually want you to touch the fruit and vegetables. They choose for you and price it. They also bag your groceries.

There are two major supermarkets chains in Morocco: Marjane and Macro. They are big supermarkets with
everything you need. You even find sections with fast food restaurants and pizzerias.
