Part 2. Questions 96 – 105 (2.0 points - 0.2/ each)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer to each question
Why is it that flying to New York from London will leave you feeling less tired than flying to
London from New York? The answer may be a clear case of biology not being able to keep up with
technology. Deep inside the brain there is a “clock” that governs every aspect of the body’s
functioning: sleep and wake cycles, levels of alertness, performance, mood, hormone levels,
digestion, body temperature and so on. It regulates all of these functions on a 24-hour basis and is
called the circadian clock (from the Latin, circa “about” + dies “day”).
This body clock programmes us to be sleepy twice a day, between 3-5 a.m and again between 3-
5 p.m. Afternoon tea and siesta times are all cultural responses to our natural biological sleepiness in
the afternoon. One of the major causes of the travelers’ malady known as jet lag is the non-
alignment of a person’s internal body clock with clocks in the external world. Crossing different
time zones confuses the circadian clock, which then has to adjust to the new time and patterns of
light and activity. To make matters more complex, not all internal body functions adjust at the same
rate. So your sleep/wake may adjust to a new time zone at one rate, while your temperature adjusts
at a different pace. Your digestion may be on a different schedule altogether.
Though we live in a 24-hour day, the natural tendency of the body clock is to extend our day
beyond 24 hours. It is contrary to our biological programming to shrink our day. That is why
travelling in a westward direction is more body-clock friendly than flying east. NASA studies of
long haul pilots showed that westward travel was associated with significantly better sleep quantity
                                                   5
and quality than eastward flights. When flying west, you are “extending” your day, thus travelling in
the natural direction of your internal clock. Flying eastward will involve “shrinking” or reducing
your day and is in direct opposition to your internal clock’s natural tendency.
One of the more common complaints of travelers is that their sleep becomes disrupted. There are
many reasons for this: Changing time zones and schedules, changing light and activity levels, trying
to sleep when your body clock is programmed to be awake, disruption of the internal circadian clock
and working longer hours. Sleep loss, jet lag and fatigue can seriously affect our ability to function
well. Judgment and decision-making can be reduced by 50%, attention by 75 percent, memory by 20
percent and communication by 30 percent. It is often suggested that you adjust your watch as soon
as you board a plane, supposedly to try to help you adjust to your destination’s schedule as soon as
you arrive. But it can take the body clock several days to several weeks to fully adjust to a new time
zone.

The Lindsay Kids of Steel Triathlon - Ontario, Canada
What is a Kids of Steel triathlon?
Triathlon is a sport that combines swimming, cycling and running. Kids of Steel events are
designed to offer those aged 6 to 19 an opportunity to take part in a triathlon, ft's all about having
fun while keeping fit. While the races are challenging, they are short enough to make sure that
everyone finishes in good time.
Who can take part?
The Lindsay triathlon is one of many such events that take place annually across the state of
Ontario. These events are organized by the Ontario Association of Triathletes (OAT) and all the
participants must be members of OAT. Membership costs $25 per year (for those aged 15 and
under) and those without a full year-membership are required to buy a $6 one-day membership on
race day in order to take part.
Distances
The Kids of Steel distances change according to the age of the athletes. For example, 14-15-
year-olds will swim 500m, cycle 16km and run 5km while the 6-7 years old will swim 50m, cycle
1.5km and run 500m. Anyone who feels unable to do a whole race on their own is welcome to enter
with up to two friends. In this way each person can do at least one part of the triathlon.
What must I do to take part?
The Lindsay triathlon will take place on Sunday 21st June, starting at the Lindsay Sports
Centre. On Saturday 20th you will need to check that you have registered to race and also pick up
your race bag, containing your competitor number, at Lindsay Sports Centre’s main reception. You
will also need to get your bike and equipment checked at the Tyre Store on West Street before you
can race. This must be done by a bike-repair expert and you will need to show a receipt to prove that
the check was done. If this Is your first race or you just feel you need some advice from experienced
triathletes and coaches, there will be a ‘clinic’ on June 17th at the Lindsay Sports Centre. There’s no
fee or registration, just come along.
Helping out
It would be impossible to run these events if we didn’t have the unpaid help of so many
people. If you are a parent of one of the kids taking part and you would like to get more involved on
the day, then please call Andy Robinson on (708} 663-3321. He’d love to hear from you. You won’t
get paid, but you will get a free T-shirt and you’ll be able to go to the after-race lunch party. You
will also have a great time and meet lots of people.
