Chapter 1
Introduction
Education plays a vital role to every individual. Through education
has become the key of success and as our weapon to conquer poverty.
Many people wanted to be educated but the problem that they encounter
are sometimes the hindrances on their ignores opportunities to enter to a
school student tend to apply as a working student over its difficult to
balance his/her academic and as a working student. Need to divide their
time and attention for school and work. For successful student, time
management is all about preparing and making every minute count,
because if not, you might end up burning out. More often than not,
working students get frustrated with their situation, especially if your
going through it alone. They are getting stress and lack of sleep because of
their responsibilities for being a working student. Isn’t easy it takes a lot
time to manage the demands of working while going to school at the same
time, with some even raising a family. It can be a daunting experience,
pout getting that diploma in the end while earning. Your goal is definitely
possible. Hundreds of people have done it, so there’s no doubt that you
can too. Ask support from your family, peers and even from your new
classmates. Let them understand why you are doing it and that you will
need their support. A working student is an individual who works while
studying it’s a matter of time management. In order to support their needs,
they need to work for themselves. Being a working student is kind of
though for us ordinary students. Every student was their our potential it is
on how they manipulare and employ it. The matter academic performance
of working student centralizes about the act of those students depending in
their studies.
Theoretical Framework
Academic performance of the working students have attracted
increased attention among the teachers and students with the aim of
knowing and understanding the reasons, problems and other factors
affecting them. This may empower them for lifelong learning to their
journey to success hindered by their busy schedule and always no time
to their study and academic performance.
Determining the concepts of this research the study comes up with
different theories. The theories that could be used are transactional model
of stress and coping it is how a person comes with stressful events.
Stressors are demands made by the internal or external
environment that upset balance, thus affecting physical and psychological
well being and requiring action to restore balance.
According to Lazarus &Folkman cognitive relational theory
defines stress as a particular relationship between the person and the
environment that is appraised by the person as taxing or exceeding his/her
resources and end

Scope and Limitation
This study focuses on the academic performance of the working
students in Ubaldo Laya Iligan City. This study limits only to students
who are currently enrolled and who are also working. Only those working
students at age 15 to 20 years old are allowed to participate in the
research. This research tells the academic performance of working
students did not affect due to time management, they can balance their
study while working and they still have time to study. The respondents of
this study will be the residents of the Ubaldo Laya Iligan City. The
researchers limit their study by giving questionnaire to the 15 respondents.
Significance of the Study
The researchers will conduct an investigation to determine the working
students how their manage their time especially in their academic
performance.
The result will give an idea and insight to the following individuals
To the students. The results will provide the students with some
knowledge on managing their time in the academic performance how it
can be managed it. It will give the students a realization that managing
their time in the academic performance.
To the Teachers. The given data would guide the teachers on what to do
with the working students that managing their time in the academic
performance. The teachers would be able to understand on the situation of
the working students.
To the Parents. Like the teachers, the parents too will understand the
situation of the working students though the given data. The given data
would help them formulate some preventive measures to help their sons
their situation. The findings would also help them learn the actions of their
children.
To the Future Researchers. The proposed study will help the researcher
as their guide they can also open an development of this study.
Definition of Terms

Review of Related Literature and Related Studies
Related Literature
Educational achievement of students demands urgent attention to
attain their goals. A numerous researches have been conducted to
contribute to determine the predictors of educational success of working
students. A research work always takes the advantages of the information
and the knowledge that had been accumulated in the past as a result of
constant research endeavor by mankind. According to Koul (2009)
research can never be undertaken in the isolation of the work that has
already been done on the problems related to the study propose by any
researcher. Every researcher reviewed the related literature from the
different resources that includes research journal, articles, books,
magazines, encyclopedias, dissertations, abstracts, international year
books, theses and most important in the present era the internet access.
The detailed account of review of related literature pertaining to variables
under study, namely academic achievement, parental encouragement,
achievement motivation and intelligence is presented here under.
According to the national statistics coordination board (NSCB)
published that the full time workers in July 2010 recorded a share of 64.3
percent of the total employed while the part time workers 35.0 percent.
The number of underemployed persons in July 2010 was estimated at 6.5
million, placing the current underemployment rate at 17.9 percent. More
than a half 58.1% of the total.
Manila Philippines about 216,000 students in the country are
currently juggling school and work, according to latest data from the
commission of higher education. The figure is about 8% of the total
number of working students in the country. Education said working
students today are mostly onto food service, entertainment and sales, apart
from their usual stints as library and research assistant. Vitriolo added that
these students are forced to work because of higher commodity prices and
tuition fees. The Education said that only 50% of working students get to
finish college, as many cannot cope and cannot concentrate on their
studies, while some have poor health, while others give up because of
insufficient funds.
Related Studies
Being always present in class and getting to school on time are
two of the crucial determining factors of a student’s success, not just as a
student but as a person who will be managing his/her own life in the
future. Given the importance of being punctual, this study aims to explore
and find out the factors that affect the punctuality of students. In this
chapter, we will be discussing about the background of our study. It
includes facts about tardiness, the different factors that causes it and its
effect to the students as students and as bearer of their own lives in the
future. From reliable research materials like online journals and research
papers, we will provide some facts and theories from authors, teachers and
notable people in order to have a concrete justification of our study.
Krishnan (1977) conducted a study on non-intellectual factors and
their influence on academic achievement. The sample comprised of 180
students of sixth to ninth class studying in central school Tirupati and was
divided into three groups depending on their parents‟ education as high,
middle and low. The results indicated that parents‟ educational status had
significant influence on the academic achievement of their children. Saini
(1977) undertook a study on academic achievement as a function of
economic status and educational standard of parents. The sample consisted
of 196 students from four colleges of Chandigarh. The findings revealed
that educational standard of parents had significant effect on the academic
achievement of arts and science students. In research proposal established
by bagongon % Edpalina 2009, the researchers planned to investigate the
possible relationship of study habits and the factors affecting it to the
academic performance of under graduate education students They used
time management, learning skills and study skills as independent variables
to find out how it affects students study habit.

Research Methodology
The chapter presents the procedures of the studies and the following
section are a.) Research Design b.) Research Setting c.) Instruments of the
Study and d.) Data Gathering
Research Design
In this study, the researchers will use the descriptive procedures to
gather the data. It is used to assessing the idea of a working students in
Ubaldo Laya Iligan City during the school year 2017-2018.
Research Setting
The setting of the study is in the Ubaldo Laya Iligan City.
Instruments of the study
The researcher designed an interview schedule as one of the data
collection instrument for this study. Instruments of the study refer to
devices used to collect data such as questionnaires, tests, structured
interview schedules and checklists (Seaman 1991:42). Polit and Hungler
(1997:466) define a questionnaire as “a method of gathering information
from respondents about attitudes, knowledge, beliefs and feelings”.
Data Gathering
In this study, the researchers distributed the questionnaire to the
said respondents, by was used in obtaining the personal information from
the respondents. This included their age, gender, names, family income
and position of work. And then the next and lastly was a survey
questionnaire about the involvement of the said respondents and their
academic performance of a working students. The researchers used vacant
time of the students to avoid distractions of classes. The students were
given a enough time to answer the questionnaire.
