Terminal Report

The document summarizes the on-the-job training experiences of two engineering students at Mariano Marcos State University. Over six weeks, their duties included inventorying tools and equipment, cleaning rooms and air conditioners, collecting stones, painting structures for a large distiller, assisting with smaller distillers by gathering firewood and monitoring furnace temperatures, and helping instructors prepare reports. The trainees observed the responsibilities of their instructors and sought to gain knowledge from various maintenance, construction, and operational tasks during their placement.

MARIANO MARCOS STATE UNIVERSITY

I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) is a comprehensive institution of

higher learning in the Ilocos region, which was establish in 06 January 1978 by Presidential
Decree (PD) 1279 and named after the father of former President Ferdinand E. Marcos. The
decree merge two state colleges in the province of Ilocos Norte, the then Mariano Marcos
Memorial College of Science and Technology (MMMCST) with campuses in Batac,
Currimao, Paoay and Dingras, and the Northern Luzon State College (NLSC) in Laoag City.
It also transferred the college departments of the Ilocos Norte College of Arts and Trades
(INCAT) in Loag City and Ilocos Norte Agricultural College (INAC) in Pasuquin.

The university is relatively young compared to other state universities in the

Philippines. However, MMSU’s root anchored deep, its foundation is strong, and its
beginnings all proven historical turning points as far back as the early 1900’s.

To date, the university has ten academic units: Graduate School, College of
Agriculture, Food and Sustainable Development, College of Aquatic Science and Applied
Technology, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, Economics and
Accountancy, College of Engineering, College of Health Sciences, College of Industrial
Technology, College of Teacher Education and College of Law.
A. MISSION:

To sustain an effective and responsive College of Engineering that will serve as an

instrument in regional, national, and global industrialization.

B. GOAL:

To produce competitive engineers in accordance with act standards of excellence who

shall assume active leadership in the field of engineering and technology.

C. CORE VALUES:

1. Knowledge. Upholding knowledge as empowerment, we aim to develop intelligent

individuals who can make informed decisions.
2. Inclusiveness. We support and encourage diversity and collaboration, engaging in
programs that promote growth and development for all sectors of society.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING REPORT

II. IMPRESSION / OBSERVATION

i. FIRST IMPRESSION
On the job training is a very important point in a student’s life because
it gives us the ability to gain firsthand knowledge and experience on the jobs
of our designated workplace. Engr. Mateo gave us the privilege to partake our
OJT experience at our very own school, Mariano Marcos State University. It
was a familiar sight at first, but when we spent a couple days there we were
introduced to a much different environment than what we would get as to
attend classes.

ii. OBSERVATION ON THE WORK / ASSIGNMENTS AS OJT

On our observations, the instructors on our department are very

responsible and experienced. Engr. Mateo made sure that we were not
distracted by our mobile phones so he prohibited us from using them for
unimportant matters. For the assignments that were given to us trainees, we
were tasked by Engr. Mateo to do the inventory on the tools and other
equipment. While Engr. Mateo was out for a week, Engr. Romas and Engr.
Iduria were the ones to instruct us for the week. They assigned us to clean the
department and other rooms as well. Although at first it was mostly cleaning
and maintenance we took in everything we can learn during those times.
iii. DISCUSS / SUMMARIZE THE DAILY WORK AND ACTIVITIES

On the first day of our training, we went to Mariano Marcos State

University College of Engineering and met Engr. Mateo. Sir Mateo instantly
gave us our first task which was to do an inventory on the tools and equipment
and then list all of the missing tools. Once we were done doing the inventory
Engr. Mateo got a request from the Dean’s Office to unmount two window
type aircon from the office. After we got the air conditioning units out from
the office Sir Mateo instructed us to open the units and clean the interior. The
first week of our OJT consisted of us continuing the aircon maintenance.

While Engr. Mateo was out, Engr. Romas and Engr. Iduria were the
ones to give us our duties for the second week. The second week was us
cleaning the department and the rooms that we were in charge with. After
cleaning the rooms Sir. Iduria asked us to fill up two sacks with stone, at that
time we didn’t really know the purpose of the stone until Sir Mateo got back
and explained it to us.

The third week we trainees were sent to CIMEA and were to stay there
for the majority of the days. During our stay there we were to assist the
workers on their work on the 850 Liter distiller. Building the distiller took a
lot of man power, so we the trainees did the easier work to take off the work
load of the employees. We painted the roof for the housing of the distiller on
the earlier days of the week, halfway through the week they asked us to weld
the base of the cooling tower and after that we painted the base of the finished
cooling tower.

On the fourth and fifth week Sir Mateo sent us to CRL to observe the
smaller bio-ethanol distillers. During our stay there we assisted the employees
there in collecting firewood, distillation requires a lot of time during its run so
collecting a lot of wood and feeding it to the furnace was our task, also we
monitored the temperature of the base of the furnace to avoid a collapse. Using
an infrared thermometer we took the temperature on the outside of the furnace,
by doing this we had a way to know if the material of the furnace was nearing
its annealing temperature. One furnace was nearing its annealing temperature
so we put bricks on the inside of it to act as insulation and when we were
finished putting the bricks, the furnace was nowhere near its annealing
temperature and it required less firewood on the process.

On the earlier days of the sixth week, the activities we did were almost
the same as the fourth and fifth week. We helped the employees on the
distiller, we collected wood, filled up the kettle with nippa sap, and monitored
the temperature. After that we stayed at COE and helped our instructors on
preparing their AACUP reports. We did some minor editing to their reports
and then bound them all. Although the activities we did during our OJT were
lighter in comparison to the others we still took in everything we could learn.
