ABSTRACT

The research entitled “THE EFFECTS OF COMPUTER TO

THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE 12 ICT
STUDENTS IN PTVHS” aims to identify the effects of computer to the
students in Senior High School. The subject of the study is the Senior
high school students of Paracelis Technical and Vocational High
School. It is composed of 28 selected respondents through
judgemental sampling. The statements of the problems are; (1.)What
are the academic performances of grade 12 ICT students in PTVHS for
the S.Y 2018-2019? (2) What are the effects of computer to the
academic performance of the grade 12 ICT students in PTVHS for the
S.Y 2018-2019? (3) What are the purposes of computer to the grade
12 ICT students in PTVS for the S.Y 2018-2019? Likert Scale using
overall mean and tallies were used to analyze the data.
The data in this research was collected through questionnaire in
the form of checklist and it was properly administered to the
respondents. Frequency tallies were made from the responses under
each response mode. The item means were computed by multiplying
the frequencies under each response mode by their respective
weights. The products were added and the sum was divided by the
total frequency. The category means were also computed by adding all
item means and dividing the sum by the number of respondents which
is 28. Both the item and category means were scaled using an
appropriate statistical tool.
The researchers found out that the students are favored and
uses computer in a good way. Computer is very effective in educational
purposes and learning competencies of students. Meanwhile, the
grade 12 ICT students shows that computer on the other side brings
little disadvantage to students like health issues (migraine, back pain).
Lastly, the study found out that the students in PTVHS uses computer
with a good purpose, it is an essential tool in boosting their skills and
competencies. Thus, their academic Performance is very satisfactory.
CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Paracelis Technical and Vocational High School is a secondary

school which is located in Labay, Bantay, Paracelis, and Mountain
Province. As a secondary school it offers both junior and senior high
school. As a senior high school it offers Technical and Vocational
Strand with 4 specialized tracks namely: Automotive,
Tailoring/Dressmaking, Bread and Pastry/ Cookery and ICT
(Information Communication Technology).
In Paracelis Technical and Vocational High School, students
and teachers are using computer in various purposes. They can make
their projects and requirements better and faster specially in doing their
research because they can use it as a source of data and information,
encoding their reports and storing the important data about theirs
subjects. Most teacher also use computer specially in presenting their
topic using PowerPoint applications and in computing the grades of
students.
Computer is a machine or device that performs and processes,
calculations and operation based on instruction provided by a software
or hardware program. It is important in every individual’s daily activity
especially to students who do their research, projects, and
assignments easier and faster. Coen (1996), revealed that modern
technology provides identification education advantages such as
greater access to information and more compelling presentation over
use of technology specially gadget as computer. It is also considered to
be the basic tool for learning in the ICT strand.
Computer was considered as one of the most popular
technology invented that has been created by man on earth that is one
of the most powerful machine that runs almost all the part of the world
to make life easier and better.

1
It is used in different fields like in business, medicine,
entertainment, communication, and especially in education.
In addition to that, Aquino (2005), said that the importance of
computer is to develop products fast and make decisions fast ability to
have fluid organization structure, able to cope with the demanding work
force and internal environmental by the rapid development of
innovative approaches and lastly using information system confirms the
company’s mission vision.
Morse (1991), also mention that computer use in educational
purpose is not limited to assisted instructional (CAI). Computer may
also be used as an educational strategy to improve overall learning and
computer achievements. Ema and Ajayi (2006) also state that the use
of computer has had a major impact in the secondary school context
and in teaching and learning methods because through computers it
can improve the output of every student.
Moreover, Cawis (2017), stated computer is very useful to
students as a tool of researching their assignments and projects in
Saliok National High School. She also mentioned that the said school
is very active in using computer especially if it’s important to them.
Similarly, Morse (1991) mentioned that computer as use in education is
not limited to Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI). Computer may also
be used as an educational strategy to improve overall learning and
computer achievements.
However, Computer and other related technologies have
become an enormous part of their daily lives. Nowadays it can be
observed that there are students who ignore and forget the proper use
of computer, thus becoming a problem and concern for most parents.
Some students are using computer in an unproductive way like
watching videos, playing online games, to access social networking
sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Skype and etc. that can influence
their academic performance in the school if they become addicted in
the improper use of computers.

2
According to Salang-ey (2018), the computer is a disturbance to
their children’s education because most student nowadays are
addicted to computer games like counter’s strike for the boys and
social networking site such as Facebook, twitter, and others for the
girls.
This study aims to identify the Effects of computer usage to the
academic performance of grade 12 ICT student in PTVHS. Through
this study, the students’ awareness about computer will be increased,
as the number one user of technology they will be given an idea about
the effects of computer to their academic performance considering their
grade as an indicator, they will also be able to determine ways on how
to balance the educational purposes of computer and its pleasure
purposes as much as academic performance is concerned, for parents
to know the negative effects of computer so that they will be able to
constantly monitor the activities performed by their children with the
use of computer and to strictly implement rules on the use of computer
to their children, for teachers to guide and advice students with the
proper use of computer. Moreover the result of the study will serve as
basis who will be conducting other related studies about computer
usage and its effect to academic performance.

The illustration above shows the overall academic performance
of the grade 12 ICT students for the first semester. The academic
performance of the male students is 85% which is described as very
satisfactory. The female students garnered an average of 90% with an
outstanding description. Finally, the overall average and academic
performance of the grade 12 ICT students in PTVHS for the first
semester is 87. 5% which can be further interpreted as very
satisfactory. In general, the result implies that the academic
performance of the grade 12 ICT students in Paracelis Technical and
Vocational High School is very good.

researches, assignments, and
presentation.
Table 2: Frequency level of uses of computer as perceived by the
grade 12 ICT students in PTVHS SY 2018-2019
The main objective of table 2 is to determine the frequency level of
the uses of computer as perceived by the grade 12 ICT students in
PTVHS. It was measured through a 5 point Likert scale with the
following items never, almost never, occasionally, almost every time
and every time. The highest obtained mean is 4.80 for the item
stating that computer is use for academic/educational communication
and updates.
This implies that the ICT students use computer for this purpose
every time. This findings supports the idea of Howell, T. (2007), stating
that technology has also diversified the avenue of academic
communication. E-mail provides the opportunity for students to easily
communicate with teachers and peers. E-mail can make it easier to ask
questions for those students too shy to raise a hand in class or visit the
teacher face – to –face during office hours. Students can also send e-
mail with questions whenever they think of them rather than having to
wait until the professor is available to be asked.
Email also enhances student’s learning with people other than
faculty. Students can easily discuss ideas in individually addressed
emails or with entire groups of fellow students on electronic mailing
lists. Opportunities like this allow students to continue class discussion
outside of the classroom or review class materials with others for
clarity. More than two-thirds of college students have reported
belonging to at least one of these academic electronic mailing lists
(Jones, et al., 2002)
A mean of 4.76 also shows that the students use computer for
accessing information in the web every time. This implies that often
times students relies on information offered by the internet. As stated
by Thompson, (2003), often times, students’ primary resource for an
assignment will be a commercial Internet search engine or general web
surfing “instead of using more reliable points of access such as library
databases or their library’s homepage”. Seventy- five percent of
students reported they are successful in finding information that they
need for academic assignments (Thompson, 2003).
The result also shows that the students use computer for the
completion of school requirements all most every time with a mean of
4.17. As stated by, Howell, T. (2007), students now use computers in
virtually everyday aspect of their academic work from taking notes to
turning assignments, researching topics to questioning professors.

11
A mean of 3.9 implies that computer is use as a tool of
instruction to students like practicing keyboard typing in Encarta, excel
calculations, PowerPoint presentation, and others almost every time.
The academic use of computer and the internet is much more
diverse than simply doing online research. The most basic use is in
word – processing. The ability to quickly type legible documents, save
them for later use, and easily edit their contents has made writing for
classes much easier and efficient. Similarly, applications like Microsoft
excel have made it easy to create tabular data and perform simple
calculations. Presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint and
Apple Keynote allow students to make professional- looking multimedia
presentation for classes. Howell, T. (2007).
A mean of 3.83 implies that the grade 12 ICT students use
computer for fun, entertainment and socialization almost every time.
The largest personal use of computers and the internet is seems
to be web browsing for pleasure and recreation. With seemingly
endless amount of website, students are virtually assured of finding
something interesting online to occupy their time if they look. Often the
sites visited follow along with traditional hobbies and interests.
(Lenhart, Madden & Hitlin, 2005).

Table 3: Level of Effects of Computer Usage to the Academic
Performance of the Grade 12 ICT students in PTVHS for SY 2018 -
2019
The main objective of table 2 is to know the level of effects of
computer usage to the academic performance of the grade 12 ICT
students in PTVHS. It was measured through a 5 point Likert Scales
with items Not at all an effect, slight effect, minor effect, moderate
effect and major effect. The result shows that the highest computed
mean is 3. 70, which implies that health issues like migraine, back
pains, eye strain, headache, sleep disorder, and others caused by
radiation and very long exposure to computer resulting to poor
attendance in class is a minor effect of computer usage to the
academic performance of the grade – 12 ICT students. Meanwhile
Poor time management associated to the use of computer for fun and
entertainment resulting to poor academic performance with a mean of
3.52 also implies that it is a moderate effect of computer. A mean of
3.43 implies that the respondents consider dependency to computer
affecting the presentation, delivery and submission of requirements as
a minor effect of computer to academic performance. Another minor
effect of computer to the academic performance of ICT students with
a mean of 3.35 is the item which states that students depend to
information gathered through the internet which lowers their higher
order thinking skills.
Lastly, study habits as a result spending a lot time using
computer for fun and entertainment such as games and watching
videos obtained a mean of 3.26 was considered by the students as
minor effect of computer to academic performance. Although the result
obtained is interpreted as a minor effect, it can still be perceived that
using computer for fun and entertainment has a negative effect as far
as academic performance is concerned. This result is in line with
previous studies that point out that using computer for leisure purpose
leads to worse result at school. Particularly, for the students, computer
probably plays an important role in entertainment meaning that an
excessive use of it can reduce time devoted to study outside school,
(Ponzo, M., 2006)
In general, the result shows that there was no major effect of
computer usage to the academic performance of the Grade 12 ICT
student in PTVHS SY 2018 – 2019 identified. Most of the given items
was rated by the students as minor effect of computer to academic
performance.

CHAPTER IV
Conclusion and Recommendation
Conclusion
The findings of this study led to the following conclusion, the
average grade of the Grade 12, ICT students is very satisfactory, which
means that there is no problem when it comes to their academic
performance. The frequency level of the uses of computer is quite high
for academic uses such as academic/educational communication and
updates through messenger and email for verification purposes,
accessing information in the web, and for the completion of school
requirements such as researches, assignments, and presentation. The
level of effects of computer usage could also be highlighted as
moderate for health issues like migraine back pains, eye strain,
headache, sleep disorder, and others caused by radiation and very
long exposure to computer resulting to poor attendance in class and
poor time management associated to the use of computer for fun and
entertainment resulting to poor academic performance. This implies
that academic performance could be linked to the abuse or improper
use of computer.
Recommendation
The researchers would like to recommend to the grade 12
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to use computer in a
proper way. They must use in important matters such as educational
purposes instead of wasting their time for unnecessary things like
playing games, and watching videos. The students should also observe
proper time management and value the importance of computer in their
academic performance. This requires relevant and deep understanding
on the concepts and impacts in order to value the uses of computer
and abstain or prevent the negative consequences to the academic
performance of the students.
The parents should also constantly monitor the activities of their
children through the use of computer and if possible implement strict
rules to their children with regards to the use of computer at home and
other computer shops.
The teachers to constantly remind and advice the students in the
proper use of computer.
For computer shop owners to strictly follow implemented laws
and ordinances discussing the allowable time for students in the
computer shops and if possible limit the time of students using
computer for the purpose of games and recreations.
