Abstract: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have proven to be immensely valuable assets for a wide
range of applications from remote sensing and forest fire detection to military surveillance. However,
large scale UAVs come with logistical complexities, not to mention substantial purchasing and
operational costs. Our project ‘Solar Powered UAV for Surveillance with Long Endurance’ aims at
mitigating not only the manufacturing and operational costs, but also the logistical hurdles faced in the
transportation, fueling, deployment and control of UAVs. We aim to achieve an aerial vehicle which falls
under the miniature or small UAV category with a Maximum Take Off Weight (MTOW) of 5Kg, with a
wing span of around 3.2 meters. The relatively compact size of the UAV along with modular construction
will allow for ease of transportation and assembly. The aircraft will be modeled in CAD and the structural
aspects will be analyzed in ANSYS using computational fluid dynamics and one-way fluid structure
interaction. The aircraft will be powered using a rich energy density lithium-polymer battery, connected
to an array of high efficiency solar cells mounted on the wings interfaced with a Maximum Power Point
Tracking (MPPT) charge controller, ensuring that under nominal flying conditions, the battery will be
charging at maximum efficiency using the solar cells which will be running a brushless DC motor
powering the aircraft. The solar powered UAV will have a suite of the latest flight control systems on
board. An ArduPilot Module (APM) 2.8 flight controller with built in inertial measurement unit (IMU)
will function as the brain of the aircraft. Connected to it will be a high precision GPS unit for positional
awareness. A telemetry module operating on off-band frequency will be used to communicate in real
time with a ground station, relaying real time position and performance parameters. The APM has the
capability of fully autonomous flight along pre-planned flight routes with a complete failsafe and safety
measures system ensuring that the aircraft is secure and reliable. The surveillance systems onboard the
UAV will consist of a high-resolution daytime camera connected with a high-power, long-range video
transmitter, transmitting real time footage to the ground station receiver module. The power system
running alongside the control system of the UAV will guarantee a reliable, long endurance solar powered
UAV with surveillance capabilities for a wide range of uses in the real world.

Low Cost Refrigeration System Using LPG
Talha Bin Zahid, Hafiz Muhammad Haseeb Javed
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
talhabinzahid01@gmail.com, prhaseeb@gmail.com

Abstract: This research mainly focuses on the development of refrigeration system using
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). As World is suffering from severe climate change and energy
crises so, main aim of this project is to design and develop low-cost refrigeration system using
LPG instead of R134a. LPG comprises of 24.4% propane, 56.45% butane and 17.25% iso-butane.
LPG is cheaper gas with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and zero Global Warming
Potential (GWP). After the refrigeration process LPG is utilized for combustion purposes. In this
research, analytical modeling is performed, and refrigeration system is developed and simulated.
The mechanism involved the storage of LPG in cylinder at high pressure i.e., 80 psi to 120 psi,
which when passed through the capillary tube loses its pressure and changes its phase from liquid
to gas. Due to phase change latent heat is absorbed by refrigerant from surrounding and as a result
of which refrigeration effect is produced. After cooling the gas is burnt in the burner for cooking
or any other purpose. Then real time testing is done and the Coefficient of performance (COP) of
refrigeration system was calculated which comes out to be 4.49 and it is greater than the domestic
refrigerator. Hence this refrigeration system is more efficient than the domestic refrigerator. Total
heat transfer coefficient of this refrigerator comes out to be 8.428 Watts which is very low making
the overall system efficient and environment friendly.

Linked Breaking System in Two-Wheeler Bikes
Syed Musharraf Ali Gillani, Muhammad Hasnat
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
syedmusharafgillani@gmail.com , mhasnat0123@gmail.com

Abstract: It was in 1902 when first times drum brakes were developed. The field of automotive
is being revolutionize day by day and the simple drum brakes are being discontinue due to its
limitations. This is the reason that the linked braking system is used to enhance the efficiency in
terms of stopping a bike in less time. The brakes in bikes have always been a great target. These
bikes are moving with great speed and to reduce fatal accidents these bikes need a braking system.
The pressure applied by brakes on wheel is so critical that it either can stop the bike effectively or
it can lock the wheels leading to fatal accidents. LBS would assist bikes in stopping them without
locking the tires completely by just activating both front and rear brakes together with certain
delay. Small bike engines like (70cc and 125cc) lack such type of advanced braking system. The
branches of automotive are evolving day by day. The efforts should be made to make these
branches develop and expand. Stopping a bike accelerating with greater speed in less time can be
done just by connecting front and rear brakes with each other so that the load can be distributed on
two brakes on stopping rather on one brake. The major portion is the ratio of pressure distributed
on both brakes to prevent it from skidding. A Link braking system can be created to enhance safety
and comfort by establishing a hydraulic system/connection between the front brake control and the
rear clipper or vice versa. The hydraulic system would be implemented along with a delay and
proportional control valve, which will distribute pressure of biker foot applied on lever to both
brakes with a certain ratio. The front brake is connected with delay valve and PCV so we can be
able to control the pressure to maximum and minimum as per our requirement. By pressing the
brake or applying the brake lever, the hydraulic pressure is applied to PCV and the delay valve
then the pressure is supplied to both front and rear brake to provide efficient braking. It is found
out that the LBS help the bikes to stop his/her vehicle more quickly than a biker using single brake.
The biker can easily control his/her vehicle by distributing brake pressure on both tires at the same
time. The rider would feel safer and more comfortable with LBS system in terms of control. The
poor people can only afford CD 70 but they do want / desire to have advanced braking system to
be installed in their low-price bikes to give them satisfaction of control and happiness. It will
reduce the stopping distance when brakes are applied and help in reducing accidents. It is
comfortable and cheaper as compared to ABS and also reduces chances of locking the wheels. For
the reasons mentioned above LBS advanced braking system should be implemented for better
future

shahzaibnaveed194@gmail.com, 11abdulbari11@gmail.com

Abstract: RSW is an efficient joining method commonly used in automotive industry. Auto body
assembly requires between 7000 and 12000 welding spot welds depending on the size of welding.
Failure in spot weld joining parts because of not suitable welding parameter setup and it cause a
low strength. Also the method is adaptable to high speed automation and is under strict cycle times.
We will perform spot welding simulations using simufact welding software on sheets of Al-Mg
alloy and HSLA steel by changing different spot weld parameters like weld time, current, hold
time and clamp force. We will study the effect of these parameters on the strength of weld and see
which parameters are most suited to give us high strength of spot welds for sheet metal
applications.

Abstract: Wind energy is the source of renewable energy which is available in abundance, but the
wind current varies with time and space, the idea is to utilize this energy to produce clean and
affordable energy and to reduce pollution due to burning of fossil fuel. In this project, the design
and fabrication of roadside vertical axis wind turbine were focused. Savonius type vertical axis
wind turbine which rotates due to drag forces produced by wind was selected due to its easy
manufacturability and its ability to operate in highly turbulent air flow. The fluctuations in wind
can be dealt by storing the electricity over the day as the turbine generation would be of intermittent
fashion. The preliminary design of turbine was modeled on Solidworks software, analytical
modeling was done on MATLAB, an algorithm was defined based on energy conservation of a fly
wheel for rotational velocity, torque, and power extraction to validate the results 2D CFD analysis
was performed to calculate torque and rotational velocity of blade when gust of a fast-moving bus
hit the blades of turbine. The commercial size prototype of the turbine will be fabricated. The
prototype will be tested at the university road, by passing the bus at 100kph from 1m distance from
the turbine. The power produced by one gust will be noted and compared with analytical and
numerical results.

ahmed.raza5475@gmail.com, muhammad.7august@gmail.com

Abstract: Harmonic drive is a coaxial, compact, and lightweight gear drive providing remarkably
large gear ratios without backlash It can be used for precise positioning and control in industrial
robots. Although harmonic drives are in use since a long time and have been studied for centuries
under the principles of solid mechanics but still lack strong bodies of literature, principles, and
computational tools for their design. This paper focuses on the design of a micro harmonic drive
using two different materials for circular spline and circular spline cup and understanding the
influence of the geometries of the wave generator and tooth profiles of the flexible spline and the
circular spline over stresses throughout the operation of harmonic drives. In doing so,
computational tools have been developed and design recommendations have been formulated. The
models are analyzed and the resulting stresses for each design are compared to determine which
geometries and micro-geometry modifications are the most influential over the mechanical
performance of this type of gear drive in small size.

Abstract: As we now day by day world’s population is increasing rapidly due to which use of
plastic is also increasing, due to improper disposal of plastics, people throw plastics and related
materials directly into seas and oceans which affect human and marine life. Similarly, due to
leakage in oil tanker and ships in seas, the oil is spilled. This oil creates a layer on surface of sea
which blocks supply of oxygen to marine life. We need cleaner oceans and to protect marine life.
In order to overcome this problem, we designed a seabin using different software’s and parameters,
performed structural and CFD analysis on ANSYS by varying different parameters and then tested
the seabin.

Abstract: Demand for large-caliber and ultra-large-caliber antennas is increasing with the rapid
development of the space science and astronautical technology. However, the caliber of the
antennas is severely restricted by weight and volume limitations of the launch vehicle such as
cowling for space use. Communication and data transmission between the various types of
spacecraft in space and the earth need to be realized by antennas, with the rapid development of
aerospace science and technology, gain requirements of space antennas are getting higher and
higher to meet the needs of different space missions. A simple and effective was to increase the
antenna gain is to increase the diameter of antenna, due to the limited space on the launcher, large
diameter antennas are usually constructed in deployable forms, deployable antennas can be folded
during storage and transport and fully deployed in orbit. The rapid development of the aerospace
industry has advanced further requirements to space antennas, such as large aperture, high
accuracy, light weight and high rigidity, etc. For the limited space available on current transport
vehicles, the large space antennas are designed as the deployable structures. Most of the work has
been completed which includes, design of deployable structure, modeling of deployable structure
on SolidWorks, Motion analysis using analytical techniques as well as using the software
ADAMS, dynamic analysis using ANSYS. Motion analysis includes the velocity analysis,
acceleration analysis and displacement analysis. Natural frequencies are studied in the dynamic
analysis. Some working is being done to further improve the design and make it more reliable and
repeatable.

Abstract: The population of world is growing at very fast rate, as a result the demand of power
and electricity is also increasing. The mankind has been using fossil fuels to fulfill their energy
needs. These are non-renewable resources which are depleting at an alarming rate. But the
countries around the world have realized that this can badly affect the future of this world. The
world is now shifting towards sustainability, which ensures the bright future for coming
generations. One of the important aspects of sustainability is to shift to renewable energy resources
such as wind energy, hydropower and solar energy etc. These projects will emphasis on the clean
energy from slow moving water which is available in abundance. The slow-moving water turbines
are becoming very popular due to their compact design and small investment unlike dams that
need huge investments. These turbines can harvest energy from run of the river moving around 1
to 5 ms-1. A slow-moving water turbine of horizontal configuration with deflector has been studied
and fabricated in this study. The turbine profile has been taken from literature. Two profiles (flat
and curve) with different configurations have been used in simulations. CAD models of turbine
and deflectors were made in a water domain moving at 1.5 ms-1. The mesh grid analysis was done
using different mesh size. Mesh of 1.3 million was found to be appropriate for this application.
After that, the simulations have been done for turbine with different deflectors at different angles.
On the basis of these simulations, turbine with the highest free run velocity and optimum power
output has been selected for fabrication. The results showed that flat deflector at an angle of 40-
50o can achieve free run velocity around 155 RPM, which gives optimum power output. The
turbine with aforementioned specifications has been manufactured with adjustable deflector to
achieve optimum power output in practical operation.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Heat Transfer Enhancement
with Optimized Fin and Hybrid Nano Fluid for Transformer
Haseeb Alam, Hammad Asif
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
haseebbalam557@gmail.com, asifhammad455@gmail.com

In Pakistan for the last decade electricity production and distribution has been a major problem.
The production rate has increased in the last 5 years but the electricity distribution still remains a
problem. Transformers are major component in distribution but due to inefficient cooling system
most of them fail due to excessive load. Our motivation is to develop an efficient and effective
thermal management system for the transformer. This will increase the load carrying capacity of
transformer and will also save cost and time on repairing of transformers. In summers, majority
transformers fail due to overloading. The main reason is that either they have inefficient cooling
system or fluid. In rural areas if a transformer fails then it takes weeks to replace that with the new-
one. So our project aims at designing an optimum fin design and use of hybrid nano fluids to
increase the heat transfer rate and reduce the chances for transformer failure during high load time.
The methodology used for this project was to first design a CAD model of the existing fin design
and then import it into the ANSYS FLUENT, run simulations and obtain results. After that the
optimization of this design was done by attaching circular fins on the fin and then was again
imported to ANSYS FLUENT and results were obtained after simulations. The simulations
showed that for existing fin design there was a difference of 13 degrees Celsius between the inlet
and outlet temperatures of fin but for the optimized fin design that temperature difference increased
to 18 degrees Celsius using mineral oil as a fluid through the fin. The results showed that the
optimized fin design had better temperature drop as compare to the existing fin design. This shows
that our project will help is designing a fin that will be more efficient in heat transfer and will work
better in high load capacity. This will also reduce the chance of transformer failure and will be
more efficient in electricity distribution.

Heat Sink design by Topology Optimization using Oblique Fins
Muhammad Aizaz Ud Din, Ahmed Ali Mughal
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Institute of Space Technology
aizazuddin483@gmail.com, ahmadmughal6787@gmail.com

Abstract: The project mainly focuses on the design and topology optimization of heat sink to
enhance the cooling performance of thermal heat sinks. Heat sinks are one of the most common
forms of thermal management in technology, machinery, and even in natu ral systems. They
increase the heat flow away from a hot device by increasing the device's working surface
area and the amount of low-temperature fluid that moves across its enlarged surface area.
In conventional heat sinks the thick layer at solid-liquid interface reduces the heat transfer
rate which in result consumes more electrical energy. If the system is thermally enhanced,
then less energy will be consumed, and system will perform equally. It is aimed to find
different parameters like Effective thermal resistance coefficient, minimized pressure drop
and better fluid mixing, heat transfer rate, base temperature etc. which are enhanced through
simulations and applied while fabricating the model.

Abstract: According to WHO 2018 report, 20.28% of deaths in Pakistan happen due to coronary
heart diseases. In the US, yearly need of heart transplant range between 50 to 100,000 but only
2300 donor hearts are available. To cope with the need of heart transplants, total artificial hearts
are designed that increase the life expectancy by performing vital function of blood pumping
throughout the human body. Our design of continuous total artificial heart consists of assembly
RVAD and LVAD combined through a single shaft powered by a dual shaft motor. The TAH is
designed to work under a series of flow rates ranging from 3-7 l/min and can maintain blood flow
pressures within the range of physiological need of human body.

Development of A Cost-Effective Oxygen Concentrator
Syed Ali Fazeel, Muhammad Waqi Akram

fazirzv14@gmail.com, waqiakram@yahoo.com

Abstract: Due to an increase in respiratory diseases since 2019, oxygen supply devices have grown
in importance. However, the commonly used oxygen cylinders are not long-lasting. And the
oxygen concentrators (devices that produce pure oxygen by separating nitrogen) are too expensive
to import as there are no local versions. Hence, we are trying to manufacture Pakistan’s first ever
oxygen concentrator. This should work the same as a regular imported concentrator and be usable,
but it should be manufactured at an inexpensive cost. Our approach is to create the basic structure
of the concentrator (one compressor, two cylinders, one surge tank, and one oxygen analyzer).
This should work on the Pressure Swing Adsorption principle. While the system is still under
fabrication, the results show that changing the molecular sieve size and the pressure affects the
concentration and flowrates. The implications are that having the system work simultaneously and
obtaining a cost-effective oxygen analyzer (or an alternative) will be challenging.

Fabrication of a Low-cost Portable Ventilator

tauseefattique@gmail.com

Abstract: The relative increase in respiratory diseases especially after COVID-19 has called for
external assistance to the victims in the form of ventilation. Commonly available artificial
ventilating units are expensive to manufacture and require trained staff for their smooth operation.
Moreover, treatment costs for ventilator-dependent patients are a burden on their families. To
tackle and fulfill the urgent need for ventilators, we have come up with a device that is low-cost,
portable, and easy to assemble, designed to fight respiratory disorders. The system uses a linkage
mechanism run by a motor to automate the squeezing of an AMBU bag under PWM and provides
ventilation according to clinically specified parameters. This design will reconfigure oxygen flow
rate, applied pressure, and air volume for the needs of individual patients. Calculations are made
for the minimum volume for an AMBU bag to provide sufficient oxygen for the average total lung
capacity. The estimated cost for ongoing fabrication of this design is almost 160 USD.

Thermal Management of Microelectronics Devices Using Nano fluid with
Metal Foam Heat Sink

Abstract: Microelectronic devices are used in a variety of applications ranging from processing
units of computers and laptops to smart appliances. Microelectronic devices fail at temperatures
exceeding 373 K and temperatures above 343 K are considered dangerous. To counter heat
dissipation in microelectronics cooling systems are needed. This can be achieved using a
combination of metal foam, heat sinks, and nanofluids. A numerical approach has been taken to
calculate the best result while varying the dimensions and material of the heatsink, the material,
porosity, and pore density of the metal foam, and the velocity, concentration, and nanoparticle
material for the nanofluids. Models for each of the parts were designed on Solidworks software.
The numerical simulations were carried out on ANSYS FLUENT. The numerical results were
verified using experimental results for the same model, and agreement between the results found.
Using the results obtained, it was found that best results were obtained at a fin height of 25 mm,
base thickness of 2 mm, fin thickness of 2 mm, and fin spacing of 10 mm. It was also found that
Copper acted as a better material for the heatsink than aluminum. The cooling system designed
will be capable of dissipating the required amount of heat effectively and efficiently.

Solar Vapor Absorption Cycle

Abstract: Refrigeration is crucial in the domestic and industrial domain, especially in summers,
and requires a lot of energy. This energy can be harvested from the sun to create sustainable and
cheap energy consumption. The solar industry is now getting long-deserved attention due to its
abundance and sustainability. Using this source, the working of an absorption cycle can be
revolutionized as it requires heat energy at the generator to produce cooling in the end. Absorption
cycles work using vapors that are formed by heating in generators, if these vapors can be formed
using solar collectors, they can replace nonrenewable energy sources such as electricity or LPG
and can give efficient results. Parabolic Trough Collectors paired with Libr-H20 solution are cheap
to construct and efficient enough to heat up the absorber-refrigerant solution in tubes by converting
solar energy into thermal energy and thus can act as a generator in the absorption cycle. The vapor
formed can further move in the cycle producing efficient cooling. The Solar collector constructed
is able to generate heat that separates the refrigerant from the solution in form of vapors and is able
to give a considerable drop in temperature at the end of a cycle. The Solar Vapor Absorption cycle
is an efficient and optimized way of refrigeration and can be used in places where electricity or
other energy sources are not available or highly expensive, especially in areas where there is an
abundance of solar radiation.
