Introduction
Joy of Giving program refers to helping
people in need. Donating needy people
with clothes, food, money, medicines etc.
We have enough money to eat, buy
clothes, buy accessories and most
important we have a home but there are
many poor around us who don’t have
money even to eat. The three basic needs
of human beings are food, clothes, and
shelter. If we see someone who doesn’t
have any one of these three, we should
help them. It’s our responsibility because
God has given us enough money not only
to save in lockers but also to help the
needy. There are many poor around us
who sleep on footpaths. They even don’t
have blankets to put on in winters and are
struggling with their lives. We cannot give
them home/ shelter as we don’t have that
much money but we all can donate them
food, clothes which are old and blankets so
that they will not shiver in winter.
Problem and cause of the
problem
The problems faced by rag pickers are
multifold. Most waste picking activity is
illegal or unpermitted, so waste pickers
commonly face harassment by police and
authorities. Also, there is widespread
public scorn against waste pickers due to
their poverty and perceived lack of
hygiene. Their livelihood due to acute
poverty or run away from home or no
education, or frustration or it is the only
self-employment etc. Once they are in the
profession of rag picking, they face still
more problems by the police, by the
public, by the middle men, by the other
rag pickers and so on.
Every city in the world is having to tackle
the issue of rising property prices and how
this affects the urban poor. But in some
Indian cities, the situation is becoming
desperate. In Mumbai, for example, over
50% of the population live in informal
settlements. As a result, they have little or
no access to basic services: water,
sanitation, power and waste management.
Objective
The main objective of the program is
making citizens aware of the Art of giving
back to society. It’s not always money that
helps; at times our little effort can change
lives.
Joy Of Living theme is aimed at giving a
better life to the people in need. On an
objective basis I helped Rag Pickers. We all
must have observed kids and youngsters in
dirty clothes, carrying a sack on their
shoulder, penetrating their hands deep in
the trash in search of plastics items,
spending 4/5 hours of the day, they collect
plastics worth Rs.130 to 150 a day, to our
surprise, this is the only source of their
income.
Accept this our objective is to propagate
the work via social media platforms to
motivate more and more people to
participate in this program.
Steps taken to achieve the
objective
To achieve the objective, I played an active
role in contributing to the less privileged
members of society, sharing my time,
money and skills. Landed helping hand to
the slum area children’s and showed them
ways they need to succeed
Spreaded knowledge about skin cancer
among the slum community which they
face on an alarming rate and told them
about ways to prevent it. The message also
went out to people to segregate the waste
in two divisions, and also educate them on
the advantages and disadvantages of the
same to the society. India with crores of
the population cannot live healthy until we
all think about it and take necessary action
for further improvement. F or example,
only 71.2% of urban households have
access to clean drinking water in their
house and one in five urban households do
not have their own toilet, and instead
depend on shared facilities. This also
explains why India accounts for nearly half
of the global population defecating in the
open.
I taught some basic subjects to backward
areas and slums for free of cost. They
don’t have money to spend on education
so they keep on spending their whole life
in illiteracy. I provided them pens, pencils,
eraser, and registers so that they should
not feel any burden on them.
I donated my old stuff which made them
happy and they gave blessings from their
hearts. If someone gives you blessings
then it means a lot (at least to me).
I provided them moral support, showing
heartfelt humility and respect made them
aware that someone really does care
about them and trying to improve their
condition. By providing them with the
opportunities to improve their condition
on their own would increase their self-
esteem and help them in overcoming
barriers they face every day.
Through the use of Social media and Social
Networking Sites like Facebook or twitter, I
raised my voice and created awareness
and get a helping hand; I connected to
various charity organizations and
community centres involved in helping the
needy people; buy products online from
websites that donate a portion of their
proceeds to charity that helps the poor
and needy people.
I provided financial assistance to the poor
that can help them solve the basic
problems of living. By providing money to
the poor and needy people, they can get
the essentials of living. I get associated
with charitable houses and donate money
there to help the needy.
I Provided nutritious meals to the poor and
needy people. Donated groceries that can
help end the hunger of poor and needy
people. They cannot even afford a single
time meal for themselves and their family,
so donating food made their stomach fill
and stay healthy. Rather than wasting food
or throwing it, it is better to give it to a
needy person.
In order to help the poor and needy, I
donated the old stuff from old clothes to
appliances, furniture and other materials.
Rummage through my belongings and
gave them away to the needy. Delving
through old stuff and donating does help
the poor people and makes a difference to
those who needs such stuff. Donating
clothes especially in winter season when
the weather is too cold is of great help to
the poor and needy people. Unneeded
stuff can be donated to brighten someone
else’s day.
Effectiveness of the project
I was successful in helping many poor
people and rag pickers by donating
important and useful things to them.
Helping the poor gave me happiness on
my face when I saw those smiling faces
who don’t have any hopes for future.
I started understanding the needs and
requirements of the poor and needy
people. Helping them overcome the
adversities of life. I learned that one can
help the poor and needy people by
understanding their wants, desires and
thoughts without diminishing their dignity
and helping them achieve those wants in a
respectable manner.
Conclusion
One should treat the poor and needy
people with respect and understanding.
This would make a huge difference in their
lives. Give them the same respect and
courtesy you would accord your friends
and family members. Respond them with a
kind word and a smile.
While the government has taken big
strides in improving the lives of the urban
poor, the private sector must also start
contributing. If companies can place
equally important value on profit, planet
and people, they could be change
enablers. It makes good business sense.
After all, some of India’s most vulnerable
people also happen to be one of the
biggest market segments.
if this is to happen, the government will
also have to create an enabling
environment, where businesses are
incentivized to invest in urban
infrastructure and services. After all, a
nation can truly progress if all the
stakeholders, including government,
businesses and citizens, join hands to
collectively work for the betterment of
society at large. Ambitious schemes such
as Smart Cities, AMRUT and Housing for All
are colossal steps for the betterment of
citizens, especially the urban poor. I
strongly believe that once primary needs
of bottom of the pyramid are taken care
of, they will be empowered to contribute
significantly to the country’s economic
progress.
Thank You !
