TABLE TENNIS
RULES OF PLAY
Table tennis is a sport and injuries are a possibility. The CE Sports fest program assumes no
responsibility for injuries; However, basic first aid will be available.
GENERAL INFORMATION
A. To participate in the sports festival, all participants must be:
A Civil Engineering student at EVSU-OC
B. All games will be played on EVSU-OC Campus. If a participant is not at the court and
ready to play at the scheduled game time, that game will be declared a forfeit. Players
are expected to report and check in at least 5 minutes before game time.
C. No Tobacco, food or beverages (except water with secure top) allowed.
D. Sportsmanship: All players are subject to sportsmanship rules as stated below. Each
player’s sportsmanship rating will be evaluated by the supervisor on duty. Supervisors
reserve the right to prevent players from advancing in the tournament if their
sportsmanship is deemed unacceptable.
In order to promote a fun and safe playing environment, participants and
spectators are expected to be civil towards one another and staff.
Any conduct judged by a sports fest staff member to be detrimental to the
participants, program, or any particular sports fest activity may result in removal
from a contest and/or further sanctions.
GAME BASICS
1. One (1) person makes up a team singles. Two (2) people make up a team in doubles.
2. Tournament format (whether single or double elimination) will be determined after
the captain’s meeting.
3. Games are self-officiated. A supervisor will present any rule discrepancies.
4. The supervisor reserves the right to enforce the replaying of a point. Points may also
be replayed if both players agree.
5. Players must report scores to the supervisor. The supervisor will update the bracket
accordingly.
EQUIPMENT
1. PICE EVSU-OC will provide all equipment needed to play.
2. Participants are permitted to use their own paddle, if they so choose.
THE GAME
1. Matches are best two-out-of-three games. Each game is to 11 points
2. A coin toss or paddle spin determines who is to serve. The winner may elect to
play at either end of the table, or to serve or receive. The loser is allowed the
alternate choice.
3. On the serve, the ball shall be placed in the palm of the flat hand about level with
playing surface. The ball should be tossed upwards, with no spin, and struck as it
is descending.
4. A serve that touches the net and proceeds over into the opposing team’s side is
considered a let. The server will then receive another attempt to serve. There is no
limitation to the number of lets permitted per service.
5. Each players serve two consecutive points then receives two consecutive points.
6. Players shall switch sides after each game. In the third game, the players shall
switch ends when someone reaches the score of five.
7. The player who served first in the game one shall receive the first serve in the
second game. The rotation continues at the start of each subsequent game.
8. If the score reaches 10-10, the service changes after each point until one player
gains a two-point advantage.
9. A shot is no good when it hits the side edge of the table below the white line.
SCORING
A point is awarded when a fault is committed by the opponent or the ball touches the
ground and is no longer in play. The edges of the table are part of the legal table surface,
but not the sides. It does not matter who is serving to receive a point. Whichever player
commits a fault or has the ball touch their side; the opposite is rewarded a point. A point
is awarded if:
a) The service is missed.
b) The service is not returned.
c) A shot goes into the net.
d) A shot goes off the table without touching the court.
e) A player moves the table, touches the net or touches the table with their free hand
during play.
f) An opponent obstructs the ball.
g) An opponent deliberately strikes the ball in succession.
h) An opponent strikes the ball with a side or the racket blade.
