1. In what century did electronic communication begin?
Electronic communication begins on 19th century. Electronic
communication is any communication based on electricity. The basis for this
wasn’t properly harnessed until both direct current and alternating current
electricity were mastered and popularized in the late 19th century. Thomas Edison
warned that direct current electricity was safer, and thus should form the basis of
a national power company. Unfortunately, alternating current electricity had better
transmission capabilities and although it is more dangerous, became the basis for
modern electrical power. These basic truths would ultimately form the foundation
for modern electronic communication.
2. Name the four main elements of a communication system and draw a
diagram that shows their relationship.
a. Transmitter,
b. Communications channel or Medium,
c. Receiver, and
d. Noise
3. List five types of media used for communication, and state which three are the
most commonly used.
a. Wire cable
b. Free space (radio and light)
c. Fiber-optic cable
d. Water
e. Earth
The wire cable, free space and fiber-optic cable are the most widely used.
4. Name the device used to convert an information signal to a signal compatible
with the medium over which it is being transmitted.
Modulator is the device used to convert an information signal to a signal
compatible with the medium over which it is being transmitted.
5. What piece of equipment acquires a signal from a communication medium
and recovers the original in formation signal?
The piece of equipment acquires a signal from a communication medium
and recovers the original in formation signal is demodulator. A demodulator is
an electronic circuit that is used to recover the information content from the
modulated carrier wave.
6. What is a transceiver?
Transceiver, an electronic device, derived from the combination of a radio
transmitter and a receiver. It transmits and receives radio waves using an antenna
for communication purposes. These two related functions are merged in a single
device to reduce manufacturing costs. Mostly, it is applied to wireless
communications devices and be used on transmitter or receiver devices in cable
or optical fiber systems.
7. What are two ways in which a communication medium can affect a
signal?
ANS. ATTENUATION AND NOISE
8. What is another name for communication medium?
ANS. COMMUNICATIONS CHANNEL
9. What is the name given to undesirable interference that is added to a
signal being transmitted?
ANS. NOISE
10. Name three common source of interference?
ANS. LIGHTNING, OUTER SPACE, AND MANUFACTURED DEVICES
11. What is the name given to the original information or intelligence signals
that are transmitted directly via a communication medium?
Ans. Baseband
12. Name the two forms in which intelligence signals can exist.
Ans. Analog and Digital
13. What is the given to one-way communication? Give 3 examples.
-The name given in one-way communication is "Simplex"
Examples: Televisions, Radio and Facsimile
14. What is the name given to simultaneous two-way communication? Give
3 examples.
Full Duplex
Examples: Telephone, Cell phone, and coreless internet phones.
15. What is the term used to describe two-way communication in which
each party take turns transmitting? Give 3 examples.
-Half duplex, Two-way radios, fax machines and modems
16. What type of electronic signals are continuously varying voice and
video signals?
-Analog
17. What are on/off intelligence signals called?
- Digital or Binary
18. How are voice and video signals transmitted digitally?
- The Analog get converted into binary signals which we call digital.
19. What terms are often used to refer to original voice video or data
signals?
Answer: information
20. What technique must sometimes we used to make an information
signal compatible with the medium over which it is being transmitted?
Answer: Modulation
21. What is the process of recovering an original signal called?
Answer: detection
22. What is a broadband signal?
Answer: Broadband signal is the transmission of wide bandwidth data over
a high-speed internet connection.
23. Named the process used to transmit two or more base band signals
simultaneously over a common medium?
Answer: Multiplexing
24. Name the technique used to extract multiple intelligence signals that
have been transmitted simultaneously over a single communication channel?
Answer: Demultiplexing
25. What is the name given to signals that travel through free space for
long distances?
Answer: wireless
