D. Summary of the Key Points
- The Red Cross Society founded by Jean Henri Daunant who came from a rich family. He
formed a society in order to help the people in need. This society was inspired by his passing
from the town of Solferino. A town where he witnessed one of the bloodiest battles of the
19th century. He saw the effects of battle-chaotic disorder, unspeakable despair, and misery of
every kind. Daunant felt he had responsibility towards humankind. He asked people to form
societies that would care for the wounded, societies that would tain volunteers wgo would
help in times of need. Many people joined this society which then called the international
Red Cross Society.
- Jesus Founded His Church at Peter’s confession in Caesarea Philippi. Jesus grounded her
permanently on the foundation of the apostles, to whom He has given the power to teach, to
sanctify and to rule the members of His church. Peter is the leader of the Apostles, the first
Head and the first Pope. Jesus conferred upon him the power of ruling His Church when He
entrusted to him the keys of the kingdom of Heaven.
- The Church is apostolic in three basic ways: first, because Jesus Christ grounded her
permanently on the foundation of the apostles, second, because she guards and transmits their
teaching and witness, and third, she continues to be instructed, sanctified and guided by the
apostles through their successors.
- Apostolic Succession refers to the order of succession carefully appointed by the Apostles in
order that the mission entrusted to them – to tend the hole flock, to shepherd the Church of
God – might be continued after their death.
- The sequence of the apostolic succession follows the apostles themselves, down to the
bishops of the present time. This is marked by:
*lawful, valid ordination conferred on bishops of the Church
*giving over or delegating directly the powers entrusted to the Apostles of ordaining, ruling
and teaching, which were given by Christ to the Apostles
*the historic and scriptural truth that the apostles did confer this power on others
*the intrinsic truth that the Church in all ages could not have preserved its identity and unity
as intended by Christ unless there were giving over of such power to others who would carry
on the work of Christ’s Church
*the Pope, who is the successor of St. Peter in Rome
- The Pope is Peter’s successor. He is the Roman Pontiff, the Perpetual and visible source and
foundation of the unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful. The
Pope, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full,
supreme and universal power over the whole Church.
- Suggestions to make the responsibility of loving Jesus easier:
1. Be aware of your task
2. Accept your task and love it
3. Pray for the grace to do your task well
4. Plan your task
5. Execute your plan
6. Offer your work to God
7. Read the Bible and listen to the Gospel
- An example of a man who did his tasks with care is St. John Baptist de la Salle.
