I. LEARNING SKILLS
MELC: Compare and contrast the nuances of varied online platforms, sites, and content to best achieve specific class
objectives or address situational challenges (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-la-b-1)

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) deals with the use of different communication technologies
such as mobile phones, telephone, internet, etc., to locate, save, send, and edit information.

THE CURRENT STATE OF ICT

WEB 1.0
It is a term coined to differentiate the first stage of the World Wide Web (WWW) in comparison with the present stage
of the internet technology. It is called “read only web” since there was no user interaction. Most of the web pages are static
(stationary page or flat page) meaning the page cannot be manipulated by the user. The feedback mechanism was thru
private email and direct comment was not available.

WEB 2.0
The term Web 2.0 or Dynamic Page is a term coined by Darci DiNucci on January 1999. It was first used around the year
2004. This was the beginning of the wide use and popularity of the social media. The users can interact, contribute and create
their own internet space and content. Web 2.0 is the advent of the “read and write web”. Examples of Web 2.0 pages are
Wikipedia (Information and Encyclopedia), YouTube (video sharing), and Facebook (social media).
Features of Web 2.0
1. Folksonomy – allows users to categorize and classify/arrange information using freely chosen words (e.g., tagging).
2. Rich User Experience – content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s input.
3. User Participation – others are able to place a content of their own by means of comments, reviews, and evaluation.
Some websites allow readers to comment on an article, participate in a poll, or review a specific product.
4. Long Tail – services that are offered on demand rather than on a one-time purchase.
5. Software as a Service – users will subscribe to a software only when needed rather than purchasing them.
6. Mass Participation – diverse information sharing through universal web access.

WEB 3.0
It is also referred by web experts as semantic web or data driven web content and response. The term was coined by
the inventor of the WWW, Tim Berners-Lee. According to the W3C, “The semantic web provides a common framework that
allows data to be shared and reused across application, enterprise, and community boundaries.” The aim of Web 3.0 is to
have machines (or servers) understand the user’s preferences to be able to deliver web content specifically targeting the
user.
Challenges of Web 3.0
1. Compatibility 2. Security 3. Vastness 4. Vagueness 5. Logic

TRENDS IN ICT
Technological Convergence
The smartphone and the internet are examples of technological convergence. Technological convergence is an evolution
of technological developments that merge into a new system bringing together different types of applications and media.

Social Media
It is a website, application, or online channel that enables web users to create, co-create, discuss, modify, and
exchange user-generated content. There are six types of social media:
1
a. Social Networks – allows you to connect with other people with the same interests or background. Examples are
Google+ and Facebook.
b. Bookmarking Sites – allows you to store and manage links to various websites and resources. Examples are
StumbleUpon and Pinterest.
c. Social News – allows users to post their own news items or links to other news sources. They are also capable of voting
on these news articles of the website. Examples are reddit and Digg.
d. Media Sharing – allows you to upload and share media content like images, music, and video. Examples are Flicker,
YouTube, and Instagram.
e. Microblogging – these are sites that focus on short updates from the user. Examples are Twitter and Plurk.
f. Blogs and Forums – allows users to post their content. Other users are able to comment on the said topic. There are
several free blogging platforms like Blogger, WordPres, and Tumblr. On the other hand, forums are typically part of a
certain website or web service.

Mobile Technologies
Mobile devices use different operating systems:
a. iOS – used in Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad
b. Android – an open-source operating system developed by Google.
c. Blackberry OS – used in Blackberry devices
d. Windows Phone OS - a closed source and proprietary operating system developed by Microsoft.
e. Symbian – the original smartphone OS; used by Nokia devices.
f. WebOS – originally used for smartphones; now used for Smart TVs
g. Windows Mobile – developed by Microsoft for smartphones

Assistive Media
It is a non-profit service founded in 1996 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA by David H. Erdody. It is designed to help
people who have visual and reading impairments. A database of audio recordings is used to read to the user.

ONLINE SYSTEMS, FUNCTIONS, AND PLATFORMS

Online platforms can be overwhelming due to the number of choices. They can be categorized as follows:
1. Social Media 3. Communication Services 5. Advertising Platforms
2. Search Engines 4. Payment Systems 6. Creative Content Outlets
The online platform in the use of ICT makes it easier for users to interact, to collect, and use the data from the users’
interactions for their own needs. Following are some of the online platforms and applications that you can use to create
online presentation, web page, newsletter, infographics, music, video, and other multimedia contents:
Presentation tools Music production
Newsletter, ICT Content Platforms Survey and forms
Photo editing tools ICT projects and content publishing and uploading

Photo uploading and hosting tools Content Management System platform
Online collaborative tools File Management platforms
Cloud computing Curating tools
Blog tools Web design platforms
