What
is art?

ART

Art is a diverse range of human

activity, and resulting product, that
involves creative or imaginative talent
expressive of technical
proficiency, beauty, emotional power,
or conceptual ideas.
ART

There is no generally agreed definition

of what constitutes art, and its
interpretation has varied greatly
throughout history and across cultures.
The three classical branches of visual
art are painting, sculpture,
and architecture.
ART

Theatre, dance, and other performing arts,

as well as literature, music, film and other
media such as interactive media, are
included in a broader definition of the arts.
Until the 17th century, art referred to any
skill or mastery and was not differentiated
from crafts or sciences.
ART

In modern usage after the 17th

century, where aesthetic
considerations are paramount, the fine
arts are separated and distinguished
from acquired skills in general, such as
the decorative or applied arts.
ART

The nature of art and related concepts,

such as creativity and interpretation, are
explored in a branch of philosophy
known as aesthetics. The
resulting artworks are studied in the
professional fields of art criticism and
the history of art.

the 3
definition

ART

The definition of art has

generally fallen into three
categories: representation,
expression, and form.
ART

The term "representation" suggests a

type of description or portrayal of
someone or something. In the visual
arts this implies that the art object depicts
something other than or outside itself. In
some cases the mode of representation is
iconic and relies on ideas or symbols.
ART

Common examples of this type of art

include portraits, traditional
landscapes, paintings of everyday
scenes, historical or mythological
painting, still life’s and of course
various types of figurative and
equestrian statue.
ART

Art is an expression of our thoughts,

emotions, intuitions, and desires, but it is
even more personal than that: it's about
sharing the way we experience the world,
which for many is an extension of
personality. It is the communication of
intimate concepts that cannot be faithfully
portrayed by words alone.
ART

Form is one of the elements of visual art

which pertains to the way that a shape or
physical configuration occupies space.
For a three-dimensional work of art like a
sculpture or work of architecture, form is the
shape, structure, and arrangement of
components like length, width, and depth of
a shape.
ART

An example of form is the

circular shape of an apple.
An example of form is a job
application. The shape and
structure of an object.

ART

To express emotions-thoughts
Apart from emotions and thoughts, artists
tend to use visuals to show their beliefs,
values, and memories.
Painting helps a lot of artists get away from
the real world and get through different
phases of life.
ART
Artists also create art for a variety of other specific
reasons, including:
• To demonstrate technical expertise with a medium.
• Celebrating the aesthetics of common, ordinary and
mundane objects.
• Depict the beauty in nature.
• Explore elements of art – line, shape, space, color, etc.
• Innovation and breaking rules. e
MODERN ART

Modern art is period of revolution and change in art.

The artists represent the world they know in unique
ways that were never seen before by the public. It
introduced variety of new art styles (traditional to
future innovations). At first, Europe was the birthplace
for these new styles— styles that greatly influenced
the art created later in America.
MODERN ART
Styles surrounds us in our
daily lives. We can easily
identify specific styles of cars,
kinds of stores, and brand
names of different goods. We
known Adidas from Nike, SM
malls from Ayala malls, or a
Honda from Volkswagen.
MODERN ART
In art, people note personal
styles of specific artists—
‘’That’s a Picasso,’’ ‘’That’s an
Anita Magsaysay-Ho’’—after
seeing a range of their works.
Such recognition is based
primarily on differentiation.
Below are the paintings of Anita
Two Women, 1992 by Anita
Magsaysay-Ho showing her Magsaysay-Ho
personal style.
MODERN ART
Artists from their style within a
particular time and place. Artists
working in the same culture during
the same time often have features
in common— a style shared by a
particular group of like minded
artists. A familiarity with these
styles can help us situate art and Two Women Fish Vendors, by Anita
Magsaysay-Ho
artists that are new to us, which
often helps with understanding.
MODERN ART

Modern art includes artistic work

produced during the period extending
roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and
denotes the styles and philosophies of the art
produced during that era. The term is usually
associated with art in which the traditions of
the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of
experimentation.

IMPRESSIONISM
In 1874, a group of artists held an exhibition in
Paris. One of these artists was Claude Monet,
who exhibited a painting entitled Impressions,
Sunrise. The movement, called impressionism,
was described as an art style that tried to capture
an impression of what the eye sees at a given
moment and the effect of sunlight on the subject.

3. Impressionists also prefer painting
outdoors because they believe that the
color of shade is influenced by the
surrounding colors, and therefore, must
shine and filter through the scene and
flood onto the objects in the painting.
IMPRESSIONISM
In “Gare Saint Lazare” French
artist Claude Monet went out to
paint a train station in Paris. It
showed the effect of light streaming
through the glass roof of the station
onto the clouds of stream in the
painting. He also showed how
shapes of people and engines
stood out in the confusion of smoke
and noise of the station. He created

The famous counterpart artists of impressionism in the
Philippines:
Impressionism lasted some 15 years in its purest form in
Europe, but it profoundly influenced all paintings that
followed worldwide. Many Filipino artists picked up style of
the impressionists as early as when they first became
popular in Europe. Well-known Filipinos who were
influenced by impressionism include Juan Luna and
Maestro Fernando Amorsolo.

Despite being identified as master of

hand at impressionism. In the portrait
of his son, the three- year– old

colored dabs on the cheeks, the intent
to create a quick impression of a

of painting outdoors and reflected

EXPRESSIONISM
EXPRESSIONISM

At the beginning of the 20th century, some artists who

have been connected with impressionism began to find
fault with it. They felt that this style sacrificed too much
by trying to capture the momentary effects of sunlight on
forms and colors. They felt that art should present a
more personal, expressive view of life. In Germany,
the view was eagerly accepted by several groups of
artists. The art movement in which artworks
conveyed strong feelings was called expressionism.
EXPRESSIONISM

Expressionism refers to art in

which the image of reality is
distorted in order to make it
expressive of the artist's inner
feelings or ideas.
EXPRESSIONISM
Characteristics of expressionism

They used jagged, distorted lines;

rough, rapid brushwork; and
jarring colors to depict urban street
scenes and other contemporary
subjects in crowded, agitated
compositions notable for their
instability and their emotionally
charged atmosphere
EXPRESSIONISM
The famous proponents of
expressionism:
1. Edvard Munch—Munch
was the best known forerunner
of expressionism. His early life
was tortured by sickness,
death, insanity, unhappy love
affairs, and guilt— a classic
way to understand his
paintings.

Norwegian painter. His
best known work, The
Scream (1893), has
become an iconic
image of the art world.

Pablo Picasso was

the first to use such

was the leader of a
new movement in
art called cubism.

Pablo Picasso painted the
picture in 1937 and used

The two founders of cubism, Pablo

based on geometric shapes—the

time, a shift in focus from subject matter
to the “abstract” properties of line,

The distinctive themes and style that made use of
the geometric fragmentation technique in the work
of early Filipino cubists contributed significantly to
the introduction of modern art in the Philippines.
Some of these artists were Vicente Manansala,
Cesar Legaspi, Cenon Rivera.

group of artists expressed their disillusionment in their art. It is
known as dada, the movement got its name from a nonsense

Throughout its brief lifespan of six years, dada seemed
nonsensical, but it had a no-nonsense aim. It protested the
