The document discusses Rizal and his efforts to reconstruct Philippine history. It notes that as ilustrados brought up in ignorance of the past due to lack of a stable, continuous history, Rizal sought to establish a flourishing pre-Spanish civilization and undo the discontinuities of colonial society. The document asks how this develops nationalism and if Rizal demonstrated popular nationalism through his works, to which it answers that his works rekindled Philippine nationalism by advocating for individual rights, independence and making the Philippines a Spanish province as part of reforms. SUMMARY (seven [7] sentences MAX)

Ilustrados from Rizal to this day have lamented this apparent distortion of the
Filipino mind. Born and brought up in ignorance of our past, lacking an
authoritative voice to speak of what we neither saw nor studied, Rizal could not
have better expressed the anxiety of being left to one's own wits, unanchored in a
stable past. The lack of a continuous, uninterrupted history of Filipino
consciousness lay behind the ilustrado nostalgia for lost origins. Rizal's efforts to
reconstruct the history of a flourishing, pre-Spanish civilization that entered into a
decline can be viewed as an attempt to reconstitute the unity of Philippine history,
to bring under the sway of the ilustrado mind the discontinuities and differences that
characterized colonial society. Ironically, the demand for order and coherence led to
Rizal and The Underside of Philippine History

a critique not only of the Spaniards but also of the ilustrados ancestors who,
admitted Rizal, had lost their heritage because they had hastened to abandon what
( The Fall in Ilustrado consciousness )

was theirs to take up what was new. " Ignorance and naivete are the familiar
explanations for what appears to have been the absence of fixed boundaries in the
conceptual world of the carly Filipinos. The nuous, uninterrupted history of Filipino
consciousness lies behind the ilustrado nostalgia for lost origins.

How does this develop and/or promote nationalism to you?

Did Rizal demonstrate popular nationalism through his works? Justify your answer.

His works rekindled Philippine nationalism.

The majority of his publications, including essays and editorials, focused on
individual rights and independence, particularly for Filipinos. He even advocated
for the Philippines to become a province of Spain as part of his reforms.

How will the study of our national history affect your actions in the present?

History studies allow us to examine and comprehend how individuals and

communities behaved. For example, we may assess war even while a country is at
peace by looking back at earlier occurrences. History supplies us with information
that we may use to develop rules or ideas about many elements of society.
