What I Need to Know

Listening comprehension is one of the basic

skills to be developed to understand, retell, and
discuss what is heard. Certain strategies are
applied to be able to connect your prior ideas and
post ideas in a particular subject.

You must know how to listen carefully as it

helps you weigh points well and give a relevant
response. It is also a great way to develop one's
critical thinking skills as your mind is trained to dig
deeper information.

In this module, you are expected to:

Use different listening strategies based on purpose, familiarity with the topic and levels
of difficulty of simple informative and short narrative texts.

Coronavirus Disease (COVID 19)

In December 2019, there was a cluster of pneumonia cases in the city of Wuhan in China,
some of the early cases had reported visiting or working in a seafood and live animal market
in Wuhan. Investigations found that the disease was caused by newly discovered
coronavirus. The disease was subsequently named COVID 19. It spreads within China and
to the rest of the world.
On 30 January 2020, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak, a public health
emergency of international concern. In this video, we’ll take a quick look of what is currently
2
known as COVID 19. Keep in mind, that this is a new disease and what’s known is rapidly
evolving and might change in the future.
So, what is a coronavirus? Coronaviruses are large group of viruses. They consist of a
core of genetic material surrounded by a lipid envelope with protein spikes. This gives it the
appearance of a crown, crown in Latin is called corona, and that’s how these viruses get their
name. There are different types of coronaviruses that cause illness in animals and humans,
in humans coronaviruses can cause respiratory infection ranging from the common cold to
more severe diseases, these include the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus first
identified in China in 2003 the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus that was first
identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012 and sars cov 2, the name of the virus that causes covid 19
that was first reported in December 2019.
So, where did this new virus come from? It’s known that coronaviruses circulate in a
range of animals, sometimes these viruses can make the jump from animals to humans, and
this is called a spill-over and could be due to a range of factors such as mutations of the virus
or increased contacts between humans and animals. For example, MERS- COV is known to
be transmitted from camels and SARS COV from civet cat. The animal reservoir of the new
coronavirus is not known yet.
How does the disease spread? The disease can spread from person to person through
droplets when an infected person releases those droplets through coughing, talking or
sneezing for example when close to another person, it can also spread when infected droplets
land on objects and when another person touches them and then touches their eyes, nose
or mouth.
What are the symptoms? The incubation period which is the time taken from exposure
to the virus and development of symptoms is on average five to six days but can range from
1 to 14 days. There can be a range of symptoms, from very mild to severe. Some people may
not develop symptoms. Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms
such as cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. Some people reported loss of their sense
of taste or smell and some may develop a skin rash.
How can we tell whether someone is infected? The infection is commonly diagnosed
by a test called reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction generally known as PCR.
This test identifies the virus based on its genetic fingerprint. There is also a blood test that
can check the anti-bodies against the virus which may show that someone was infected in
the past.
How is it treated? The treatment for COVID 19 is mainly supportive care medicines
against the virus are currently under investigation. How do we prevent transmission of the
virus? There are a number of ways of effective ways to prevent the spread of the disease.
These include covering your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a flexed elbow
or tissue and throwing the tissue in a closed bin immediately after use. Wash hands regularly
with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub, maintaining at least one meter distance
from people and the appropriate use of mask and personal protective equipment especially
in health settings. It’s important to stay home if you’re feeling unwell and to call a hotline or
your medical professional but if you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical
care early and share your travel history or contact with someone unwell with healthcare
provider. In some areas, governments have implemented specific physical and social
distancing measures to prevent the spread of the outbreak. It’s important to follow their
advice. Vaccines to prevent COVID 19 are currently under development and scientists around
the world are working hard to make this happen. That’s a quick look at this emerging
infectious disease.

What is it
Basic steps in listening effectively

Before listening
1. Connect – Think what you already know about the topic.
2. Predict - Make guesses what you may learn as you listen. Guessing helps the brain
to focus.
3. Talk About New Words- Talk about the words (pre-assigned words) with a friend or
listen to a free audio dictionary for the meaning.

During listening
4. Listen for Answers - As you listen, answer the questions you have. Looking for
answers gives you reason to listen and makes your mind active and alert
5. Take Notes -Write notes that help you remember ideas. You can try any imaginative
ways to take down notes.
6. Re listen - When ideas are hard and you found it boring, re listen to it.
After listening
7. Respond - Write your reaction whether you agree or disagree.
8. Summarize - Read the notes you have taken while listening.
9. Extend - Read and listen to other sources about the topic.

4
Strategies for effective listening

1. Be Attentive. Shut off your smartphone, close your door, and move away from the
computer screen.
2. Ask Questions. Show your desire to understand by asking question.
3. Use Body Language: Face-to-face you can convey you are listening by nodding, smiling,
and maintaining eye contact.
4. Empathize. Seek first to understand than to be understood. Set aside filters and just
listen.
5. Take notes. Not only will note taking reinforce what’s being said, but also it provides you
with a permanent record to refer back to.

The Turtle and the Monkey

One day, Pagong, the turtle, Matching, the monkey, was walking by the river. Then,
Matching saw a floating banana tree, “Look, a banana tree, let’s go get it Pagong”! Since
Matching was the one that saw the tree first, Matching insisted that he will take home the
trunk that already had some leaves thinking that it will soon bear fruits. While Pagong, he
was given the part with the roots. They parted ways and planted the banana trees that they
owned. Pagong planted his near the riverbank while Matching planted his in the woods.
Every day, they water the plants. Days went by, Matching’s plant died. The leaves withered
and the trunk decayed. Meanwhile, Pagong’s plant slowly grew leaves and even bigger until
it bore fruit. Matching came to Pagong and he wept, “Pagong, my plant died”. Pagong kindly
answered, “Oh, poor Matching, don’t be sad. Look at my plant, it has become a fruitful banana
tree. If you help me gather the fruit, I will share my harvest with you”. “Wow, really? Let me
climb the tree for you then”. Matching answered excitedly. Once Matching reached the top of
the tree, he greedily ate all the bananas. Pagong shouted, “Hey, Matching, give me some”!
The naughty Matching answered, “No chance, it is all mine now”! Pagong was so angry, he
began to stick many thorns on the tree trunk. After Matching felt full, Matching went down the
tree. Not long after, he screamed in pain, “Ouch, ouch, there’s so many thorns. Pagong, you
will pay for this”! Matching sat on the top of the coconut shell to remove the thorns. Then, the
next thing he knew, Pagong bit his tail then Pagong hid under the coconut shell. In a rage,
Matching lifted the coconut shell, “You will pay for what you have done to me, I will cook you
now”. Pagong acted cool sounds like a plan. “When you cook me, I will turn red and be more
attractive”. Matching replied, ‘Ha, I know! What if I just throw you in the river and let you
drowned there.” Pagong pretended to be scared. “No, not the river, please, I will drown there.”
Matching threw Pagong into the river with vengeance. Once Pagong hit the water, he
laughed, “Matching, too slow-minded, did you not know I live in water? Ha, ha, ha, ha,”
Matching scratched his head in confusion and immediately regretted all his actions.

My Final Farewell
And when the dark night wraps the graveyard around
With only the dead in their vigil to see
Farewell, dear Fatherland, clime of the sun caress'd
Break not my repose or the mystery profound
Pearl of the Orient seas, our Eden lost!,
And perchance thou mayst hear a sad hymn resound
Gladly now I go to give thee this faded life's best,
'T is I, O my country, raising a song unto thee.
And were it brighter, fresher, or more blest
Still would I give it thee, nor count the cost.
And even my grave is remembered no more
Unmark'd by never a cross nor a stone
On the field of battle, 'mid the frenzy of fight,
Let the plow sweep through it, the spade turn it o'er
Others have given their lives, without doubt or heed;
That my ashes may carpet earthly floor,
The place matters not-cypress or laurel or lily white,
Before into nothingness at last they are blown.
Scaffold or open plain, combat or martyrdom's plight, T
is ever the same, to serve our home and country's
Then will oblivion bring to me no care
need.
As over thy vales and plains I sweep;
Throbbing and cleansed in thy space and air
I die just when I see the dawn break,
With color and light, with song and lament I fare,
Through the gloom of night, to herald the day;
Ever repeating the faith that I keep.
And if color is lacking my blood thou shalt take,
Pour'd out at need for thy dear sake
My Fatherland ador'd, that sadness to my sorrow
To dye with its crimson the waking ray.
lends
Beloved Filipinas, hear now my last good-by!
My dreams, when life first opened to me,
I give thee all: parents and kindred and friends
My dreams, when the hopes of youth beat high,
For I go where no slave before the oppressor bends,
Were to see thy lov'd face, O gem of the Orient sea
Where faith can never kill, and God reigns e'er on
From gloom and grief, from care and sorrow free; No
high!
blush on thy brow, no tear in thine eye.
Farewell to you all, from my soul torn away,
Dream of my life, my living and burning desire, All
Friends of my childhood in the home dispossessed !
hail ! cries the soul that is now to take flight; All
Give thanks that I rest from the wearisome day !
hail ! And sweet it is for thee to expire ; Farewell to thee, too, sweet friend that lightened my
To die for thy sake, that thou mayst aspire; And way;
sleep in thy bosom eternity's long night. Beloved creatures all, farewell! In death there is rest!
If over my grave some day thou seest grow,
In the grassy sod, a humble flower,
Draw it to thy lips and kiss my soul so,
While I may feel on my brow in the cold tomb below
The touch of thy tenderness, thy breath's warm
power.

Let the moon beam over me soft and serene,

Let the dawn shed over me its radiant flashes,
Let the wind with sad lament over me keen ;
And if on my cross a bird should be seen,
Let it trill there its hymn of peace to my ashes.
Let the sun draw the vapors up to the sky,
And heavenward in purity bear my tardy protest
Let some kind soul o 'er my untimely fate sigh,
And in the still evening a prayer be lifted on high
From thee, 0 my country, that in God I may rest.
(This is the 1911 translation by Charles Derbyshire of
the Spanish original of José Rizal's poem, Mi Ultimo
Pray for all those that hapless have died,
Adiós)
For all who have suffered the unmeasur'd pain; For
our mothers that bitterly their woes have cried,
For widows and orphans, for captives by torture tried
And then for thyself that redemption thou mayst gain.
