OBJECTIVES
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

General Objective

● Implement knowledge about TFlat English pronunciation App and thus

improve the quality of pronunciation in the students of the third quarter of the
Bachelor Degree in English.

Specific Objective

● Differentiate double vowel sounds

● Use of TFlat English App to pronounce correctly different words

INTRODUCTION

For many Reasons that English teachers think that the pronunciation should be the
last in the English class, maybe they think that literature, grammar, writing,
listening, etc. Should be their priorities or the University could give them
instructions about this subject for it will be your priorities. As a result, many English
teachers and many students are thinking that pronunciation is not important. But, if
students need speaking or understanding it is so difficult for them, because the
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

pronunciation is key for understanding the language English. The University,

professors and students should think about that. So, it is important that people at
university understand that the time when students only needed writing and reading
ability in English are past.

Students feel good when they learn a lot of vocabulary or grammar, but if their
pronunciation is bad, it would be difficult for people to understand them or they
understand people. The University should give the professors necessary tools to
teach students how to communicate successfully in English. Especially apps that
can help students in their pronunciation, for example TFlat English pronunciation,
because this app has all necessary for understanding the pronunciation. but there
are a lot of different apps that the professor can use to teach students every day.
On the other hand, apps are necessary, because technology is an advantage that
we should use every day in learning English.

University should be implementing a test to new English learners, because

professors would have knowledge about students when enter to university and
professors can help students instantly

CHAPTER I.

Pronunciation Ability……………………………………………………..

DEFINITION. Pronunciation is the way in which a language is spoken; the way in

which a word is pronounced; the way a person speaks the words of language
(Hornby in Astuti 2014). That is why when a person mispronounces a word, it will
change the meaning and make other people or the listener confused.

As English learners who speak English as a foreign language, pronunciation is

something important to learn. Pronunciation teaching not only makes students
aware of different sounds and sound features, but also improves their speaking.
Concentrating on sounds, showing where they are made in mouth, making the
students aware of where words should be stressed all these things give them extra
information about spoken English and help the students achieve the goal (Harmer,
2001:183). he also added that “Being made aware of pronunciation issues will be
of immense benefit not only their own production but also to their own
understanding of spoken English”.

The Correlation between…., Feni Andriyani, FKIP UMP, 2017

Importance of pronunciation ability……………………………………

Pronunciation plays an important role in English speaking to express

our ideas. English is not native language for everyone and the
pronunciation of the native English speaker is different from other
people. The pronunciation of English speakers is wonderful because
their pronunciation leaves an impact on us and it is essential to the
best comprehension. However, the people that are not native
speakers of English have problems with pronunciation. They don’t
learn the best way and they think the pronunciation is not essential
for them and they think the pronunciation is less important than
grammar and vocabulary, but the pronunciation is very important
from the best comprehension and communication. For example, if
someone pronounces the words fog, fox, see, she, sick and six with
relatively no differences and could create confusion to the listener. In
conclusion, pronunciation is more important than other assignments
and it needs practice every day.

C. Keys to pronunciation
c.1. Intonation: Describes how the voice rises and falls in speech.
The three main patterns of intonation in English are:

c.1.1 Falling intonation describes how the voice falls on the final
stressed syllable of a phrase or a group of words. A falling intonation
is very common in wh-questions.
Example:
Where’s the nearest post-office?

We also use falling intonation when we say something definite, or

when we want to be very clear about something:
Example:
I think we are completely lost.

c.1.2 Rising intonation describes how the voice rises at the end of a
sentence. Rising intonation is common in yes-no questions:
Example:
I hear the Health Center is expanding. So, is that the new doctor?

c.1.3 Fall-rise intonation describes how the voice falls and then rises.
We use fall-rise intonation at the end of statements when we want to
say that we are not sure, or when we may have more to add:
Example:
I don't support any football team at the moment. (but I may change
my mind in future).

We use fall-rise intonation with questions, especially when we

request information or invite somebody to do or to have something.
The intonation pattern makes the questions sound more polite:
Example:
Is this your camera?

c. 2. Fluency: Fluency (also called volubility and eloquence) is the

property of a person or of a system that delivers information quickly
and with expertise.
c. 3. Enjoy: Enjoying what you are doing is the key to success
because without a doubt you will put everything in you to achieve
your goals

c. 4. Practice: Practice makes perfect because it is essential for

learning to be effective.

c. 5. Fonetic: Phonetics is a branch of linguistics that studies how

people produce and perceive sounds or, in the case of sign
languages, the equivalent aspects of signs. Phoneticians, linguists
who specialize in phonetics, study the physical properties of speech.
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

The field of phonetics is traditionally divided into three sub disciplines

based on the research questions involved, such as how humans plan
and execute movements to produce speech (articulatory phonetics),
how various movements affect the properties of the resulting sound
(acoustic phonetics) , or how humans convert sound waves into
linguistic information (auditory phonetics).

D. Pronunciation rules

DEFINITION. 10 rules that will give your English pronunciation a

huge boost!

1. Vowel + single consonant at the end = short vowel sound

Examples of words that follow this rule include:

cut (/kʌt/)
tap (/tæp/)
big (/bɪɡ/)

2. Vowel + consonant + e = long vowel sound

The e is silent at the end of these words. A lot of these are diphthong (gliding)
sounds and include:

care (/keə/)
bike (/baɪk/)
tape (/teɪp/)

3. Vowel + double consonant after = short vowel sound

When a vowel is followed by two consonants that are the same, the vowel is
usually a short sound. Examples of these kinds of words include:

hitter (/ˈhɪt.ə/)
muffin (/ˈmʌf.ɪn/)
banner (/ˈbæn.ə/)

4. Vowel + vowel = single long vowel

Quite often when we have two vowels next to each other we ignore the second
vowel and draw the first vowel out longer. Examples include:

rain (/reɪn/)
treat (/triːt/)
you (/juː/)
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

Diphthongs are the exception. In these cases we say both vowels but they blend
together into a single syllable.

5. Regular verb (-ed ending) = 3 different pronunciations

With regular simple past tense verbs, the pronunciation of -ed endings changes
depending on the final sound of the verb (before the ed).

If it ends in d or t then the ed is pronounced /ɪd/

hunted (/ˈhʌnt.ɪd/)
winded (/ˈwɪnd.ɪd/)
haunted (/ˈhɔːnt.ɪd/

It it ends in a voiced sound then the ed is pronounced /d/

hugged (/hʌgd/)
fried (/fraɪd/)
robbed (/rɒbd/)

If it ends in a voiceless sound then the ed is pronounced /t/

talked (/tɔːkt/)
tapped (/tæpt/)
missed (/mɪst/)

6. g + e, i, y = soft g sound

If our g is followed by these sounds then we usually pronounce it as a soft g:

gentleman (/ˈdʒen.təl.mən/)
giant (/ˈdʒaɪ.ənt/)
gym (/dʒɪm/)g + a, o, u = hard g sound

If the g is followed by these sounds then we usually pronounce it as a hard g:

game (/ɡeɪm/)
gone (/ɡɒn/)
gun (/ɡʌn/)

g + h = f sound

If we encounter gh and it isn’t at the beginning of a word then we usually

pronounce it as a /f/ sound. This doesn’t apply when it’s at the start of the word
(e.g. ghost) in this case it is usually treated as a hard g:
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

laugh (/lɑːf)
rough (/rʌf)
cough (/kɒf/)

7. Compound noun = stress on the first syllable

When we combine more than one word into a single noun (compound noun), we
tend to put the stress on the first syllable of the first word.

cowboy (/ˈkaʊ.bɔɪ/)
newspaper (/ˈnjuːzˌpeɪ.pə)
friendship (/ˈfrend.ʃɪp)

8. r + consonant after = silent r

In British English, if we have an r followed by a consonant then we usually silence

the r and just lengthen the vowel before it.

Be aware that this rule can be different in other countries (e.g. American English):

heard (/hɜːd/)
pardon (/ˈpɑː.dən/)
lord (/lɔːd/)

9. –s / –es ending = 3 different pronunciations

In a similar way to our –ed endings, there are 3 different ways to pronounce –s / –
es endings, depending on the ending of the word (before the –s / –es).

If it ends in a /s/, /z/, /ʧ/, /ʤ/, /ʃ/ or /ʒ/ sound then the s / es is pronounced /ɪz/:

churches (/ˈʧɜːʧ.ɪz/)
misses (/ˈmɪs.ɪz/)
causes (/ˈkɔːz.ɪz/)

It it ends in a voiced sound then the s / es is pronounced /z/

bugs (/bʌgz/)
says (/sɛz/)
mends (/mɛndz/

If it ends in a voiceless sound then the s / es is pronounced /s/

hits (/hɪts/)
taps (/tæps/)
racks (/ræks/)
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

oo + k = /ʊ/

10. For the majority of words with oo, we pronounce this as /uː/:

mood (/muːd/)
boom (/buːm)
room (/ruːm/)

However, when oo is followed by a k, it takes a shortened /ʊ/ sound:

look (/lʊk/)
took (/tʊk/)
book (/bʊk/)

CHAPTER II. Causative factors currently affecting the learning of the

pronunciation
DEFINITION.

A. Internal factors
Acquiring correct second language pronunciation is an indispensable part of the
language learning process. It plays a substantial role in enhancing the
communicative competence and performance of second language learners. The
learning of pronunciation is a very sensitive and complicated aspect of the English
language classroom. However, English language learners are not equally good in
learning pronunciation. It is the most important than external ones so if a student
does not have the attraction to learn to pronounce will never succeed or will only
do it superficially.

a.1 Fear of being wrong

Fear is linked with correction and negative evaluation and this is also much
influenced by students‟ fear of being laughed at by other students or being
criticized by the teacher; as a result, students commonly stop participating in the
speaking activity (Sultana & Jamin 2021). Additionally, this is one of the main
factors that exist and the fear of making mistakes in front of people, in public or
with classmates or another person causes a feeling of vulnerability. The best way
you have to know in order to learn the right way to say things is by making
mistakes.

Besides, the fear of not being understood arises because you are aware of the lack
of fluency in your speech. The effort of pronouncing in the best way a language
that you do not master makes you unable to focus on what you want to say. You
focus more on how you can say it.

a.2 Study habits

Study habits here refer to those actions performed by the students to acquire and
learn English inside and outside the classroom (Ahmed 2018). In this manner,
having a good English pronunciation is an important part of learning any language.
The tricky part of achieving this is that it's not just a matter of acquiring the
knowledge, but a physical skill that you have to practice on a regular basis.
Thence, separate the words into syllables, watch videos every day, pay attention to
intonation and accents, read aloud, imitate other people is also good, speak slowly
all this will help improve English pronunciation.
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

a.3 Feelings and emotions

Students have a positive impact on academic performance conditions. Conversely,

negative emotions such as hopelessness and boredom are set to reduce
motivation and easy processing of information, implying a negative effect on
performance (Universidad de Zulia 2020). Thereby, emotional influence on
students’ mental and physical states is also underlined by some scholars as an
important factor in learning. As a result, emotions affecting mental state can cause
some behavioral changes often expressed in communication. For this reason, that
shows a strong connection between emotional state and learning abilities.

However, emotions and feelings arise from muscular movements at the moment of
expressing yourself, they are reflected, which modifies the subject's tone of voice.
Thus, we observe that, when we pronounce some words, they are accompanied by
different emotions. Through, emotions are a transmission and unconscious
process that acts as a synchronicity and part of our daily life. Through different
mechanisms, individuals develop in different emotional states to tune in through
the mimicry of facial expression. a smile, an expression of anger or a few tears. It
is enough to see someone express an emotion so that their mood becomes
contagious in us.

Therefore, there are people who have a greater ability to transmit emotions or to be
infected by others. Hypersensitive people who are like emotional sponges capable
of absorbing any emotion that occurs around them. The reason is when one
expresses oneself, one must transmit the best emotions and feelings.

B. External factors

They are the economic, environmental, and infrastructure factors that affect
learning in a new language, in such a way that the person must be in effect in an
external environment that in turn creates an adequate environment to obtain the
greatest possible concentration and acquire all the expected knowledge, with this
we achieve greater development.

b.1 Teacher Preparation

Pronunciation is a very complex component of language learning. It is

imperative for a second language teacher to be at home in the phonetics and
phonology of that particular second language. In terms of English language, it is
essential for an English language teacher to have appropriate knowledge and
information about its phonetics and phonology, so he may correct the
pronunciation of language learners (Khan, 2020). It is recommended to teachers
that they should set their priorities according to the goals of the learners. The last
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

but not the least important task is providing feedback and assessing learners’
performance and progress in further acquisition of pronunciation.

In addition, teacher preparation comprises essential elements for the development

of skills, competencies, knowledge, abilities and values for the performance of their
function based on the needs of an active society. In other words, teacher
leadership is one of the factors that is significantly related to educational quality.

Nevertheless, the pedagogical and didactic principles that characterize the

teacher's preparation for integration in the teaching-learning process in the English
class, using systematization as a method and the preparation of the teacher will
not only be more competent and will have greater professional development, but
will also help improve the teaching-learning process for the student. Continually, it
provides them with the pedagogical and didactic principles that characterize the
teacher's preparation for integration into the teaching process in such a way that it
is adapted to the changes that today's society is experiencing.

b.2 Saturated rooms

The classrooms have to be comfortable to learn, so the students can concentrate

in learning, if the classrooms were not comfortable make the learning process was
not effective (Atmowardoyo & Salija 2018). In fact, the number of students that
should exist in a group has been a concern for teachers for a long time. In which
an issue that divides the teaching community, in which there is a low quality in the
educational experience when it comes to large groups.

Among the reasons why the student cannot concentrate enough to be able to listen
and learn, that is why teachers demand the reduction of groups is because they
normally reduce the effective learning time. Thereupon, it is recommended that the
classrooms should have a minimum number of students, in order to work in
groups, create spaces where they can work freely with the necessary space that
does not exceed thirty so that the student can listen in such a way that the
objective is achieved.

Moreover, saturated classrooms make the teacher have to make much more of an
effort, which causes enormous physical and mental wear and tear, attend to so
many students, listen to them, correct their homework, maintain the necessary
space and an atmosphere where they feel comfortable.

On the other hand, it is very difficult for a student to listen in a noisy classroom, to
be able to intervene, to intensify their tasks, to feel part of a group, but at the same
time recognized individually. For this reason, it is suggested to have the necessary
number of students in the classroom so that they can achieve learning by the
teacher.
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

b.3 Environment noise

Environmental barriers to communication are any part of the environment or

surroundings that can prevent communication or getting in touch with another
person or something else. There is a huge number of environmental barrier
communications (Harina 2019). In particular, time, place, space, climate and noise
are the generally accepted barriers to communication. These factors are powerful
enough to block or alter the communication of a message completely.

Human learning depends strongly on verbal learning. Research has shown that the
quality of the acoustical environment is a significant element that influences verbal
learning. Noise and room acoustical peculiarities are the main descriptors of
acoustical comfort pertaining to learning spaces. The adverse effects of
inappropriate acoustical environments on the learning-teaching activities in
educational buildings have been summarized by an abundance of research and
other published data. Recommendations for both interior noise and external noise

Environmental noise is a problem where large cities and schools are located.
These are generated by actions carried out by the human being. In which he
carries out different industrial or commercial actions, frequent vehicular traffic and
music at a high volume. When noises occur simultaneously and for extended
periods, they can cause damage to people's health and affect the lack of
concentration in classrooms.
During their classes, students are exposed to different types of noise, including
internal external noise, environmental noise and noise generated within the
classroom. According to studies that have been carried out, it shows that noise has
negative effects on the performance of students in the classroom, which include
reduced memory, the ability to express themselves, and performance.

b.2 Phonetic alphabet

The International Phonetic Alphabet or IPA is an alphabetic system of

phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin alphabet. It is the most
widely used phonetic alphabet and the one that is employed in most
dictionaries (Studocu, 2016). That is to say that phonetic symbols represent
phonemes. So, with the help of the symbols provided by the IPA,
transcriptions of sounds, words and expressions can be made.

On the other hand, knowing the theory and the manner of articulation in
each session, the student performs with the next dynamics of activities
provided by the application. Moreover, among these can mention that by
listening to each word where the implementation of the phoneme and sound
is reproduced in an audio and then the user pressing the record icon will say
the word heard and thus develop speaking pronunciation.

b.3 Examples

TFlat English Pronunciation app has word examples with their respective
pronunciation, transcription and Spanish translation of each of them. So,
through the user has the opportunity to listen and pronounce.

C. Activities offered by the TFlat English pronunciation app

c.1 Reading
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

Reading is the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting

meaning from them. We can simply go straight to the reading without a plan
(Manuel 2022). Continually, there are different approaches to teach reading
but most of these agree on the importance of using a series of activities that
anticipate the reading, activities to complete during the actual and some
activities to complete after it.

In spite of reading, activities in this section has content to practice such as

play of words using those different sound phonemes for each word. It
consists of samples in reading the word with alphabet of IPA and write in the
square the word exactly with its correspondent spelling. Additionally, it is
instantly evaluated with the opportunity to repeat your typing or continue
with the next word.

c.2 Writing

Writing is a complex activity that requires transcription and self-regulation.

We used multiple-group structural equation modeling to test the contribution
of transcription (handwriting and spelling), planning, revision, and self-
efficacy (Limpo & Alves 2013). This includes aspects such as handwriting,
spelling, punctuation and the general layout. In transcription, the writer can
work from a final draft to a finished piece of writing.

Furthermore, the activities of the writing section are based on typing with the
keyboard of the IPA alphabet transcriptions. After these are evaluated
instantly and in case of making a mistake you can write again or you also
have the option to continue with the next word.

c.3 Listening

In this listening section of the application, it offers a series of words where

the student has the opportunity to listen to the sound intonation of each
word with its respective pronunciation at the same time imitate it through a
Proposing the Implementation of the TFlat English Pronunciation 2022

speaker, in turn it can be evaluated from the rating from one to five stars.
In addition, these activities as complement additional in the phonetic
subject that you can use in our phonetics classroom are made here to
improve your students’ listening comprehension as well as to be familiar
