Introduction
This module entitled An Overview of Art is about the meaning, scope and importance of humanities, the
meaning purposes, functions, and art styles together with the factors that influenced these styles.

A. Pre-activity
Orientation
Answer the following questions below:
1. For you, what is art?
 In my opinion, art is a creative endeavor that displays technical or imaginative
expertise. It creates a finished good, an item. The term "art" refers to a variety
of human activities that involve the creation of performing, visual, and literary
works. A piece of art is what the artist creates and offers to the world.

2. Do you consider yourself as an artwork? Why? Why not?

 Yes, everyone have the potential and talent to be one. Everyone has the
capacity to be creative in their own special and distinctive way. Even I have
that particular and unique way. I make things based on how my body reacts to
them and how my mind perceives them. I consider myself an artist due to this.
because I think that is what "art" is. Everything is based on your approach to
thinking and how you employ your thoughts.

3. How important for an artist to have a purpose first before he will create an artwork?
 Simply being yourself is the best form of art you can create to express oneself
in any way you see fit. Nothing needs to be meaningful. That's the beauty of
it; the beauty of you. Some of your most beautiful art is spontaneous; it's so
very real; it comes from you; how you feel; how you think; and how you
portray it in colors; they're shades of gray.

I. Objectives
At the end of the end of this module, students should be able to:
a. Define Arts and explain its importance in the society;
b. Express their personal experiences through visual forms; and
c. Appreciate artworks in relation to its functions and factors affecting the style.
II. Lecture
INTRODUCTION TO ARTS
HUMANITIES - As a discipline, is a broad field; it may include not only the fine arts such as painting, sculpture, and
architecture, but also the performing arts such as music, dance, drama and opera, and the literary arts such as prose and
poetry.
It was derived from the Latin word “humanus,” meaning human, cultured, or refined; it embraces the social sciences and the
philosophy.
ART - It is human ingenuity in adapting natural things to man’s use according to Webster.
It came from the word “ars” which means skill; it is synonymous with skill, cunning, artifice and craft, which all mean the
faculty of what is devised.
Hairstylists, couturiers(cloth designers), chefs, wine connoisseurs(wine tasters), perfume experts, jewelers, body
painters(tattooists), milliners(hat makers),potters, musicians, dancers, actors, litterateurs, painters, sculptors, and architects
share one thing in common.
ARTISTS – producing artworks for them is a lucrative job. They have other purposes in engaging art activities. Others do it to
produce things of beauty, like architectural wonders and masterpieces. Some do it to express their emotions and thoughts,
real or imaginary.
FUNCTIONS OF ART
1. PERSONAL OR INDIVIDUAL FUNCTION
Artists have their personal reasons for indulging in art. For instance Gary Valenciano, renders concerts for free because he
loves singing;
2. SOCIAL FUNCTION
A man is a social being and as such he associates with these fellow beings. This association is evidenced by the choral
singing and group dancing in religious rites and other practices.
3. ECONOMIC FUNCTION
Many people believe that it does not pay to be an artist. However, this belief in negated by these facts. Joanne K. Rowling,
the author of the best – selling Harry Potter series, became one of the most highly – paid women in British history. Paintings
of great painters such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo are worth million dollars now.
4. POLITICAL FUNCTION
When Imelda Marcos, a patroness of the arts, became the governor of Metro Manila, she promoted her political programs by
means of the arts. Part of her beautification program was the painting of murals along national roads and busy streets
frequented by motorists
5. HISTORICAL FUNCTION
Paintings, sculptures, architectural works and other art forms serve to record historical figures and events. Paintings of French
kings, sculpture of Philippine heroes, tombs of rulers (Pyramids of Egypt and Taj Mahal of India, and the Our Lady of EDSA
Shrine.
6. CULTURAL FUNCTION
Buildings, furniture (chairs, tables, etc.), clothes, and the like form part of the country’s material culture, while music, dance
and language, which is incorporated in oral and written literature and drama, form part of its non-material culture.
7. RELIGIOUS FUNCTION
Almost all, if not all, art forms evolved from religion. People in the olden times worshipped their gods in the form of songs and
dances.
8. PHYSICAL FUNCTION
Houses and other buildings are constructed to protect their occupants and all the others inside them. At times, paintings serve
to protect the walls and ceilings of some building, while sculptures serve as columns of some buildings as in Greek and
Roman architecture. Many people claim that dance is one of the best forms of exercise, while music is a form of therapy.
9. AESTHETIC FUNCTION
Artworks serve to beautify. Paintings serve to decorate houses and other buildings. Sculptures serve to decorate churches
and similar edifices. Tall buildings are sights to behold. Set designs, as well as costumes and props, make dramas, dance
performances, and song renditions not only realistic but also appealing to the music.
ART STYLE AND FACTORS AFFECTING STYLE
1. GEOGRAPHICAL FACTOR
The place where the artist stays influences his works. Marble sculptures are plenty in Romblon because marble abounds in
that province in the same way as wooden sculptures abound in Paete, Laguna where woodcarving is the primary occupation
of the male population.
2. HISTORICAL FACTOR
Historical events exert a great influence on artists, particularly the writers. Jose Rizal’s novels, Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo, graphically highlight the events that took place in the country during the last century of Hispanic rule.
3. SOCIAL FACTOR
Social relationships affect artists, too. The English writer Ben Jonson composed his “Song to Celia”; similarly the Italian
sonneteer Francesco Petrarch wrote poems for his lady love named Laura. Society at most times dictate the types of
paintings, sculptures, songs, dances, literary pieces and movies to be produced.
4. IDEATIONAL FACTOR
The ideas coming from various people also influence artists. The Father of Psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, proposed ideas
that have influenced surrealist painters. The ideas that the human body is the most beautiful figure to present as an art
subject gave rise to the school of thought called nudism. Painters opted to produce paintings of nude males and females. In
sculpture, nudism became a fad of with the creation of nude figures of male gods known as Apollo statues.
5. PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTOR
At times, the works produced by the artists are affected by their make - up or frame of mind. For instance, the first painting of
Edward Munch, “The Sick of Child,” is an effect of his unfortunate childhood experience of contracting a long illness after
losing his loved at an early age. Vincent van Gogh’s painting entitles “Starry Night” was believed to be completed during his
stay in asylum in St. Remy, during the most tormented period in his life.
6. TECHNICAL FACTOR
Techniques matter as far as artistic styles are concerned. In fact, painters employ a variety of techniques to make their works
unique.

III. Application/Activity
Reminders:
 Before you proceed to the given activity, kindly read first the following guide questions below.
 As you draw, create an artwork or capture a picture, take some documentation while doing this given activity
as a proof that you personally made it.
 Deduction of score will be done once you failed to pass these activities on its deadline and such no
attachments of documentations. You may send your documentations through Messenger.

As an individual who has gone through a specific set of experiences, what kind of art would you make? What do you
want to share to others? Or would you like your audience to just take pleasure in the aesthetics of what you have
created? Remember, there is neither right nor wrong answer for artistic interpretation (can be made or captured e.g.
photo). The goal is to express something of relevance to you as a person (even to your artistic taste) in a visual form.
You do not have to present this to the class; it can be just a personal record.
IV. Assessment

Answer the questions below.

1. Why art is very important in life and society?

According to my personal opinion, art enables you to comprehend your environment and process your feelings. It
makes you feel alive and enables you to view life from a new angle. Since the dawn of civilization, art has always
played a significant role in human society. Art has been employed as a means of expression, instruction, and cultural
exchange.

2. Were the functions presented effective? In what other ways they can relate to art?
According to me, the three kinds of art's purposes are its physical, social, and personal purposes. In any particular
work of art, these categories can and frequently do overlap.

3. Cite an artwork that you know and reflect the factors that affects the art style/s being presented in this artwork.
Sculpture is a creative medium in which three-dimensional art objects are created out of hard or plastic materials.
The designs could take the form of free-standing objects, reliefs on surfaces, or situations like tableaux or ones that
enclose the viewer. Clay, wax, stone, metal, glass, wood, plaster, rubber, and a wide range of other materials can all
be utilized as media. It is possible to carve, model, mold, cast, wrought, weld, stitch, assemble, or combine materials
in other ways. It emanates from, is affixed to, or is fundamentally a part of anything else that either acts as a
background or a launching pad for it.
